Riding Scooter For Peace

A little over a month ago, Alix Bryan decided to make one of those "split-second life changing decisions." She half-jokingly said, "I want to put a peace sign on the map," paused, reflected and determined that is exactly what she wanted to do.
The next month was a whirlwind of plotting and planning-resulting in P.E.A.C.E, SCOOTER-A Patriots Exhibition Advancing Community and Environmentalism, on a Scooter.
She will literally put Peace on the map this summer, starting from the White House and ending at the "Western White House," in Crawford, Texas.
The trip route is roughly 9,000+miles and takes over ten weeks( or 2 months) to complete.
A scooter enthusiast, her Buddy125 was a natural choice for travel-they are "environmentally friendlier," and riding one brings her a lot of peace. Also, Alix felt that since everyone is awfully concerned about the environment it would help people see the natural brilliance to riding a scooter. "If I can ride one 9,000 miles-people can ride one 15 miles to work."

The impetus for the trip? Well, aside from a damn good reason for riding Highway One on her scooter- Peace is to be the message, first and foremost.
She attended a John Lennon exhibit in her hometown, Charlottesville, VA and noticed this statement, "If one billion people were thinking about Peace, we would have Peace." She thought, "why wouldn't one billion people be thinking about Peace?" To her, Peace isn't political by nature, although it has craftily been branded that way. To her, the beginning of Peace is the relationship to yourself and your environment-and at a bigger level-the way conflict is solved and policy created. Years of active involvement with the anti-war movement led Alix to realize, "protests are often exclusive-not everyone will attend-people think they are too political-and protesting itself is doesn't always provide a direct link to change at an inner or community level." "I became frustrated by marching, holding up a sign, media comes out, clicks the cameras for the articles-and nothing changes politically." War, even anti-war, is not her focus. Peace is.

"I am trying to do something where the war isn’t the focus, but Peace is. Hopefully, if we start from that perspective, we eventually all get to the same point-that war doesn’t seem to solve conflict or create justice, it just establishes power-power over and not power with-which is what a democracy is supposed to be. The more we focus on war- even “anti-war” the further we are from the heart of what Peace is and what it means to the individual. That is why this summer I am just asking people to define Peace. Let's start there. The individual who takes the time to define something has just empowered themselves and created a way to measure results. Yes, it is an uprising-not a revolution-revolutions just usually go full circle, right? This is going up and further.
I think everyone can offer me their own personal definition of Peace. I can’t think of anyone who would truly say and mean that they don’t want peace for themselves in some manner…and I’m just riding around trying to figure out what those personal definitions are. ”
The route itself is her pro-peace demonstration. "It feels like I am accomplishing more than holding up a sign at a protest-P.E.A.C.E. SCOOTER is the sign," she says.

She might just be pulling into a town near you and would love some company. Advice along the way is appreciated-roads, coffee shops, health food stores-or even a free lunch!
Stay up to date on her website, www.peacescooter.com. There she will be posting on a variety of subjects: life on a scooter for two months, musings, gear, roadways and the Peace interviews.
And she says remember- "Don't point one finger, point TWO!"

we've adopted a lot of great bands as our own, but a lot of "our" bands have been quite dreadful...you know which ones i mean. so, which bands right now - i'm talking kids taking up instruments who are under 30 - are doing something truly stylish, truly forward-looking, truly soulful, truly "Mod"? and in a good way, not an embarrassing way? include links to mp3's if possible. thanks...

Have any of you ever seen or heard of the documentary film "Hell Bent for Leisure"?

It was a 1997 documentary about scooter culture in Vancouver BC. I saw it in 1998 but haven't heard of it since.

Hey there everyone, my name is Sean and as the title indicates, I'm a newbie to the mod scene. Mod culture and fashion is something I've always been a huge fan of, and now that I'm in the city I decided that now is as good a time as any to start educating myself about it. So...anybody know any good places to shop around here? Like most college students my age (anyone here attending/attend SF State?), my funds are limited, so dropping a few hundred on a suit probably won't be happening. However, any info would be greatly appreciated. Also, just wondering if there were any "hotspots" or clubs or anything where I could meet people with interests in mod culture. So yeah, anything you gotta say would be great.

So because it's miserably, insufferably hot, I decided to chop my fringe, then I left it alone and cut it in back, not being able (of course) to see the job I'd done. It turns out I've got a pretty decent "Dutch-boy" Mod shag now. So that worked out.

