I took bellydance classes and performed twice (class choreographies) in Orlando with Suspira (www.orlandobellydance.com). I want to get back into classes up here now that we're getting settled, but I'm not sure what class(es) to go to. Suspira offered levels 1, 2, 3, 4, and Master class. After level 3 students had the option to audition for her student or professional troupes. I was in the middle of level 4 when I moved a few weeks ago, but I didn't audition because I couldn't have been in any of the troupes anyway. Also, I am about 12 weeks pregnant, so I wanted to see whether and for how long you allow pregnant dancers in your classes.

I'm moving back to Huntsville this summer (yay!), and I'm curious what kind of professional (even sporadic) opportunities there are to bellydance in town. I grew up in Huntsville but bellydance didn't even cross my radar until a few years into my time living in Orlando while my husband finishes grad school. I've been taking classes and have gotten to the level where I could audition for either student or professional troupes with my current teacher (Suspira), but since I'm moving I can't do a "real" audition. Anyway, the reason I'm asking is because I would really like to perform often, and sometimes professionally, and I've found a good price on a used Turkish costume I'm thinking about buying with some of Uncle Sam's stimulus package, but I'm not sure whether it would be a better investment to save that money for workshops, music, etc. Any thoughts?

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in the Huntsville bellydance community!!

Hooping 101

Hooping is a fun way to boost stamina, metabolism, and weight loss. Hooping is way more fun than the hula hooping you remember as a child, because the bigger and heavier the hoop, the slower it rotates around your body (making it easier for people of all shapes, sizes, and ages to do it).

About me:
After 6 years of solo belly dance and in desperate need of new inspiration, I turned to hula hooping. I was almost 200 lbs and depressed with hubby being gone to Iraq for a year. I had recently added Hoop girl (Christabel Zamor) to my friends list in Tribe.net and decided to check her out. I was floored at how cool and fun it looked. So I preceded to go to wal-mart and buy a kids hoop to try out. After learning the basic rotation and traveling, I realized I needed a better hoop, because I was hooked and wanted to learn more. So I bought a bigger, slightly heavier, easier hoop from hoopshine.com and looked up tricks and moves from hooping.org and youtube. I began to learn more and more tricks, some out of accident but it worked. Three to four months later I found myself 40 lbs lighter and inspired. Here I bring it to you to try. Smile and have fun!

Schedule:
8:00 am- 9:30 am Registration/shopping
9:30am -11:00 am Getting started
-Getting acquainted with your hoop (warm-up rotations)
-Easier, effortless ways to the basic rotation
-Traveling with the hoop
-Learning Basic Tricks: Beam me up, booty bump, shoulder isolation and easy hand isolation.

11:00am-12:30pm Lunch
12:30-2:30 Review of basic tricks
-Hoopercize (take a hoop, add some dance, add some exercise, and have a whole lot of fun!)

7:00-Hoopla! (Hoop Hafla)

Costs:
$20 for workshop
$30 workshop package (includes a hoop to take home)

There will be enough hoops for everyone to use as well as for sale. All you need to bring is comfy clothes, your best pair of tennis shoes, an open mind, and a smile.

Jim Boz is coming to Huntsville, AL!!!!!!! The Beledi Club of Huntsville will host the wonderful Boz July 18-20, 2008. All the details aren’t on the Beledi Club’s website yet, but here’s what we have so far:

