A lot of people have been asking me how I'm able to get such good attendance at my events. My answer is that I'm very agressive about marketing! To help my fellow dancers and other artists learn how to get the word out for their events, my troupe will be hosting Shira (from Shira.net) in a Marketing the Arts seminar this August.

The seminar will be held Saturday, August 11. The location is yet to be established (very likely the P.S. Collective or Benson Community Center here in Omaha) but details & cost will be provided as plans are confirmed. Shira will also be presenting a Bellydance in Egyptian Film Seminar, and a hafla will be sure to follow in the evening!

Here's a little more info about Shira and her marketing seminar:

Julie Elliot holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa, 1979, with double major in journalism and French. She also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa, 1982. Since then, she has spent her entire career in sales and marketing, working in the high tech industry. In 2001, she became director of marketing at Informix Software, a company with revenues of $1 billion per year. Since then, Informix was acquired by IBM, which is where she currently works. Outside of her corporate environment, she uses her marketing and sales knowledge to promote her activities in dance.

  • I received a question on bhuz about this, so I thought it might be helpful to post the answer here on tribe as well.

The question was whether it would be lecture only, or whether there would be exercises, too.

It will be both. The marketing class in Omaha will be 2 hours long. I'll open it by introducing some basics, then pause for an exercise in which people make written notes on their handouts regarding how those basics apply to their specific situation. People can either team up to do the exercises together (such as members of a dance troupe might do), or work individually, whichever they prefer. Then, after allowing a bit of time for the first exercise, I move on and introduce some more concepts, then move to a second exercise to give people a chance to write notes on how to apply those. And so it goes. When they leave, people will be able to take with them a handout with all the text from my PowerPoint slides plus their written notes from the exercises.

The content will include competition, target marketing, brand identity, the four P's of marketing, advertising, features vs benefits of what you're selling, flyers, posters, networking, press releases, dealing with the media...
