Great to get this invite, LIz, as I was just browsing around some of the other Tribes that specialize in costume creations, and trying to rally over to a second-hand store in search of fuzzy and/or metallic flair. Actually, what I really want is a stylin' wig from someone else's closet! But I can't decide on the colour... : ) xorachy

Re: Costume ideas?
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 6:27 PMIm making some yarn hair falls special for the occaison. You get an elastic lycra hair tye, yarn (anything thats thick like a dreadlock) and ribbons and what not, and lay out strands double the length you want the tail. Make them uneven for that tapered look. When you get desired thickness, pull thru the hair tye. Sinch tie it off and walla! Put your hair in a bun, and rope the elastic around your bun and make it sit on top of your head. I am right now making "Purple Space" ones, with white, pink, purple and silver ribbons. I have a purple dress and silver leggies. I made the leggies out of a really ugly silver metallic granny sweater I got at the thrift store. I just cut off the arms and put them around my leg....instant space legs! I can add trim to the bottom or whatever. FUN!
And Im currently working on Spaceman on a stick, but my GOSH DARND COOLNEON L WIRE DRIVERS ARE all being a PAIN IN THE ASS.....coolenon LWire is realy cool stuff, but it breaks so easily and is pricey. I just wrote them a letter of complaint, I actually might need to get a new driver so my spaceman on a stick can glow all purple. NOTE: Spaceman on a stick is tiny, the stick is tiny, like the venue, so he wont be intrusive at all. :) -

Im playing with this thick se thru silver ribbon, thinking of twisting it and then gluing the twist together...hard to describe in typing but hoping they will turn into hollowy wierd snake dreads. -

Re: Costume ideas?
Sat, December 15, 2007 - 12:55 PMSomeone needs to wear a sports shirt with the number 42 on it.
When they are on a quest to find the secret of the universe in Hitchikers, they finally get to the mighty computer called "Deep Thought" and it gives them the answer to life, the universe, and everything. The answer, after many long endearing moments, that is given, is 42.
Needless to say, it pisses everyone off. What the fuck does 42 mean????
Some english humor.....theres nothing to get.....its just silly shit!! YAY Douglas Adams! -
-
Re: Costume ideas?
Sat, December 15, 2007 - 10:35 PMThe Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything has a numeric solution in Douglas Adams' series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In the story, a "simple answer" to The Ultimate Question is requested from the computer Deep Thought - specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer which turns out to be 42. When asked to provide The Ultimate Question, the computer says that it can't, but can help design an even more powerful computer (the Earth) which can. The programmers then embark on a further, ultimately futile, ten million year program to discover The Ultimate Question, hindered by Golgafrinchans after 8 million years, and in the last five minutes by the Vogons.
The author was presented with many readers' theories about The Ultimate Question and The Ultimate Answer in his lifetime, all of which he rebutted with his own somewhat apocryphal explanations -

Mon, December 17, 2007 - 2:47 PMMy awesome grandma just gave me a couple yards of silver sequened fabric... I'm so Stoked! I think I'll make a sparkley space dress or a shiney spacey mini-skirt! Anyone know any tips on sewing with sequins?? -

Re: Costume ideas?
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 8:43 AMGeezr its totally rad that youre finding the Hitchikers tidbits, I knew the explanation had to be 10 times more involved than what I remember.....
I always summed it all up as "whatever land" , the imagination that goes on whatever.... :)
Freshy will bee way too big and distracting in the 12 Gs unfortunately, hmmmm I got a good idea, buy a bag of swedish fish and pass them out. I will try and remember!
But I do have Spaceman on a stick, and Mark fixed his wire!!! Lee, Mark just learned how to solder it all, and hes been a fixin' machine. I'll clean the drivers and see if that helps the ones he couldnt fix. Its also the press button kind: THEY SUCK!! Ya gotta stick to the switch kind, I think the push button wears out. -
-
Re: Costume ideas?
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 9:27 AMyes once you get the soldering down it opens a whole new world. How does Mark like dealing with those tiny ass outer conductor wires, man they can bee a bitch to strip without tearing them off.
I cleaned my push button by pushing it and out like a kid on crack. Course you could always attempt soldering on a new switch. But at that point its easer to drop the $7 on a new one.
Wait till you see our modified wood bee lantern!!!!!!! -

Costumery
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 9:47 PMQuote from my husband this morning in the car on the way to the airport (regarding purchase of glitter boots vs. fuschia pink craziness), in a rather sweet but annoyed whine: "What did String Cheese do to our New Year's? Grateful Dead NYE we used to just put on a teeshirt and jeans. Now ya gotta have bling and flair and GO GO boots!"
So who knows if I'll get my boots, but There WILL be balloons!
Liz: found this suggestion from The Costume Diva about sewing fabs: www.shira.net/cg/glitterdot.htm It seems to me that the glittery-panted ones on Cheese tour always found the pants a bit... sweaty. But isn't it super-fun having such souped-up fabric! Yeah Grandma!! -

Wed, December 19, 2007 - 11:55 AMI bought a pattern for a sequined mini-skirt!! And Jo-anne's Fabric store is having a great sale right now on holiday fabric. I got some yards of bejeweled see-through teal fabric for 50% off! I wanna go back for the 50% off fleese! I'm thinking PJ pants! -

Re: Costumery
Wed, December 19, 2007 - 12:41 PMNow that I'm in Philly, I can feel South Street's decadent diva dives gathering me into their vortex. No doubt I'll show up with discounted crystal-knobbed curtain pulls wrapped into my not-as-slick-as-Samsa headdress!!
Fleece -- for PJs PJs? Or pj-styled dance pants? I wonder if you could do the same fringed / knot-tied / no-sew edging on pants as our friends' John & Deb do on the baby blankets they make. -
-
Re: Costumery
Wed, December 19, 2007 - 12:44 PMI was thinking about that!!! Fringe on my dance/PJ pants! -
