Anybody hear of a hafla that was going to "show Richmond how it's done" this weekend? Friday night or Saturday night at a place in Richmond called Meze or Meze Restaurant or something like that? I have a free Friday AND Saturday night and would very much like to see how it is done ...

Yes, it's at "Mezza Restaurant" from 9-11pm on Saturday night.
Kalaa, Brianna (formerly Samira) & Taaj are performing.
Mezza is down near VCU, I'm thinking W. Main but I don't remember the address they gave.
They're having food, professional dancing, shisha pipes, and debke, so be sure and take your hip scarf so you can dance too! :)

Gosh, this would be the perfect tribe to post about the event. I wonder why it's not listed.

Yeah, good point, I dunno. There WAS an email going around with time and date and address, but there was never any mention of a $25 door fee! Yikes. Too rich for my unemployed blood.

It's listed under Events (but still no mention of a door fee, strange). Here's what was posted, for those who wish to "see what a hafla is meant to be":

    Hi Geoff,

I sent out an e-mail about the event to instructors in Richmond: maybe I don't have Shari's email?? I'll check and get back to you. I thought I had everyone's. If not, I am SO very sorry.

It was a ton of fun! The event was well received by the audience, and the restaurant staff seemed thrilled with it.

If you figure $12 for the dinner and $10 cover charge for the dancing, it was VERY reasonable. I usually spend MORE than that on a weekend evening out. However, yes, I too was surprised to find that it was $22 a person when I called to make reservations! Even when I sent out the above mentioned email, I didn't know about the $22.

Either way, the $22 included a dinner of chicken kabobs, beef kabobs, or kibbeh and stuffed grape leaves, all with rice, tabbouli, and hummous, and a soft drink. Extras were a wide variety of beer including some from Lebanon and Armenia, as well as three or four selections of middle eastern wines. Plus hookah.

The tables were completely booked for the dinner--many middle easterners!--and between the eating, drinking, hookah smoking, and dancing all seemed to enjoy themselves. Kalaa got them, and us, up dancing early during her set, then Taaj danced, then Brianna. We did Debke between the sets too. Each danced 15-20 minutes and they all graciously stayed until the end of the official festivities, which was around 11:00 or so. They were all lovely and professional.

Excellent, I'm glad that things worked out and that it was an unqualified success. Especially nice to hear some good news in this otherwise dismal newscape of lay-offs, financial ruin and the general sinking morale that keep people at home instead of getting out and enjoyint the arts.

I wish that there was a way to see good dancing in Richmond without the whole thing being rolled into DINNER (I mean, I don't generally order pizza slices at the opera or corn dogs at an art gallery) ... most of the Greek, Italian, Indian and so-called Middle Eastern restaurants in Richmond are mediocre, tacky and overpriced. I guess I tend to think of good dancing as more of an art form that meal-time sideshow entertainment ... and I get a little resentful when I have to order some barely edible, overpriced spaghetti dish in a stripmall restaurant with filthy carpets, harsh lighting and faded, curling posters of the Acropolis on the walls ... but that is another topic, I guess. It's nice to hear that Mezza was a classier venue than most.
