BellyCraft AUDITIONS!!!

BellyCraft is back from performing in New York City, inspired, and is seeking to expand our belly dance company. This is a unique opportunity to become a member of BellyCraft and/or our sister troupe Coven! BellyCraft and its Coven are a Gothic Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Company based in South East Florida directed by Alicia.

We are dedicated to working and playing hard, pushing boundaries, creating and promoting the evolution of Gothic Tribal Fusion Bellydance. We have lots planned for 2009; this is your chance to be a part of it!

DATE, TIME and LOCATION
Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 2pm
Lotus Dance Studio
9117 Taft Street
Pembroke Pines, FL 33024

Audition Specifics:
The audition is open to versatile, strong, professional, advanced and intermediate level belly dancers who are ready to commit them selves to steadfast hard work. Active belly dancers who are open and ready to push themselves technically and artistically into new directions are encouraged to audition for our dance company.

Arrive up to 20 minutes early, in full stage costume, hair and make-up.
A short (3-4 minutes) solo will be required for finalists. Special skills a plus.
A resume, headshot and body shot are recommended but not required.
Video clip on a CD or YouTube address are pluses as well.

Phase 1: Registration & Pictures
Fill out a sheet with your name, address & contact information (attach resume & photos). Photos are taken of each audition participant.

Phase 2: Preliminaries
A short, group choreography will be taught by Alicia. Be ready to belly dance solo, improv, partnering, floor work, veil & finger cymbals.

Phase 3: Finals
A member of the adjudication panel will call back individual dancers from the preliminaries that they liked. Each finalist must then present a prepared solo performance (3-4 minutes).

Phase 4: Thank you – finalists will be contacted within 7 days of the audition

Requisites to audition are:
• Must be at least 16 years of age
• Must have at least TWO years of consistent formal training in belly dance –experience in other dance styles and performance art are pluses
• Must be talented
• Must be comfortable with performing in front of small & large audiences
• Must be physically fit
• Must be a resident of South Florida, where the company is located
• Must be willing and able to attend the minimum required classes with Alicia
• Must be proficient in playing finger cymbals while dancing
• Must be willing and able to attend all scheduled rehearsals
• Must be willing and able to purchase required costuming
• Must be willing and able to supply their own shoes/footwear, makeup, hair accessories and jewelry
• Must be willing and able to hand sew personal costuming (machine sewing skills a plus!)
• Must be consistently punctual
• Must have great communication with the director
• Must be open to direction and constructive criticism

Please note that several of the above requisites are not fixed but variable dependant on overall performance.

Company members must be available to commit to performing throughout south Florida on the weekends and attend weekly rehearsals in Pembroke Pines at Lotus Dance Studio. Please note that additional personal practice, classes and workshops may be required. Technique is learned and drilled in classes, not at rehearsals. Company members must maintain an updated Google Calendar shared with the director.

Company Belly Dance Requirements: Must attend a minimum of one day of Alicia's Tribal Fusion Bellydance classes per week: Wednesdays 6pm to 7:30pm at Bozenka’s Bellydance Academy and/or Thursdays 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Lotus Dance Studio (2 classes back-to-back) as well as all scheduled rehearsals.

Weekly Rehearsal Schedule: Fridays 6:30pm-8:30pm &/OR Saturdays 5:00pm-7:00pm at Lotus Dance Studio in Pembroke Pines. NOTE: Rehearsals may (and will, as needed) go OVER in time – company members are expected to stay as late as needed. Additional rehearsals are added (as needed) on Thursdays 9:30pm-11pm and /or Sundays 1pm–3pm.

Monthly Rehearsal Cost: (to cover studio rental costs) is a minimum of $30 /maximum of $60 per month, per member. The exact cost depends on the amount of rehearsal hours that are scheduled for that month.

I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by so much talent here in South Florida. We are truly a diverse and unique bellydance community that remains genuinely passionate about our artform and as dedicated to its myriad of current expressions as we are to their evolution and integration.

TAROT - a fantasy bellydance concert

For those of you who happen to be in NYC on Nov.1 and 2, please join us for our Venus Uprising semi-annual event. This fall our fantasy bellydance concert theme is Tarot - every dance portrays archetypal images based on Tarot cards. It's going to be a beautiful and unique show, with a spectacular array of solos and group numbers. All pieces are very different: We are not a dance company, each number is conceived and choreographed by the artists who present it, so the variety of styles and creative thinking is incredible.

