Hello, all.
I was talking to some restaurant owners recently, and they told me that they are interested in setting up a steady belly dance gig at their restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights, culminating in a huge New Years party at the end of the year.
I'm in a weird position with this, as these people would rather work through me, at least initially ... but the last thing I want to do is become the coordinator of this arrangement ... especially the unpaid coordinator, at that, the one who gets called at the last minute and has to find a sub, ha ha. So, I guess I'm willing to be the initial go-between, make the first round of introductions and help work out some the knots in the contracts, but after that, I think the business of bellydancing is best left to the business owners and the belly dancers.
Here's the other catch ... As is the case in so many other restaurant gigs, there was a clear, spoken expectation that the dancers be "professional and young" ... and the hinted expectation that they be "pretty" and "slender" ... At the time, I didn't feel like ruining an otherwise pleasant conversation with some culture-clashing, values-based debate about art and sexism, etc, so I just said that I would pass the word along.
If anybody is interested, PM me on Tribe for my personal email address and home phone number, and we can talk about this more, including details about the restaurant, etc. Thanks.

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 9:09 AMSeems to me, the best place to start would be for the restaurant to host a Hafla. Maybe that would seem too much like auditioning…
I don't know. Just thinking. (Plus I'm not in Richmond… but I'd love to find the place next time I'm in Richmond if there are performances going on.) -

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 9:29 AMYeah, a hafla as an audition or recruitment tool could be a handy thing, but haflas come with their own challenges and problems ... One bad hafla (mediocre dancing, poor audience attendance, low receipts at the end of the night, regular customer complaints, etc) could conceivably sour the deal and scare these owners away from live belly dancing forever. -

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 1:17 PMI'm way too far to consider it. I just wanted to say "go you!" Geoff! I hope it all progresses smoothly and successfully. :)

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 7:47 AMjust saw your post- I'd stay away from haflas, they're a whole different kettle of fish than a restaurant featuring a dancer.
I hope the local dancers are getting together to brainstorm what they want to see happen, and then go & negotiate with the manager. Let us know how it works out - -

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 8:06 PMIt's been more than a month, and I haven't heard a single peep from a single dancer, so I'm just going to let the guy know that nobody is interested. No big deal. -

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 6:33 AMare you kidding?? I find that totally amazing. Is the place a dump or something? Because over the years I've heard numerous complaints from Richmond dancers about how there's no steady restaurant gigs -
Of course dancers know restaurants want a certain image - but surely there's some down there who fit the bill & woudl like the job - I'm really surprised! -

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 8:40 AMI've passed this info on to some other dancers, but most of the ones I'm tight with wouldn't fit the request of the owner in this case.

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 5:10 AMNo, it's brand new, shiny, clean and nicely laid out, with a lot of wide, open spaces for a dancer to navigate around (at least, relative speaking to the narrow aisles of high-backed booths that seem to characterize most Richmond restaurants), and well-packed with customers on Fridays and Saturdays ... My main concerns about this gig are the rather blunt physical characteristic requirements expressed by the owner, and the geographic location, all the way down in Chester. Other than that, it's a great restaurant, with very nice food and a pleasant family owning and staffing it. -

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 1:28 PMI know it's not politically correct, but it's a business reality that most clients want young, pretty, fit dancers. It's the same for other dance forms. I don't see anything wrong with that as it's the client's money that he/she's spending, but it does limit the possibilities.

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 8:21 AMHey Geoff,
There is a Virginia Belly Dancers yahoo group that covers all of VA. You may want to post the gig info on that site and it might stir up some more interest.
groups.yahoo.com/group/VAbellydancers
You have to be a member to post. If you aren't on there as a member already just let me know and I can add you. It's open to all belly dancers and musicians. We've had the site since 2003 and have regular posts and discussions there.
Thanks,
Chandani

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 6:39 AMHi Geoff,
I know of someone who would be interested but she's not on tribe.net. I can also post this on the yahoo group for Richmond Performers.
Is it ok to pass along your regular contact info for non-tribers?
Thanks,
Z -

Re: New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 3:32 PMI don't live in Richmond but would be willing to come up and dance - alternate weekends with other dancers in the area.

***UPDATE***
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 8:49 AMHello, all, and thanks to everybody who has offered advice and recently expressed interest in this restaurant gig.
Unfortunately, I have just learned that the owners of this restaurant have a pretty rotten history of treating belly dancers in a very disrespectful and unprofessional way in the recent past, and I'm no longer interested in working with them. I am in no way saying that it would be wrong for dancers to perform there and support the place, if they so choose ... but, given what I've learned, I really don't feel comfortable being a part of it.
Thanks again for your interest.
