Two Middle Eastern Darbukas / Dumbeks For Sale

I have two very different, very cool Middle Eastern drums for sale. In Turkey, they are called ‘darbuka’ … in Egypt, ‘tabla’ … while most people in the USA and Europe call them ‘doumbek’or ‘dumbek’. They are great for playing all kinds of Middle Eastern, Balkan and World music, and they are frequently found at belly dance parties and drum circles all over the Central Virginia area. Despite the simple design and structure of the drum, a good darbuka player can achieve many, many different sounds and techniques, ranging from deep, bass tones pulled from the center of the drumhead to crisp, high-pitched, tones found at the drumhead’s rim.

The first (photos #1 and #3) is a used Daveed Korup signature series darbuka made by Mid-East Manufacturing. It is a 17 ½” tall, clay / ceramic drum with a rough, almost sandy texture that really keeps the drum from slipping and sliding around while you’re playing it. It has a permanently mounted, non-tunable nine and one-half inch (9 ½”) Remo FiberSkyn head and a extremely narrow rim that makes all kinds of rim-playing techniques (including Turkish split-finger techniques) a lot easier than other, more traditional darbukas. It has a good combination of medium-deep bass tones and crisp rim-tones. The ceramic shell is a medium olive green color, has Daveed Korup’s distinctive “Seeds of Time” design in bas-relief and was designed by Daveed to be played across the lap (Middle Eastern style) or between the knees (African djembe style); there is one small knick in the drumhead (at the side, NOT on the playing surface) that I have patched with a drop of cyanoacrylate. This drum does not have a case. Last I checked, these drums were no longer in production. I am asking $110 for this drum.

The second (photos #2 and #4) drum is a new Syrian darbuka, made by Ikaa Diab, very typical of the kind of darbukas being used by every working percussionist from Cairo to Athens to Ýstanbul. This one is a medium-weight aluminum cast drum covered in a flat black vinyl / synthetic leather covering with an artifical snakeskin pattern. It stands 16 ½” tall and has a standard 8 5/8” pale blue Mylar synthetic drumhead that produces higher-end bass tones and the extremely crisp, machinegun-like rim-strikes that are essential to lead and solo playing, tuned to be heard above the rest of the percussion and melody instruments in the band. This drum is tunable and has six bolts in the collar. It comes with an inexpensive nylon case. I am asking $100 for this drum.

I live in the Museum District in Richmond, VA, but I can also arrange to meet with you in the Charlottesville and Northern Virginia areas, as well. Please here at Tribe.net if you have any questions or need additional photos and/or soundfiles. Thanks for your time!

New Steady Restaurant Dance Gig Possibility

Hello, all.

I was talking to some restaurant owners recently, and they told me that they are interested in setting up a steady belly dance gig at their restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights, culminating in a huge New Years party at the end of the year.

I'm in a weird position with this, as these people would rather work through me, at least initially ... but the last thing I want to do is become the coordinator of this arrangement ... especially the unpaid coordinator, at that, the one who gets called at the last minute and has to find a sub, ha ha. So, I guess I'm willing to be the initial go-between, make the first round of introductions and help work out some the knots in the contracts, but after that, I think the business of bellydancing is best left to the business owners and the belly dancers.

Here's the other catch ... As is the case in so many other restaurant gigs, there was a clear, spoken expectation that the dancers be "professional and young" ... and the hinted expectation that they be "pretty" and "slender" ... At the time, I didn't feel like ruining an otherwise pleasant conversation with some culture-clashing, values-based debate about art and sexism, etc, so I just said that I would pass the word along.

If anybody is interested, PM me on Tribe for my personal email address and home phone number, and we can talk about this more, including details about the restaurant, etc. Thanks.

Goochland student hafla

Hi,

I have just started teaching again and my students want to perform. I have told them about the two regular student haflas in Richmond, but they aren't quite hooked yet and are not at the point where they will dance at anything, so they think it's too far. Soooo, I am considering putting together a student hafla in Goochland, but don't have enough performers yet to really pull it off. I am wondering if there is anyone in the Richmond area who is interested in dancing if I can get something together in June?

Thanks in advance,
Taaj

She is the premiere instructor of Gothic Bellydance in North America, and her extensive work in the genre has helped to define and develop the movement across the world. Her compelling performances exemplify her distinctively theatrical and expressionate style, and are rooted in oriental dance technique with a transcendent approach. Her costume designs have revolutionized the look of modern bellydance, and continue to inspire new and old generations of dancers alike. www.darklydramatic.com
Two 90 minute workshops are being offered for the low cost of $35.00. It's a steal!

