I should have known better. I told my dad I'd taken a yoga class and loved it. This week, a book on yoga arrived. I'll only looked at the back--it's basically yoga=eastern religion=a no-no for Christians. Now, I know yoga has connections to eastern religion and is very much a part of the modern spiritualist movement. However, I think that it is not inherently religious, when stripped of the meditation aspect. The yoga class I'm taking in on an air force base, has no meditation practices, and the focus is on an effective workout. Personally, I loved it. Additionally, with the exception of the half-moon pose that I still can't do, every pose we've done I've already learned from other "western" workouts. Plus, RB's "Yoga Drills for Belly Dancers" has been part of my bd practice for years.
Do you think yoga is inherently part of eastern religion and that the two cannot be separated? Is practicing yoga practicing Hinduism? If so, and you do not practice eastern religion, does that trouble you? Or do you think it in a form of exercise that has been attached to religion, and can easily be separated?

Re: Is Yoga Religion?
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 1:22 PMI, personally, wouldn't consider yoga to be religion, but then I'm not as dedicated a follower as some are... :)
To me, yoga is a great way for me to make myself a bit more bendy (which I desperately need!) and also a good way to relax. However, I only really do yoga from DVDs, which tend to be very "beginner-friendly" and don't focus on the spiritual side of it.
Mind you, in some ways I suppose it could become a religion for some people, in the sense that some people see going to the gym (for instance) as a religion... :/ -

Re: Is Yoga Religion?
Tue, February 20, 2007 - 8:43 AMI think yoga involving meditation is more a philosophy than a religion...and something that can become a lifestyle, which would surely affect your beliefs about certain things. (Although I don't know that it could cause one to turn away from their own personal religious beliefs.)
I've read all the arguments and there are a lot of Christians out there who shy away from yoga. But I also think some of them are grossly misinformed. There are many types of yoga, some include meditation and some don't. I think as a system of exercise, it is not dangerous for a Christian to do. (And there are many stretches based on yoga, so there are a lot of Christians going to "regular" exercise classes and doing yoga poses and never even knowing it.)

Re: Is Yoga Religion?
Tue, February 20, 2007 - 9:57 AMI finally glanced through the book. It had one page on "can it just be exercise?" which was terribly unconvincing and then basically went on to the meditative aspects. So now I'm debating through the book out (I can never bring myself to throw out books) or send it to my parents and see what happens... -