We'll have large-scale theatrical compositions, like "Wheel of Fortune" (the story of Cleopatra) and "Lust" by Sarah Skinner, Kazja and The Sisters of Salome; Tribal / Tribal fusion numbers by Sarah Locke's "Alchemy Dance Theater", Fayzah and her group "Aurea Dancers," Irina, Tribal Fusion / Gothic "BellyCraft," Alicia and Heather from Miami FL.

It'll be a lot of fun, plus a wine reception after our Saturday's show.

Hosted by Alina, this dance jam promotes community and networking for all tribal dancers. The format is basically ATS style. While you don't have to be an experienced ATS dancer, please understand that this will be the format we are doing...It's an open chorus with alternating leaders and followers in the center. How much or how little you dance is up to you.... It is not intended to be a class or a workshop nor is it a performance,so if you want to come "lightly" dressed in costume, keep that in mind. It's just group improv dancing for the fun of it. No pressure! Maybe you'll pick up a few moves you never saw before, make some new friends --that's the idea!!! Dancers of all levels and styles are welcome to watch or participate. Potluck!!!! Bring a dish or beverage to share!

my deepest apologizes to Bellycraft

I performed the dance “Tainted Love” without the consent of the true owners; Bellycraft. I in no way can or would take credit for the choreography/veil work that was performed. The veil work/wraps in that choreography is incredible and creative beyond compare!

It was never my intention to take credit for this dance. I was in all honesty trying to contact the person I thought was the creator. However, I should have never performed it without contacting the owners directly beforehand.

My deepest apologizes to Alicia, Heather and Summer of Bellycraft who painstakingly created this extraordinary piece and did not receive the credit that they deserve.

On Saturday June 23rd Lotus Dance Studio will host its first party/show and you are all invited to perform. If you are an instructor, you are more than welcomed to showcase your top student talent in a troupe format, however solos are also welcomed. You may also bring your class/studio flyers to promote your classes/studios or events.

Additionally, on Sunday, June 24th, Alicia of BellyCraft and Lisa Myers of Melbourne's Troupe Adelpha will be teaching workshops in Tribal Fusion and Tribal Improvisational Styles.

There will also be a drum workshop instructed by Jesse Myers and I am specially excited about this.

first of all, I've updated this event. I changed the date to Sunday March 25th (same bat time, same bat channel) to make it a bigger and hotter weekend!

On Satruday, March 24th, Adeela does All Fired Up at Lotus, she teaches us how to safely dance with fire fans, fire palms, fire fingers and more! Then that same night, we are burning at a private backyard show (location will be disclosed to those who wish to attend, potluck and fire by the lake, what more can we ask for. Farasha is coming on Saturday to burn and dance with us and you are all invited!!!

Tai lived in Cuba where she learned the Dances of the Orishas and so much more on Afro Cuban Folklore. Lotus is lucky to have her every Monday after the African Drum Class (it all starts at 7:30pm) and as if that wasn't all,

This class is not a religious one, only the history behind the dances are taught. Cuba's rich African history is being taught through dance and I am very proud to host it.

I just wanted to remind my troupe mates (Alicia and Summer, this means you) how much I LOVE them, how much fun I have dancing with them, creating with them, being amazed by them, and LAUGHING my ass off. It is one of the most healing practices I have ever known and I am SO GRATEFUL for it. I can't tell you how many times I've come to rehearsal tattered and torn and left whole again, with renewed hope and a repaired connection to my happy self. While I'm at it, I want to throw out some love to ALL of those I have had an opportunity to dance with, esp. my Magic of Bellydance peeps, and esp. esp. Miss Shri-Shambhala. Mushy mushy lovey dovey wovey.

hey, last night (wed) heather, daniella, and I went to the drum circle in delray. the one that michael puts on. We had an awesome time. It was a small group of TALENTED drummers. I don't think i've ever been to a drum circle where people are actually listening to each other and playing together. They were so great. We will definately be going back to that one. (it goes on every wed.). it's so good to just improvise and play around sometimes. heather and i always get ideas from it, too.

btw, the drummers were extremely impressed when we did a little ATS. alina, please teach us more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we're so hungry for ATS goodies.

i heard that there is a big drumcircle in september, the pagan one and it is supposed to be awesome... let's go.