Dramatic Body Language – At the heart of Gothic Belly Dance is the ability to express deep emotions through the dance in a dramatic style. While in theory, this makes sense, understanding how to make this happen physically is another matter. How does one go about transferring matters of the heart, mind, and spirit into a corporeal expression? In this workshop, we learn to take regular belly dance movements and add Gothic accents to them, focusing on expressing emotion, intent, and power through our steps and presence. From facial expression to fingertips, we’ll be dissecting the accents that give Gothic Belly Dance extra substance, drama, and excitement. You’ll take home movement embellishments and flourishes to incorporate into your own style. This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

Nouveau Noir Dance – Haunting audiences around the globe, Tempest’s area of specialty within the realm of Gothic Bellydance is “Nouveau Noir” – dance pieces that reflect the art and society of the early 1900’s, pulling from silent films, vaudeville-Denishawn style, art nouveau, art deco, and the Oriental craze. Students will learn combinations that capture the elegant form, fluid movement, and dramatic stylings of these eras, while being taught in a format that will enable them to absorb them into their own personal choreographies.

Tempest will also be having some of her wonderful dark creations available for purchase! Bring Cash!

As some of you know, we had a meeting yesterday about getting restaurant dancing started in Richmond. I contracted Mezza Saturday, so that will kick it off, but I will need help to get it going and keep it going. We also talked about starting a student/practice venue so that people can gain performing experience in a practice environment.

I have started a Yahoo group so that people interested in dancing or working up to it can all talk with each other efficiently and work together. If you aren't decided and are just curious to see what's going on, come on by. The group is located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RICperformers.

The Accidental Circus in Richmond!

Re-united! The Accidental Circus:

* Richmond's own Paolo Garbanzo, Official Jester of England,
* Mab Just Mab, DC's Own Sideshow Girl, &
* The Mezmer Society of Asheville, NC.

Join The Accidental Circus for an evening of Darwinism in Action & Luscious Cabaret.

Friday, April 10th - doors open at 7:00
Art 6 Studio - 6 East Broad Street

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and can be purchased at http://mabjustmab.com/concessionstand/tickets/

The Mezmer Society demonstrates to the general public that, after a 60 year hiatus, it is once more permissible to dance to an accordion. Artistic collaborators August Hoerr and Onca O'Leary are hard-riding highwaymen of mayhem, spreading the Mezmer gospel throughout the States. Zany bellydance antics, torchsongs, and sinister accordionism are blended at high speed into a tall, cool, glass of delicious and intoxicating performance. Great for geeks, goths, and anyone who wants extreme festivity.

Mab Just Mab is a one-woman sideshow extravaganza of Things Not To Do: walking on glass, swallowing inappropriate objects, letting strangers tie her up and watch her attempt escape. Warning: this wild-woman will literally say and do anything to entertain you...

Defying both Death and Darwinism with knives, fire and extreme audience participation, Paolo performs year-round for crowds all over the US and Europe. He has been a member of the famous Flying Karamazov Brothers, been given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Juggling Association, and is the first American ever to win the titles Jester of England and Official Jester of Muncaster Castle.

Collaborators since 2002, these world travelers are once again coming together for a shared billing right here in Paolo's own hometown. This show promises danger, humour, beauty and song all in the first act. Bring your loved ones to dazzle them. Bring your enemies because, well, anything is possible when 5 knives are in the air...

Affordable and Professional Darbuka Lessons

Just wanted everybody in the Richmond area to know that I am now offering musical instruction in beginner and intermediate level Turkish-, Arabic- and Balkan-style darbuka.

Lessons will include:

proper body position
holding the drum and proper form
buying and appraising new and used drums
relaxation and breathing
time signature, meter, tempo and rhythm
different styles of Middle Eastern drumming
mastering the DUM, TEK and KA strokes
technique-building drills
good practice skills
intermediate ornaments such as shaves, flams and sliding strokes
single-stroke rolls
Turkish split-finger rolls
Persian riz rolls
Arabic-style rolls
triplets
paradiddles
Balkan pulse-based meters
customizing basic Middle Eastern rhythms
odd meter time signatures (including Turkish Roman 9/8 rhythms)
drumming for a percussion ensemble
drumming as part of a full musical ensemble
drumming for belly dancers
participating in drum circles
other Middle Eastern percussion instrumentation (riqq, frame drum, davul)

I offer reasonable private and small group rates.

