VIDEO REVIEW

I am thinking of getting some more videos from this dynamic pair. I have Beata's older drum solo and shimmy techniques and LOVE them. Does anyone have any comments to share on the Baladi or Shamadan video (both by Horatio)?

Making Conversation

I want to get some conversation going about Beata and Horacio.

It seems that whenever I show their performances to someone who had not seen them before, their comments are about Beata's beauty, her incredible, perfect isolations, Horacio's jaw-dropping belly flutters, etc. And then the inevitable question: why does he wear a top? I think that his costumes are always gorgeous, with or without a top. But some people seem to find them odd. What do you think? Just an interesting part of his costuming, or something you wish he would do away with?

If you have a favorite B&H topic, please post it!

The complete schedule of the 2-year teacher training can now be seen at http://www.oriental-fantasy.com/english/catt.html.

We hope to inspire and encourage you with the enormous variety of subjects and an A-list of great international guest teachers. This list is not final – 2 years are a long time – but we already are in contact with quite a few (Magdy El Leisy, Aida Nur, Khaled Mahmoud, Hossein Fayazpour, Cihangir Gümüstürkmen, Sudarsana Kumar, Guido El Tallo, a star dancer from N. Y. – and with any luck even a legend from Cairo and a mega tribal star...).

I bet you'll love it, Shaia. It is from a film I never heard of, first there is an interview and two scenes with Tomasz, then after the fourth minute there is Horacio (doing drum solo like a madman):

NEW YEAR'S GREETING FROM BEATA!

Hi tribe members,

This is very exciting. I sent a quick Happy New Year note to Beata, Horacio, and Mimi, and received an almost immediate response from Beata. This is the first time that we have corresponded. She is so warm and friendly, and funny! I attach it for your reading pleasure.
- Shaia

Dear Shaia,

Mimi, Pepe and I are in the office which is finally free of suitcases - at least until the end of the month!

I finally had a moment to look in the net what is happening and I am very touched by your loving words and all the effort you put into the tribe!!!!!! I want to thank you and send you a BIG virtual HUG!!!!

Mimi ofcourse is flattered that she is famous. She has 2 new sweaters , one green and one red, that I crocheted for her during the christmas bereak. She feels beautifull. Actually I made them to cover that she had a bad case of hair loss due to a medication the vet gace her. Now she turned a medical mishap into a fashion statement!

Best wishes from Berlin and happy shimmies all of 2007!

Ballet, "cross-training" and bellydance

Hey ya'll! Now that we have enough people for a more lively discussion, I'd like to hear your thoughts on "cross-training" in Bellydance.

Beata and Horatio (is it Horatio or Horacio??) have extensive ballet training. As a former ballet dancer myself, I find that it both has helped and hindered me in my Bellydance training. My spins, turns etc. are good - but it took me a loooong time to achieve that "grounded" gooshy feeling. Ballet and Bellydance seem opposite yet similar - what are your thoughts/experiences? Any other examples of "cross-trained" Bellydancers?

My visit to Cifuentes Dancing Studio on 29/11/2006

After my stay in Berlin was practically over, I was lucky I could stop working earlier in the evening, so I rushed from the fair with my suitcase and the still heavier notebook to catch a taxi to be in time for Horacio's intermediate class. But Berlin is bad for taxis, they never seem to know where they're needed. I spend my last money in cash because card-paying was by no means a normal thing in Berlin-taxi neither. But I safely got to the district of Schöneberg/Tiergarten where Beata and Horacio have their studio in the backyard of a typical Berlin-house in a cobble-stone-street, enjoying the ride through the only city of a convincing urbanity in Germany, our old/new capital.

Entering the backyard, I tried to make a picture of the sign of the studio with one hand misclicking all the buttons, and I arrived upstairs on the first floor sweaty, feeling real messy. I dragged myself in with my luggage with all the students for Horacio's intermediate class which was about to begin dressed ready and staring at me in my penguin-suit. A little black dog run around the place (I thought wasn't Mimi white?), I went to check formalities with the secretary Frau Laue and told Beata who came round the corner that I planned to move in with them (thus explaining my luggage). Beata with her long blond hair down to the waist laughed good-moodedly and told me I only would have to try not to get my suitcase mixed up with one of theirs. In the room on the right to the entrance they had their office behind glass panes and about six suitcases open with costumes in it. They were to leave to Helsinki the next morning. Beside a writing desk, her ladyship the graceful little Mimi was resting (white as expected) on moroccan cushions and Beata was busy packing her stuff. I told her about you, Shaia and she said she remembered, you were the very nice lady who opened a fan club. I asked for a photo she said ok, but as always, the battery decided it would not work anymore. Since I know this digital-camera shit I wasn't even too surprised...Don't cry now, Shaia, next time I'll get beautiful pictures for you and tribe!

So I went to change myself only beginning to feel human when getting out of this work-uniform I was wearing. The studio isn't spacy apart from the dance-room, but it is cosy. In the classroom they have opened the ceiling to the roof, building an open steel-construction under it. The room is ample and has enough daylight well when it's not dark. Horacio dropped the last technical "update" during class, the remote control for the Hifi-system, thus smashing what he said it was his present for last Christmas. Horacio is a giant if you look at the average latin american man, he must be about 1,90 m. He is very well built and has a always smiling, humourous way. He speaks German with an accent between latin-american and English. During the intermediate class he had us doing little sequences of steps and moves, putting them together in the end and they came out to be a nice little drum solo. The first part the class had already done but I could follow well and caught up with them without trouble. It was always very clear what Horacio indicated, and absolutely no ego-show involved, but as he wanted to finish the piece he didn't go deep into single parts of it. I'd say maybe half of the students there are a little in love with him but he wouldn't play the master and his girlies-thing like a ballet-teacher I had once used to do.

