never been to it - love Atlanta. I would like to get a "feel" of the overall event from anyone who has gone. I think I read that it's all in one convention center or hotel. Are the workshops in carpeted rooms with no mirrors? (ugh!)
how many vendors would you say?
Are performances only in the evenings or all day long?
thanks

Re: REQUEST: TribalCon
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 11:02 AMHi!
I attended TribalCon for the first time last year and can't express enough how much I looooved it!!! It is indeed held in one hotel. The large ballroom or convention room is where the workshops take place which is indeed carpeted and with no mirrors( i understand the bummer in that but I promise the instruction makes up for it) the workshops are relatively small in comparison to other large conventions i believe the largest workshop last year was about 70 so you really get time to ask questions and interact with the instructors. The vending is in two rooms and tends to spill out into the hall. I believe the were probably 20+ vendors last year and I have heard there will be more this year. I thought that the range of merchandise for tribal costuming was great!! Something you don't get alot of at many workshops this side of the country. Their is one big performance Saturday night with the instructors and invited performers. Definetly a well oiled machine that is!! Smooth and not too long with LOTS of variety!!!
I have to say you can't beat TribalCon. So personal, well organized and efficant! This year they have even added on an extra day, allowed early registration for early arrivals and organized an extra welcoming party for those of us getting there Thursday. I really can't say enough wonderful things about this event! I am bringing my whole troupe with me this year! Hope you can make it!

Thu, February 7, 2008 - 5:23 AMTribalcon rocks!
"I think I read that it's all in one convention center or hotel."
Yes. It all takes place in one building, which is really nice. Most of the food is a short couple of blocks away in a really cute downtown area. And Marta (the Atlanta transit) takes folks straight from the airport to the hotel area.
"Are the workshops in carpeted rooms with no mirrors? (ugh!) "
Yes. The dance space is carpeted and there are no mirrors, but the instructors teach on a stage, so you can easily see what they are doing. If you plan for the carpeting and wear some kind of slick shoe - it's not too bad. :)
"how many vendors would you say?"
LOTS! There were quiet a few last year and even more this year! I think a list of vendors was posted to the Awalim Tribe recently, so you could check there for specific vendors.
"Are performances only in the evenings or all day long?"
There is one really wonderful show on Saturday evening. A local club provides an aftershow party. There is an open floor hafla on Friday night and usually some of the music instructors play during this time - which truly rocks! And this year I hear there will be a small get together on Thursday evening at a local pub for those who are arriving early.
This is a really nice, well run, intimate weekend! The Sunday "Instructor Luncheon" really rocks! If you want to ask questions of your favorite teachers - this is the time to do it! Everyone sits around on the floor, eats lunch and chats. It is one of my favorites of the weekend.
I hope you get the chance to come! I'm local and encourage all of my students to attend. Ziah recently updated the class information on the website, so if you haven't been recently go check it out! www.tribalcon.com
