Hi everyone, I am currently working in the city of San Francisco. I have been doing many "clean-up" jobs lately, and I love the "forensic" nature and Andrew speaks of. However, I don't seem to like the maintenance. Do you have any ideas on creating a network of bookkeepers looking for work? I thought Tribe would be a good place, but I don't see too much action on this particular tribe. Thank you, Natalie

Re: Where are all the bookkeepers?
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 8:16 PMHey Natalie - nice to meet you. I'm down in the San Jose area, live in the SC mountains and about the farthest I'll drive is up to Menlo Park area. I usually keep about as busy as I want to be but lately I've been mulling over the idea of taking on another client or two. The maintenance part is what I like - get in, get it done and move on!
I've never really crossed paths with others like me (bookkeepers must like to stay off the radar! hee hee) and am interested in what others are doing because occasionally I like to refer my clients out to others (like when I get too busy and need to pare down)
Glad to have you hear on this tribe! -

Fri, November 2, 2007 - 11:07 PMI haven't been to one of these meetings yet, but they happen monthly in SF.
The Bay Area Quickbooks Meetup Group at meetup.com
This might be a good info source for all of us.

Re: Where are all the bookkeepers?
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 7:07 PMHi Natalie,
Another good resource is the Marin Bookkeepers Network which I belonged to years ago:
www.marinbookkeepers.org/index.asp
Perhaps the meetup group in the city is a good one too, but I would recommend the Marin group, just to take in their meetings even if you're not practicing in that area. It's a great way to learn what other bookkeepers are doing and keep your skills polished -- they have some great speakers and round tables on relevant topics. Many Marin bookkeepers do work in the city (I did back when - during the dot.com boom - those were the days!)
Doesn't appear that too many bookkeepers are the tribe type, eh? =) Guess I'm a bit of a chameleon myself...

Thu, November 29, 2007 - 3:28 AMwow azur-yana! i didn't realize that anyone could get so organized as to run a group - that's awesome. i always thought it had never developed in toronto (where i am) because it was a little like herding cats. this gives me hope, though. -

Re: Where are all the bookkeepers?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 6:12 AMHi Will,
Well the group is sponsored by a small CPA firm. This firm reasoned that it was a good marketing strategy to make connections with local bookkeepers. Their staff arranges the meetings and the speakers. And there was a small fee to be part of the group (I think it's about $50 annually now), and if you wanted to have a nice meal at the meeting (which was usually at a nice restaurant), you had to pay the extra $10 - $12 bucks. But the cost of the meal was generally well worth it and made it more fun and probably motivated more of us to take time out to go (I know that was true in my case!).
So maybe other people can approach a CPA who might be in this type of situation - without their own in-house bookkeeping. It must have some value for this firm in Marin, since they are still doing it after all these years!
Good luck!

Re: Where are all the bookkeepers?
Sun, December 2, 2007 - 6:47 AMHi Gary,
You will find that nearly all (if not %100) of the bookkeepers in the Marin group use QuickBooks to some degree, and for the majority it is their specialty. So plenty of networking there if you use QuickBooks. When I was a member, one memorable meeting featured Doug Sleeter from the Sleeter Group as the speaker (check out www.sleeter.com if you're not familiar with his QuickBooks Consultanting Materials). Many in the group attend the Sleeter conference held usually in Las Vegas in October -- so indeed there are some knowledgable bookkeepers in the group.
Hope that helps!