You know, as a bellydance fan novice, it occured to me that after the MEDE event, my being completely impressed with you guys and thinking that you were head and shoulders above the rest of the troupes, was in part because I had had limited exposure to bellydancing in general.

I went to Spirit of the Tribes Vol. 6 last night, and saw troupes from all over the country..>Wisconson, Ohio, Jersey...etc. SO now that I'm a little more bellydance wordly...

You guys are more creative, innovative, and just flat out better dancers in total than really any of the now couple of dozen troupes I've watched. I left last night thinking, "They shoulda headlined Bellycraft...it woulda been a better show."

And that 's the truth, y'all.

Don't let the ups and downs and challenges of pursuing the things you are passionate about disuade you from continuing to chase your dreams. You guys rock. If I was going to try and convince someone that bellydancing defied their preconceived notions about it, I would take them to watch you guys perform to prove my point.

spirit of the tribes this weekend!

I was just thinking of all of the FUN we are gonna have this weekend at spirit of the tribes and I wanted you all to know what to expect.

Bring dance shoes, knee pads and a yoga mat.
The floor is very hard and very cold and life would SUCK with out ALL of the above. Of course a notebook & pen, water, snacks, towel... I could go on forever :)

Oh, and they might be charging for parking, but last year it was good all day.

Shimmy-a-thon 2006 planning is underway- mark your calendars for Sept 23rd. Last year's event raised over $16K for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and we are hoping to raise $20k this year.

For those of you who participated, donated or came to the event last year, thank you for your support and we hope we can count on you again this year! Currently information about last year's event is out there; so those of you who missed it can get an idea of what we are about.

I’m impressed with your ability to take risks, but this was the perfect venue, the perfect time and the perfect audience and you shined!

KEN - what can I say. You always make our performances so special with your drumming, but this time, you outdid yourself. Your bootie dance was amazing, man. You can really “get down” Thank you for drumming for us again, I look forward to many more drum sessions with you in the future.

Fikarrajaii - thank you for your hard effort to be there, although you didn’t get to dance this time, I am sure I’ll get to see you real soon. (I totally understand how difficult it is to find the Wallflower). There’s always a next time.

I've had a number of inquiries about my qualifications, so I thought I would share a little. I went to Law School at Loyola in Los Angeles. I am proud to say that Loyola is one of the best law schools in the country for entertainment law. I have taken a number of courses (Contracts, Copyright, Entertainment Law, Patent and Trademark Law, Internet & Technology, Music Law, and Television Production & Program Financing). I have studied with the leading scholars and attorneys in the field. Further, during my eight years in LA, I worked with and was friends with a number of casting agents, talent managers, directors, producers and business executives. I am confident in my ability to address the copyright and trademark issues facing dancers and hope that you are too!

NEW Tribal Fusion class in Pembroke Pines, FL

After debating with myself (and some of you) for the past few of months, I figured I would ask those who might be interested what they think.

On Friday, January 6, 2006, I would like to begin a new Tribal Fusion Belly Dance class at my studio, One Dragon Martial Arts in Pembroke Pines.
My question is what TIME? AM or PM
The only classes held on Friday's is our Judo club from 6-7:30p.
So, for the class I was debating between
11a-12:30p OR 8p-9:30p

What do you people think?
Am I the only one who would give up their Friday night to belly dance?
Is there anyone out there who is actually available on Friday mornings?

choreography class

Hey, All!
I assume it's okay to post this here since Alicia said to post items about instruction/events.

I'm starting a choreography class tonight at Belly Motions studio 430 South Dixie Highway (almost on the corner of LeJuene Road). The phone # is 305-663-1553 and my # is 305-803-4402

It is a 4 week course (***skipping next week for the Belly dance Meet-up show***) at 7:45 Mondays. It's not tribal style, but it is a nice veil and drum solo combo- two songs, so they can be performed together or seperately. You may perform or teach these yourself once you learn them. It's $40 for the course or you can pay by the class $12. We will likely perform this at Sunset Place sometime next month (which is optional, of course!). Hope to see some of you there!