•	Hafla Friday night either at the hotel of choice or The Studio … possibly wandering to my favorite local gay bar just to amuse Jim and show him off to my friends there.
•	Four hours of classes with Jim on Saturday that will be decided upon at the Club’s January meeting. Check out Beledi Club of Huntsville’s Tribe for a listing of what our options are. http://tribes.tribe.net/belediclub and to keep up to date on our progress with planning this event.
•	A few specially chosen vendors … we have invited Faye and Bipin (who just so happen to be friends of Jim’s), plus Linda (local Beledi Club Member) and Belilah (Beledi Club member) who will be selling Eye Kandy!
•	Show Saturday night at the American Legion which will be a benefit for the local ASPCA, a charity near and dear to the Bozman’s heart. There will be a cash bar and a simple menu available to order from (things like burgers, chicken fingers, fries, pizza, etc). We’re considering having a silent auction or something of the sort to help get money for the ASPCA. The Legion gives us this location for free since we do charity shows, so big kudos to them. Tickets to the show will be $10 each or included in your price if you pay for the workshop by the Early Bird deadline (June 1). Performers aren’t expected to pay for the show, but are asked to make a $5 charitable donation.
•	Three hours of classes on Sunday will be a bit more advanced than that offered on Saturday, but not beyond anyone who survives the previous 4 hours with Jim.
•	Prices are going to be great! The Early Bird Price offered is $125 if paid for by June first. This includes your ticket to the show and 7 hours of class with Jim. After June 1st, the price changes to $150. A single day of classes will be $75 if paid for before June 1st or $80 at the door.
•	We’re working on getting pricing for hotel rooms, but that’s still in the works …
•	Put this one on your calendar – you’ll kick yourself if you miss it!!!!!

This is especially geared towards students who need some ideas on how to mix and match costumes and learn to get their faces on for performances. Lots of discussion time with local costumers, teachers, and freakie people. Healthy (and not so healthy) munchies will be there for keeping the tummy happy! You need to bring your own drinks beyond the usual water --alcohol IS allowed in The Studio! We will have handouts on websites we enjoy using as well as makeup info, eBAy vendors, and patterns. Come with the lists of ideas you want to discuss and your favorite costuming. We can teach you how to adjust things that don't fit, decorate bras that need tribaling up, and make your face shine for the camera. Don't stress if you don't have much costuming --- we clothes horses will bring our stuff to share as well as some people selling their wares for those of you who could use some harem pants, a belt, or some more mascara. All this fun for only $15 and you'll get a cd of your pics to take home for your own website, tribe profile, or to share with your family.

Heather is an amazing henna artist who originally did the design I have on the back of my neck in the palm of my hand in henna. I fell in love with it and had to make it part of me permanently, so this explains why I am so crazy about her. Plus, she's an amazingly cool chickie/dancer/friend! Heather will be at The Studio from 1-4pm teaching the history, safety, and application of henna with an after party for video watching! You will receive 2 cones of henna (one for playing in class & another for taking home to get more practice), handouts of designs & how-to instructions to help you remember the stuff she teaches, and a design of your choice from the sheets she brings done on your hand all for just $25 prepaid or $30 at the door. If you want more henna work done, Heather will be available after the class to do more work during the video/dance hafla. Also, Heather will have extra cones for sale to those of you who just can't wait to henna everyone in the house (be nice to your animals!). The hafla is to be potluck, so bring along any munchies you want to share and/or pillows for lounging while watching the videos. Bring any interesting videos of shows you'd like to share with us. It's going to be loads of fun -- hope to see you there!

Jump in your jalopy with your Bee's Knees to the joint affectionately
called "The Studio" (to be renamed as "The Studio 21 Speakeasy" for the
evening of January 13, 2007) at 1219C Jordan Lane, Huntsville, AL. If you
need directions, ask the local Drugstore Cowboy - Dave. Be there 6:30 pm
to whenever the cops bust up the joint. Yes indeed, the Butlers are
hosting a PARTY! Celebrating 1920's style. So, playing by 1920's rules,
here's part some background info.

Yes, we are enforcing Prohibition Area rules – the Dry Decade as it was
also called – for the bluenoses. But, since F. Scott Fitzgerald did use
bathtub gin for the ceremonies and christened it the Jazz Age, we will be
celebrating the Roaring Twenties with music, food, and drinks of the
times. Classic parlor games will be played – but if gambling gives you the
heebie-jeebies, stay home. Roulette, Blackjack, Bunko and Poker will be
prevalent along with the giggle water and hooch.

Flappers, Lounge Lizards, Molls, Sheiks and Shebas are welcomed. Known
Torpedo’s will be asked to scram. Hoofers are welcome to entertain! And it
wouldn’t be a party unless someone got pinched. Hopefully, everyone will
whoopee over this party!

