Hi all,
I'm moving back to Huntsville this summer (yay!), and I'm curious what kind of professional (even sporadic) opportunities there are to bellydance in town. I grew up in Huntsville but bellydance didn't even cross my radar until a few years into my time living in Orlando while my husband finishes grad school. I've been taking classes and have gotten to the level where I could audition for either student or professional troupes with my current teacher (Suspira), but since I'm moving I can't do a "real" audition. Anyway, the reason I'm asking is because I would really like to perform often, and sometimes professionally, and I've found a good price on a used Turkish costume I'm thinking about buying with some of Uncle Sam's stimulus package, but I'm not sure whether it would be a better investment to save that money for workshops, music, etc. Any thoughts?
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in the Huntsville bellydance community!!

Re: (Semi-)professional opportunities?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 1:08 PM...not that I think I'm good enough to dance professionally yet, but you know, I thought if I snagged the costume I could save it until I was. Or use it for haflas, etc. :-)

Re: (Semi-)professional opportunities?
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 6:06 AMThe last time I checked, paid opportunities in Huntsville were few and far between (they're nonexisistant just down the road where I am, too). Of course, there are opportunities to perform at the workshop shows. Personally I would save for workshops. Just my opinion though. :) -

Re: (Semi-)professional opportunities?
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 8:19 AMI agree with Polly...save for workshops. Even if there aren't workshops happening every month in Huntsville, there is always something going on in the Atlanta or neighboring area. If you hook up with a weekly class, you will probably be invited to their student troupe - they are semi-professional. There is also the Beledi Club of Huntsville that you can join - just need a sponsor, which you probably can find after you attend at least 2 meetings. Check out the website: www.belediclub.com for class information or you can check out The Studio - www.naughtynomads.com as well. The Studio is a dance studio with a prominent focus on Middle Eastern Dance and the home of Lumani and the Lounge Lizards. -

Re: (Semi-)professional opportunities?
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 11:05 AMThanks for the advice, ladies! I'm thinking I'll save for the Jim Boz workshop I saw on the Beledi Club's website. It sounds phenomenal. I hope I'll be moved back and settled in time for it. -

Re: (Semi-)professional opportunities?
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 8:21 AMYes indeed try to attend this event! If anything, that will give you another opportunity to meet the local dancers if you haven't already touched base with us. We are in the midst of planning the hafla for that Friday night (July 18) at the hotel. The hafla is a good way to meet the group under a not-as-stressed environment. Saturday night for the show, I know I will be pretty frazzled like usual.