Ethics - moral principles; standard practises; and even etiquette (good manners) are important elements in the dance world and should be part of dancers' education. Dance teachers--who inspire as well as teach their students--should not only include concepts of ethics and standard practises in their curriculum, but also lead by example.
As dance students grow in skill and ability, some decide to step up to a professional or public level in teaching and/or performing. Unless they give forethought to ethical decision-making and become aware of standard practises, their inexperience often leads to mistakes that have far-reaching effects. Even innocent mistakes can cause hurt feelings and rifts in the dance community.
Unprofessional habits are often passed from teacher to student - the result of when people who lack extensive knowledge and adequate training begin teaching or performing. Some common concerns are
- use of harmful dance techniques
- illegally reproducing music or video
- detrimental presentations of the dance
- falsely representing others' choreography as original
- spreading malicious gossip and rumours about other artists
- scheduling conflicting events in a local area
- undercutting and lowering wage standards.
These negative actions impact how the public perceives the dance and can also create a hostile environment within the dance community.
Professionalism
Oriental (belly) Dance is a specific form of dance derived from various cultural sources and folkdances, not jazz, modern, ballet, hip-hop, "club" or recreational dancing done in a bellydance costume. If you perform or teach, even if you don't make a living by doing so, set your standards high. Even hobbyists can produce work of "professional caliber" by gaining a broader understanding of the dance form, adhering to high standards, and following sound ethical principles.
There's no consensus on the definition of "professional" - a professional could be someone who
• teaches or performs for pay
• derives most or all of their income by teaching or performing
• holds themself out to the community as a professional (not student) teacher or performer
• consistently maintains high standards in these areas.
Professionals take dancing and performing seriously. They don't demean the dance in the public's eye by treating it as a joke or of negligible value; nor do they encourage or condone disrespect for the art or it's proponents.
Should You Follow a Code of Conduct?
I researched codes of conduct for the professional organizations of consultants, coaches, music teachers and tennis players; and also asked the opinions of students and other teachers or performers to put together my personal Code of Conduct (see link below). It is clear that for bellydance teachers and performers, following a formal code of conduct has two important benefits:
1. it builds strong and beneficial relations within the dance community;
2. it promotes positive perceptions of the dance outside of the dance community.
This code outlines the principles I consider essential in promoting an ethical dance community, and in professional dance performance and education. They are examples of self-regulation among those who aspire to high levels of artistic endeavor in teaching or performing. I pledge to do my best to follow this guideline and I also urge others in the dance community to consider following it or their own. Taking this public step can help avoid the common "falling outs" that happen so often in dance communities; and our actions will reflect the honor and uplifting influence of the dance even when viewed by the general public.
Liberty - freedom of choice
Some Oriental Dance organizations require adherence to their ethics or conduct codes and promise disciplinary action if neglected. A pledge of honor requires no signatures, just honest intention. Mistakes will be surely be made; but honest mistakes can lead to growth. Exercising your free will while still respecting others' rights brings true liberty to all involved.

Code of Conduct
This code outlines the principles I consider essential in promoting an ethical dance community, and in professional dance performance and education. They are examples of self-regulation among those who aspire to high levels of artistic endeavor in teaching or performing.
As a teacher, performer, and troupe leader, I will promote honorable behaviour among my students and dancers; divisive, deceitful, or disloyal behaviour will not be tolerated in my classes or other activities. I will be impartial and fair if asked to mediate in student conflicts.
I pledge to:
• promote ethical behavior to students and to the general public
• be honest in financial matters; regarding copyrighted material; and in representing credentials)
• be reliable; punctual; and honor commitments
• avoid improprieties, as well as the appearance of improprieties (i.e., bachelor parties, lap dancing, suggestive behavior, inappropriate touching)
• maintain or raise wage standards if possible.
The foremost priority is honorable behaviour that is considerate and fair towards others.

Happy 40th Birthday Cameron!

Our mission to surprise the birthday boy was a success! Cameron is one of my best friends, former south beach roommate and the big brother I never had. It was (his wife’s) Shauna’s idea to have us perform at his party and everything turned out perfect. I am so happy we where finally able to surprise the guy that always does the surprising.
