In one of my studies, I've read a couple of different passages that has stayed with me for the week....
"Just like in the modern army, if a soldier dies in combat, his family is taken care of by the government. Similarly, if one becomes a pure devotee, his family has no worries about anything, because the Lord protects them. To become a devotee is the greatest qualification. He has got everything."
visayira anna khaile malina haya mana
malina mana haile nahe krsnera smarana
"When one eats food offered by a materialistic man, one's mind becomes contaminated, and when the mind is contaminated, one is unable to think of Krsna properly."

Mon, March 13, 2006 - 8:41 AM"So often our dissatisfaction runs pale to those that came before. History does not lessen our concerns and feelings, but has the potential to amplify the elegance of our struggle. Once our stones are tossed, we become part of the intertwining ripples and in that, WE ARE GLAD TO BE HERE; to embrace the wonder and movement of this miraculous mystery called living."

"It is no great matter to make a goddess into a witch or a virgin into a harlot; but to achieve the contrary, to give the humiliated dignity, to make the fallen worth coveting, for that either art or character is needed." [J. W. Goethe, 1749-1832]

Re: Quotes that make you think
Sat, March 18, 2006 - 5:38 AMSaw this on the meditation tribe I belong to....
The Philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurti
Truth is a pathless land
"I maintain that truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. That is my point of view, and I adhere to that absolutely and unconditionally. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or to coerce people along any particular path. If you first understand that, then you will see how impossible it is to organize a belief. A belief is purely an individual matter, and you cannot and must not organize it. If you do, it becomes dead, crystallized; it becomes a creed, a sect, a religion, to be imposed on others "
J.Krishnamurti at the opening day of the annual Star Camp at Ommen, Holland, on the 3rd August 1929, where he dissolved "The Order of the Star in the East" that was founded by his foster mother Annie Besant in 1911 ,then the President of Theosopy Society

Re: Quotes that make you think
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 2:57 PMinterestingly enough these come from nike slogan campaigns....i found them one day online....
"All your life you are told the things you cannot do. All your life they will say you're not good enough or strong enough or talented enough, they'll say you're the wrong height or the wrong weight or the wrong type to play this or be this or achieve this. THEY WILL TELL YOU NO, a thousand times no until all the no's become meaningless. All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly. They will tell you no. And YOU WILL TELL THEM YES"

"A WOMAN IS OFTEN MEASURED by the things she cannot control. She is measured by the way her body curves or doesn't curve, by where she is flat or straight or round. She is measured by 36-24-26 and inches and ages and numbers, by all the outside things that don't ever add up to who she is on the inside. And so if a woman is to be measured, let her be measured by the things she can control, by who she is and who she is trying to become. Because every woman know, measurements are only statistics and STATISTICS LIE."

"Too often we are scared. Scared of what we might not be able to do. Scared of what people might think if we tried. We let our fears stand in the way of our hopes. We say no when we want to say yes. We sit quietly when we want to scream. And we shout with the others, when we should keep our mouths shut. Why? After all,we do only go around once. There's really no time to be afraid. So stop. Try something you've never tried. Risk it. Enter a triathlon. Write a letter to the editor. Demand a raise. Call winners at the toughest court. Throw away your television. Bicycle across the United States. Try bobsledding. Try anything. Speak out against the designated hitter. Travel to a country where you don't speak the language. Patent something. Call her.You have nothing to lose and everything everything everything to gain"

"MONUMENTS ARE A HOAX." A conspiracy designed by bureacrats and construction companies to draw you away from the important places. The ones found off the roads, atop mountains, amidst the rivers, and mostly by chance. Marked not by placecards and statues, but by epiphanous moments that give you the sense that NO ONE INCLUDING YOURSELF MAY EVER FIND THIS PLACE AGAIN. These are the places worth seeking out. As you pass by the land-markers putting up their guardrails and snack shops, give you a friendly wave. And walk on to the place they've never been."

"It starts about the time I walk out my front door. I reach the woods, smell the river, and I just feel myself come to life again. It's like yeah, I'm back." -

Re: Quotes that make you think
Fri, March 24, 2006 - 7:12 PMI'm a big fan of Albert Einstein and this is one of my favorite pieces that he wrote on teachers and students:
My dear Children,
I rejoice to you before me to-day, happy youth of a sunny and fortunate land.
Bear in mind that the wonderful things you learn in schools are the work of many generations, produced by enthusiastic effort and infinite labour in every country of the world. All this is put into your hands as your inheritance in order that you may receive it, honour it, add to it, and one day faithfully hand it on to your children. Thus do we mortals achieve immortality in the permanent things which we create in common.
If you always keep this in mind you will find a meaning in life and work and acquire the right attitude towards other nations and ages.
~Albert Einstein
For me these words are very powerful and I would love nothing more to help children to understand that they are learning information that has developed over millions of years and that it's a gift. Sadly, they would rather play video games and text message each other on their phones! -

Wed, March 29, 2006 - 3:28 PMlove this post! here's one i'm reciting from memory, so it may not be an exact quote. something like,
it's not about ignoring the needs of others; it's about making sure our needs get factored into the equation...

Re: Quotes that make you think
Tue, April 4, 2006 - 4:29 PMI love quotes that make me think. I got all kinds of quotes for all kinds of thinking. Here's some that seem to fit the conversation so far:
Some luck lies in not getting what you thought you wanted
but getting what you have, which once you have it you
may be smart enough to see it is what you would have wanted
had you known.
- Garrison Keillor
You can't expect to hit the jackpot if you don't put a few nickels in the machine.
- Flip Wilson
_The good four._ _Honest_ with ourselves and with whatever is friend to us; _courageous_ toward the enemy; _generous_ toward the vanquished; _polite_-always: that is how the four cardinal virtues want us.
- Nietzsche
_Corruption._ The surest way to corrupt youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.

Re: Quotes that make you think
Thu, April 6, 2006 - 2:21 PM"...once we begin to feel deeply all the aspects of our lives, we begin to demand from ourselves and from our life-pursuits that they feel in accordance with that joy which we know ourselves capable of...this is a grave responsibility, projected from within each of us, not to settle for the convenient, the shoddy, the conventionally expected, nor the merely safe."
-Audre Lorde
"Sister Outsider"
"The only sound enough motivation for doing anything is joy. All other motivations, such as guilt, compulsion, obligation and duty only lead us to dissatisfaction, tension and resentment. When we are engaged in what truly gives us joy, we lead ourselves inevitably to more and more challenging, powerful work which affects more and more of the world."

Re: Quotes that make you think
Tue, April 11, 2006 - 9:10 PM"our lives begin to end the moment we become silent about the things that matter."
"others are merely mirrors of you. you cannot love or hate something about a person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself."
"the more you live, the less you die."
"the more i learn, the more i realize how little i know."
"the only perfect/normal people there are, are the ones you don't know very well."
"you must be the change you wish to see in the world" -Ghandi