I have been playing and performing Middle Eastern percussion music since 2000, and I am a licensed teacher with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Education. I can also help beginning students find and buy a new drum, and I can rent them a drum, sell them a drum, or allow them to rent-to-own a drum. All I ask of any potential students is that they have access to their own drum and that they put as much energy into learning as I promise to put into teaching!

Please contact me at stupidroom@verizon.net for more information.

Hello All,
For those of you who do not already know I have split from To The Earth and am planning on starting to teach soon. I am currently on a search for studio space. Does anyone know of a local dance studio or something of the like that would be willing to let me use/rent one of their studios once a week? I am looking for something on Tuesday nights from 7-9. Any input you can give would be greatly appreciated!

I will be visiting the area sometime during the week of March 9 - March 13. (Weekends will be used for travel, likely.) I'll actually be in Colonial Heights, but possibly some time in Richmond proper.

I'm wondering if anyone has regular classes during the week, who doesn't mind if a "stranger" drops in one night only. Also where I would need to go, what time I would need to be there and what the cost may be.

I'm used to taking 2 classes a week, so going a week without sounds… weird. I'm looking for an actual class and not necessarily a private lesson, although if time and money are right, that may be doable.

I'm an intermediate-level dancer, not a beginner, and I have a basic understanding of ATS. I'm looking for any style, but I see ATS discussed here quite a bit.

Once my plans are a little more set I can give specific days when I'll be available.
Thanks

Hi everyone,

I posted this as an event but wanted to follow up!

omka presents: A weekend of Darkest Dance with Ariellah!

Join us for a weekend of Darkest Dance - with a little something for everyone regardless of your style, cabaret, tribal, or fusion.....

Ariellah performs and teaches belly dance all over the world. She has an extensive 12 year dance background that includes strict classical ballet training with the Royal Academy of Dance from London. She has studied and performed belly dance for the past seven years with Janine Ryle of Danse Mahgreb and as a founding member of The Indigo with Rachel Brice. Her style infuses many genres of belly dance, all with a modern dark flavour that is uniquely her own. She is featured on the first of its kind "Gothic BellyDance" DVD and has also released her first instructional DVD.

Friday, November 21st: An evening of The Darkest Dance
Romka presents the "Darkest Dance Spectacle" - An initmate, heart stopping
exploration into the darker side of dance featuring national & regional star performers, including Ariellah, Belladonna, Mavi, Asharah & more. This is a night of gothic, dark tribal fusion like you've never seen before...

Palace of Wonders
1210 H Street, NE
Washington, DC 20002
tickets $15.00
reserve your tickets at www.RomkaDance.com

Workshops with Ariellah

Saturday, November 22nd
9:30 - 12:30 Expressive arms, hands and movement
Learn the secrets to Ariellah's expressive arms. Her workshop is
devoted to strengthening and beautifying the belly dancers arm, hand,
belly and chest work, as well as fluidity of movement. Stretching,
strengthening and drilling techniques will be used to build a
repertoire of arm, hand and other movements. Arms and hands are key to
expressing one's music and love of dance. Students will be encouraged
to stylize their own arm movements after drilling the basics. Some
exercises are completed in groups to encourage use of arms and
personal stylization of arms.

1:30 - 4:30 Master Class with Ariellah: Conditioning, Layering, and Combinations
Prepare your body to do more than just drill and isolate, but to dance
and to layer basic belly dance movements. This workshop focuses on
strengthening and isolating core muscles in preparation for layering
movements, incorporating these layering drills into a combinations
learned in the workshop. This workshop, designed especially for
intermediate/advanced dancers will work through combinations to gain a
firmer grasp on the tribal and dark fusion genres of belly dance.
Oct. 19 Hafla at Beijing Restaurant in Fredericksburg

More details to come, but we have confirmed this date with the owners.

This event is sponsored by Bellies for Breasts to benefit the Breast Cancer Network of Strength (formerly Y-ME).

There will be a buffet included in the admission price (which is still TBD) as well as a cash bar. And door prizes!

As usual, this is not a "performance" hafla. Still, if anyone has a specific piece (or more than one) in mind to share, let us know. We want to balance the open dancing with some "performances", and non-dancers like to be entertained. :)

And please drag musicians along!

Richmond Peace Festival Fundraiser, Saturday, August 16, 2008, at The Camel

I have been asked to pass this along to the Tribe community.