"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The two surviving members of The Who are producing a documentary about the British rock band's turbulent history, an ongoing 40-year saga of death, drugs and timeless music.

Guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey have joined forces on the feature-length project with director Murray Lerner, an Oscar-winning documentary director who first filmed the band during the 1970 Isle of Wight festival.

...

To that end, the filmmakers have set up a Web site, www.thewhomovie.com, seeking material from fans."

"Signs of the Times: Life in the Swingin' Sixties at the LBJ Library and Museum (December 18, 2004 - August 28, 2005) is an exhibition that captures all of the excitement of the 1960s in every area of American popular culture: from the "British Invasion," Motown, and Psychedelic music to the fashions of go-go dancers, mods and hippies - from the cutting edge comedians and sports personalities to the campy TV shows (and commercials) - and from the "hip" books and movies of a generation to the crass consumerism that became the essence of pop art.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

ACEFACE Threat Level: RedWhiteBlue (Fading Ways)
They've got the suits and the skinny ties, but rather than simply being a high-fashion mod revival, Toronto's Aceface have something to say to back up their '60s U.K. attire. Principal songwriter and musical prodigy Carl Nanders uses the band's debut to create a lefty's freak-out jam session, rallying against war, fear and manufactured consent. Chomsky and Fisk get props in the liner notes and Nanders and his organ-boogie rock symphony don’t shy away from some thick and catchy music to complement the intelligent lyrical material. Book-smart rockers can get a bit pretentious at times; luckily, this tambourine-jiggling throwback is a readathon with a very welcome ass-shaking twistathon.. Brian Wong

Are there any mod clubnights in LA?
I don't mean "retro 60's" music events, but more "Mod"... with soul, ska, vespas, and the whole aesthetic?

http://www.modculture.co.uk/competition/weller_competition.php

Hopefully this is of interest -- I think it's kind of cool. Paul Weller's contribution to the "Under the Influence" compilation series came out a couple days ago. Basically, a CD of tunes hand-picked by PW to represent his biggest musical influences. Here is a track list:

Little Richard 'Slippin ’and Slidin ’'
The Headhunters 'God Made Me Funky'
Ritchie Havens 'Handouts In The Rain'
D ’Angelo 'Devil ’s Pie'
Charles Mingus 'Passions Of A Man'
The Casuals 'Jesamine'
The Winstons 'Colour Him Father'
John Holt 'Ali Baba'
Funkdoobiest 'Doobie To My Head'
Marvin Gaye 'Pretty Little Baby'
Blind Boys Of Alabama 'Jesus Gonna Be Here'
The Kinks 'Big Black Smoke'
The Five Starirsteps 'We Must Be In Love'
The Wailers 'Small Axe'
Big Youth 'Hit The Road Jack'
John Coltrane 'Ole''

Hey does anybody know of a deal on a working Vespa or a project bike in the San Francisco area? I'd prefer a mid 60's VBB but I'd also be open to a P200 or 125. From 1987 to 1993 I had about 10 bikes and rode scooters in the santa Cruz Scooter Club and have always regretted selling my last one. Hey are there any real Mods left or is there still a scene of actual Mods... you know suits, parkas and porkpies?

Modculture.com's old mp3 archive has just been trimmed down and the tunes download faster (as ra's). A new selection of music is available regularly, from classics to the more obscure. The archive is only available to forum members – just sign in (or sign up) and you'll see the details, password and discussion.

We have to say something don't we?

Can't all just hang around by the door tryin to be THE FACE can we?

I'm Johnny.

I was big into this when th eJam were at their peak.....mid 80s.

I've had 2 Vespas, a Bajaj 150 and a PX200.

I guess I was a bit more of a scooterist really.....

I like punk, metal , soul, anything really.

If you want an inkling of my mindset re:Mods go look at or even better listen to , Snuff. They're an English band......very Mod/Northern Soul influenced Punk.

I've kind of gone off ska since that godawful revival a few years back........still, the 80s stuff and the 60s stuff is cool.

Someone PLEASE send me a LAMBRETTA.

Wow. Sunday, 11/2: a great show at Slim's in San Francisco -- the ska/soul stylings of the legendary HEPCATS with the equally legendary LOVED ONES as the opening act. Should be a lot of scooters out in front of the club.

Online tickets sales linked below say "sold out," but tickets are still available on the Tickets.com site or by calling. Night of the show might be dicey.