Ah applesauce!...you need a password to get in or you will be asked to
scram. Check the local paper this Friday and Saturday (or for you
futuristic people, the website) to desperately find what you are looking
for! :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer (and the 20's slang words are not prevelant in the disclaimer):
This is not a Beledi Club organized event. You do not have to be a club
member to participate in this event. This was supposed to be just a
party, and Dave and I tagged along and took over the hafla that would have
occured after the Artemis workshop (also not a Beledi Club organized
event) that is being held at The Studio this weekend. Since it is a
party, this is a party invitation, not a call for help. However, if you
would like to bring a dish or drink to share, that would be great! If you
would like to help man or play the parlor games, that would be wonderful!
And if you can help set-up or especially clean up, that would be
EXCELLENT! But, most of all, come out - dressed to the gills - and
enjoy! You do not have to be dressed in 20's era clothing, but several of
us are getting into the spirit of the event and will be dressed somewhat
appropriately. And, you still need the password to get in. :) Feel free
to pass along the invite to people that may be interested that I forgot in
this email batch...or bring them along with you to the party!

As promised at the meeting, here is a list of the workshop topics taught by Viktoriya and the link to her website. I have sent this out to the club email list, but I want it posted here so that FOB's (Friends of Beledi) can have some input too. I contacted Rhyolyn, a former student of Viktoriya's for recommendations, and she said that Viktoriya is fabulous at improv, so Rose's suggestion of the Freestyle BellyDance workshop on Sunday would be a good idea. She especially enjoys Viktoriya's drum solos and Gypsy dances. Note, the Gypsy is more of a fantasy Gypsy style than the traditional Rom style that we learned from Artemis, but Rhyolyn says it is still beautiful. Music interpretation and creating a dance character are also among Viktoriya's skills. Everybody, take a look at the list and post what you like and are interested in learning. The workshop timeframe is the 3rd weekend in August.
I want to go! It's on a Thursday night. I was going to check to see if
any of my students wanted to go and make it a big gathering. If you are
interested in tagging along and sitting with a big group, let me know how
many tickets you would like. I'm going to find out if there is a group

And while you're here you can attend the Third Annual Shahala's Toys for Tots Show which Kassar will be performing in. Come on and join us --- you could even be in the show and be able to claim that you danced on the same stage as Kassar! The price is only $75 for both days or $40 for one day as long as you pay before the day of the workshop. It will be $90 at the door for both days or $45 for one day.
ABOUT PETITE JAMILLA:
Bellydance Superstars youngest member Petite Jamilla, as pictured on the cover of “Live at the Follies Bergere” DVD has been touring with the Bellydance Superstars since January of 2004. Performing the celestial and inspiring double veil as a featured part of the show, is just a fraction of what this talented dancer has to offer. Since she was 17, Petite Jamilla has been teaching workshops that range from Zill Techniques with Modern Incorporations, Choreographed Fusion Drum Solo’s, and Spinning Introductions with Double Veil “How To’s.” By the age of 20, she had produced 2 instructional DVD’s [Beginner’s Dance Movements, and Secrets of the Double Veil] available for purchase through www.bohemianmarket.com. Cross-Cultural Fusions are a passionate focus for this dancer as her Irish/Native American ethnicity became the incentive to further explore and push the boundaries of fusion in dance. With training in Bellydance (taught by her mother, Jamilla Rasa), Polynesian, Scottish Highland, Modern Irish, and Cape Breton Step Dancing her unique blend began an unclassifiable style. Dually equipped as a classically trained musician in Western style compositions and Scottish/Irish blends - it was, of all things, the Highland Bagpipes that showcased Petite Jamilla’s talent for the critically acclaimed Rod Stewart in February of 2000.