Richmond Peace Festival Fundraiser, Saturday, August 16, 2008, at The Camel

The 5th annual Family Peace Festival will be on September 21, 2008. The festival itself celebrates the diversity of many religions & cultures in the belief that a greater understanding of these things can eradicate ignorance, racism and the perpetuation of stereotypes and rumors. Many faith-based organizations, cultural groups, non-profits and more will be represented through vendors' tables, food, stage performances & an inter-faith worship service. For more info, go to www.familypeacefestival.org .

It takes a lot of money to stage the festival every year. There will be a FUNDRAISING EVENT featuring live international musical and dance entertainment (including belly dancing and Balkan and Turkish folk music from members of BALKANIZE!) at The Camel from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday, August 16. Details will be posted as they are made available to me.

Thanks.

Dancers and Drummers:
There are still a few spots left for tomorrow's workshops. Here's some more information, we've been hard at work to ensure you will have the best time possible:

**Special: We've added a tahitian drumming class, taught by Chip from Charlottesville, from 3:30-5 on Sunday - an insane bargain at $7!
Respond to chip@brss.com or 434-989-3995 - class size is super-limited for this one!

From Bastet,
If you are worried about not having fans, Bastet will have plenty for sale and even some for people to borrow, if need be!

Speaking of for sale, check out this list of our fantastic vendors:

Then AFTER the workshops, everyone (dancers, drummers, and spectators alike) is invited to join PURE Richmond for a very special event:

July 20 is being celebrated by PURE groups around the world as the anniversary of the organization. In each city, PURE troupes will take to the streets, walking and dancing to share our art with the community and also to focus our own minds and spirits on peace and goodwill. PURE Richmond invites all of the workshop participants to join us as we walk to the river.

We will begin with a moving meditation inside Artworks to honor our audience and each other and to prepare ourselves emotionally and physically for our walk. The members of PURE Richmond and any who would like to join us will then walk in a dancing line to the river and a short distance down the canal path, stopping twice to dance on the way. The total length of the walk is approximately one-quarter mile.

PURE Richmond is made up of members with a variety of backgrounds. We focus on creating a sense of peace and well-being, both for ourselves and for our audience, and we seek to help make the world a better place by spreading goodwill throughout our community.

The flyer is posted in the pictures on this Tribe, if anyone needs more information! See you there. :)

See you soon!!!

Naima

Saturday:

“Classical Egyptian Technique and Combinations” - Take your dancing to the next level with challenging hip technique that will enhance your performance. Focusing on personal style and music interpretation, each dancer will bring out their “dance personality” and put it to use in each dance combination. Special attention to body language and facial expression will take place in this unique class, with exercises to help dancers unleash new ways of interpreting the music.

"Reaching New Heights” - Bozenka will give each student specialized attention on transitions, execution of movement, aesthetics, and musicality (what Bozenka likes to refer to as (T.E.A.M.). To take your dancing to a higher level, awareness of all these elements is essential. Let Bozenka guide you through exercises (dance combinations) that will help you project better posture, strengthen your articulation of movements and put a spark into every performance. This challenging class will also incorporate improvisation to unleash self-expression and will focus on musicality.

Sunday:

“Latin/Arabic Fusion Combinations By Bozenka” - Learn how to put your Salsa, Cha-Cha and more into your belly dancing. This moderately paced class will teach you simple and flavorful combinations to incorporate a Latin dance flare into your own dance routine.

“Facial Expressions and Body Language” - This is one of Bozenka’s most popular workshops among dancers who are at an advanced level but is encouraged for dancers of all levels. This workshop focuses on the interpretation between Dancer and Music as well as the communication between Dancer and Audience. Bozenka uses creative methods to encourage dancers to interpret the feelings caused by the music and to learn to convey those feelings to the audience. Dancers learn how appropriate body language and using facial expressions take their performance to a higher level. This workshop is recommended for groups of less than 50 participants.

Double Fan Fusion Dancing by Bastet - SAVE THE DATE

To The Earth is hosting Bastet from Albuquerque, NM to come teach a DOUBLE fan workshop on July 20th! We'd love for you all to join us.