After class was over he said he would talk to me but then rushed into Beata's class, agreeing to teach the first half of it since Beata was still busy with the luggage. So I sat on the threshold of the office chatting with her a little. She has a great body for a bellydancer, slender and female. Beautiful pictures of both her and Horacio were hanging on the walls. Beata is a Berlin-girl, she talks in the Berlin-accent that became so famous by Marlene Dietrich: a lot of street-charme resides in it (Berlin is very direct, sometimes even a little rudish, but at the same time sincere and very warm-hearted. Marlene interpreted this with a boyish attitude and great female sex appeal - best to watch the "Blaue Engel").

I asked Beata if Mimi could change colours and she said, no, the black one is Pepe. And there he was sleeping after having been chased out of the dance-room. So, Shaia, there is Mimi who is white and Pepe, a little bigger and black. The day before Beata and Horacio had arrived from Rome. Beata was annoyed because they had been searched by security and their luggage had been a mess. I told her about tribe and youtube (yeah pity I have yet seen a lot more of Jillina's dancing thanks to youtube and DVDs than I have of Beata's, whose DVDs are much more expensive). She said she had little time for the internet, that the day before she had been sitting for six hours responding to e-mails and she said this was enough for her. I asked if she knew Maria Shashkova. She didn't but confirmed that the general dancing level in Moscow and St. Petersburg was very high and she enjoyed very much teaching workshops there. I also wanted to know why apart from two big international workshops during the year they wouldn't do more week-end things in Berlin, she jokingly said oh my Berlin-students are too lazy, they have enough with the regular classes or do it just for fun.
Then she left to finish her class and Horacio sat with Frau Laue to organize the costumes for their Christmas-party - he was putting on stage "Little Red Ridinghood" with his children's ballet-class. I got my stuff together to catch the nine o'clock-train. Frau Laue called a cab for me, I had to be sure I could pay with a card this time and my oh my it took them some time to find one (yeah this is the capital!). I watched Beata through the door, oh I'd love to have her as my teacher! I mused about the DVDs being on sale for €20 but apart from having lost my bellydance-footgear last week + my beautiful leather gloves these days in Berlin I also had had to pay € 17 for joining Horacio's class for this one time and decided for the moment not to invest more money. I said goodbye and Horacio looked over the rim of his glasses when saying goodbye and added generously: you danced very nice. On my way to the street I chewed and mused and thought and reflected that if he meant to say it not only to be nice, just maybe meant it a little, I would indeed be very proud...
I told the taxi driver that this was the studio of the best belly-dance teachers in our country, where all my teachers have gone to learn or to get a polish so that he'd remember...
Memorable day. I'll be back soon, even if there'll be no workshop. At least for some pictures...;-)

WE HAVE GOTTEN A MESSAGE FROM BEATA AND HORACIO (AND MIMI)!!!

Well, I guess nothing ventured, nothing gained, because we have gotten a long and thoughtful response from the Cifuentes, which I will copy below. How spectacular!! - Shaia

Dear Shaia,

Hi people!!!!!

Greetings from Berlin. Again, thank you sooo very much.
I guess we are so busy that we actually forget that we may have an effect on people through our work.
We just got back from North Carolina and Texas and we are still dizzy from the jet lag. Last night we could not fall asleep until six am and during the day we are drousy from the time change, but that should go away after a couple of days.
We feel we can breath out now after the premiere of Talisman, which just happenend a couple of weeks ago in Greensboro, Norh Carolina. The days before the opening were absolute and total madness, a race against the clock trying to get everything ready in time, and still so, on saturday Nov 4, the curtain opened at 8 pm and at 7.30 Beata's oriental solo costume was still not finished. I was sewing it on her frantically and prayed that the skirt would stay on (it had a tendancy to slide down because I actually put too many stones on it).
Well, the skirt stayed on her, and I was happy to see her looking beautifully dressed in a warm red two piece which I had been working on for the last several weeks.
Our panic was: Do we make the fast costume changes in time? Or does the music start before we are ready. I mean, music does not wait!
Well we did make everything and things went well, people even laughed at my jokes, which is one of the scariest things to do. One never knows if people will laugh until the show is actually runing. No guarantee.
Beata has the biggest challange with costume changes because she also changes earings, shoes, accesoires, sometimes hair is down, sometimes up. For me it is easier.
Anyway, we must tell you that we are amazed and extremely flattered and touched that this group exists. Honestly.
It would be fun to make contact every now and then and we can sort of make a report on how things are going and what the latest plans are. We can also tell you about anything weird, unusual or funny that has happened.
On that note, i will tell you that on the opening night of Talisman I was afraid to open my tanoura skirt, since it had not gone so well in rehearsal to bring it up from my waist to over the head. So after I made patterns with the drums, and feeling quite dizzy from the turning I decided to keep the skirt on and just finished after about six minutes of turns. But life pushed me into it like it or not. In Texas I didn't tie the skirt tight enoug and as I twirled it started to become undone (paaaanic!!!) so I had to undo it after all, and I took it over my head. That part still needs work.
OK, talk to you all soon, our warmest regards,

Beata & Horacio & Mimi

I Love Beata and Horacio Cifuentes

I started this tribe because I couldn't find a tribe solely dedicated to Beata and Horacio Cifuentes, who have been the most influential dancers in my life. I have never found anyone who dances with such perfection and passion, and their Oriental Fantasy productions are like nothing else! I am going to their workshops and performance in Austin, Texas in November, and am very excited. I would like to hear from others who are planning to go, and dancers who have studied with them in the past. I have corresponded with them, and find them to be quite warm and approachable. I hope that they realize what they have given to the world of Middle Eastern dance.