Cheese) opens the door for registration, warming up, and friendly hellos around 9am. We will break at noon for lunch, then return at 1:30pm for the sword workshop. Workshop is $50 or $25 for one class at the door. Sword workshop doesn't have as many open slots as space is limited for use of sharp pointy things. You DON'T want to miss this! Zi'ah is spectacular! She was nominated in Zaghareet for best workshop/coordinator of 2006. She is also the teacher of Moria, one of the most luscious tribal chickies in Bellydance Super Stars. A hafla will follow at 7pm and last until Lisa and I decide we need to collapse. Hafla is open to all with either food donation or $5 studio donation per person taken at the door. BYOB, of course, and children are very welcome(and not charged donations for) as we will have quite a few lovely tribal babies to watch dance. Music will play throughout the night with a performance by Zi'ah and Rosario. If you have anything you'd like to dance to or would like to show a new choreography you are working on, you are more than welcome to share with us. Come enjoy a day with the Naughties!

Workshop I 10:00 am – 12:30 pm Professional Polish and Technique
A class for all levels! This workshop will include an in-depth warm-up, technique training through dance rather than drills, with a focus on expression through arms and more. We will also cover professional topics – NYC advice for pro’s and those aspiring to become pro’s. Q & A encouraged.
Workshop II 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm Egyptian Style Choreography

The choreography will focus on expression, layering and solid Egyptian style techniques (both modern and classic). We will also focus on use of stage space, alternate staging possibilities for the choreography and how to approach your audience. This is usable choreography for almost any event. Music is included in workshop fee. Although you do not have to take Workshop I in order to take Workshop II, it is recommended that you do so.
Goodness, I'm getting a little worried just looking at all the questions. They didn't seem that stressfull in my head. Maybe I should've kept them there!

Hey everyone!

This is our 30th Anniversary and we would like to honor it with a t-shirt. I had proposed in the meeting last night to have a design contest for the t-shirt. It was accepted. We are going to use CafePress to make the t-shirts (or anything else that you can get there, like bags, notebooks, etc). The deadline for the proposal design is March 18 - to give us time to post the entries and make the voting decision at the next meeting.

It would be nice to have the following on the design - Beledi Club, 30th Anniversary
Colors are greatly acceptable since CafePress accepts colors. If you can, look at the CafePress website for details on what their requirements are for the "pictures" to be placed on the t-shirts. Note - design for white t-shirts only. I know that CafePress used to have some black t-shirts in their inventory, but let's just focus on putting this on the white shirts.

Another thing to keep in mind is that we can still tie-dye the t-shirts. I've done that before on our 25th Anniversary shirts - so if you want to make a simple design to accomodate a tie-dye look, that would be fine.

Multiple entries are also acceptable, but the deadline is March 18.

Thanks!

(On another note: I forgot to ask what the winner of the contest would get other than we pick their design. I will be proposing that the winner gets a t-shirt as well as credit for their work. Thanks again!)

I always come out looking like me instead of a gorgeous, exotic bellydancer! Me looks old, tired, and worried about something.) I wanted to wear my lone professional costume, the turquoise bra & belt. I have lost almost 20 lbs. since I bought the thing, and I may just have to sell it because I can't get the bra to fit. I have shortened the strap that holds the cups together in the middle, adjusted the shoulder straps, and tightened the chest straps, but it is still not tight enough around to stay put, and is riding up in the back. Any suggestions? I thought I'd move the back hooks over some more, but why does it still ride up? Do I just need to attach it to a body stocking to keep it in place?

P.S. I'm also thinking that I'll get a better website than the geocities one. I can't get safiye.com, though (shoulda changed my name a long time ago, but now I'm stuck.). I gotta come up with a name, though. ACK!
There are also going to be BDSS workshops as well - Sonia, Issam, and Bozenka will be in Nashville that weekend and a Jillina workshop is in the works for Birmingham at that time.

I'm not sure I'll be doing any of the workshops...but I am interested in going to the Birmingham show if anyone in interested in catching a ride.

She has not informed me as to which day or hours I offered her. It could be on Monday nights which could affect Beledi Club rehearsals but I don't know yet. I do need to fill as many as the studio's hours with money coming in. I will always make free hours available to Beledi Club rehearsals. We all need to remain flexible. You have to understand that in a dance studio the prime time for classes is 5:30 to 8:30 Mon thru Thursday. We have already switched some hours at the studio and some rearranging will happen from time to time. Sorry for the confusion but I need to take care of the business also. I will let Beledi club members know of any changes that would affect the monday night rehearsal slot. Thanks, Lisa