Here's a message from Bastet (Profile: http://people.tribe.net/05d47da8-de03-4902-86de-30e64057a31c):

"Hello all,
As part of the workshop, I am offering a pre-order for fans. Due to my insanely busy schedule this summer, I can only hold pre-orders until May 18th, though I will order extras (don't worry!). The instructions are posted below and on my tribe: Bastet Fusion Fan Dancing. Just in case you're wondering what my double fan technique looks like, here's a video....enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Uo5VthVLQY

For your dancing delight, I've found many options for you to choose from to order through me:

$20/pair (Right Handed ONLY)
-----Black-Staved Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...14be6d22e1
-----Dragon and/or Phoenix Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...075cc8857f
$20/pair (Left and Right Handed Fans)
----Fade Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...db52950fe9
$15/pair (Right Hand ONLY)
----Red or Black Dance Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...c3de1269ca
$12/pair (Left and Right Handed Fans)
----Green Peacock: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...09af94ee34
----Blue Peacock: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...379ab53f3b
----Red Dance Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...3f9c748564

*I offer these options because I know I can save you money on them by buying (and shipping) in bulk and either own or have used all of these and found them to be acceptable or good for the price. However, my current favorite fans (and the ones you see in many of my pictures) are from waydragon.stores.yahoo.net/soli...html. I just called them, and they only have orange and green in stock right now. Unfortunately, I cannot save you any money by buying in bulk (at least, through my estimation). So, if you're interested, buy directly from them! There are also many vendors on ebay (though I think you'll pay about the same or more with shipping).

How to Order: Please send a paypal payment for the total to eve6570@hotmail.com with the name of the fan and color preference. I will be taking pre-orders until May 18th to guarantee color/style preferences. I will order extras of fans I feel will sell at the workshops. ONLY order fans if you are attending the Richmond VA workshop as you will receive them at the workshop. If fewer than 5 orders are made from any one vendor (I am ordering from several companies), I reserve the right to cancel those orders--you will be notified if this happens and your money refunded or used as a credit towards another pair of fans.

**If you cannot afford a set of fans and are attending my workshop, I will have a limited number of fans available to borrow. Please pm or e-mail me at bastetfusion@gmail.com to reserve a pair to borrow.

***If you're still reading at this point....here's my opinion on some of these fans: The loudest fans are the "Black-Staved Fans" and the "Dragon and/or Phoenix Fans", the easiest to handle are the ones from waydragon.com (the ones you'd have to order), but any of the left and right handed fans have a wonderful ease of use, the most graceful ones are probably the "red dance fans," but the fade fans look the best on stage. If you're buying your own, please don't buy the metal martial arts fans. I have some. They are heavy, beautiful, and dangerous. If you fling them across the room by accident, you could seriously hurt someone. Also, they heavy enough that you could injure your wrist doing some of the movements that will be taught. Also, if you own fan veils, please don't use them for this workshop. Many of the movements you will learn MUST be modified in order to use fan veils. The movements and combos you will learn really focus on using the fan as a fan. Fan veils are, in my opinion, very different props.

Whew!

WHAT THE F**K!!! - INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL & FUNDRAISER

Ok, here it goes. I don't know what's going on in the minds of other people, but their intentions have a way of flooring me everytime. I think I am a little to Optimistic and have a very good outlook on life.....or maybe I live in the world of wishful thinking. Whatever it may be, nothing prepares me for s**t that comes out of people's mouths.

Here it goes:

I made an agreement with a local resturant to assist them with a fund raiser for Autism and the International Food Festival. Well, today I had to break my foot off in her a**

Here is the e-mail I sent to her:

Hello Shahida

I want to let you know how disturbing your comment was last night as well as your behavior toward me and my dancers. I also am not the fool you make me out to be. Your comment about standing at the side of the street and getting customers to your establishment indicates your lack of respect for me and my fellow performers. I am not sure what you think "bellydance" is....or what you believe about those who are performers, but I will not stand by and not speak up for this community. Your comment was deplorable.

You also lied to me on several occasions and certainly is not a woman of her word. As of today, I and my dancers will no longer perform at your establishment. I have forwarded this information to the entire Richmond Bellydance Community and if any of them are interested in performing.....it is up to them to do so. I respect the ladies in this community.....and they spend hundreds of dollars and their time in study, lessons, and costumes to represent their expression of this beautiful dance form. What you are trying to do is not only insulting, but represent the person you are.

Your advertisement of an International Food Festival and Fundraiser for Autism was a complete and utter lie and you will be reported to the Autism Foundation today by one of the dancers who is on the National Foundation of Autism Committee. This community of dancers are not a bunch of low lives and hookers. If you ever tell another dancer to stand out on the street again, I hope they tell me and then I will take this to the "next" level.

BatSheva

Intentions are very powerful! Negative intentions are often revealed to those who are positive.

The bra will fit a 34 C. The bra cups are covered in a pink colored fabric with pink bugle beads sewn into the fabric. The bra is trimmed in a gold sequin gimp trim. The side panels are covered in a pink color velvet fabric(as well as the neck straps I would like to add) The side panels have D rings attach to the ends to add closure for the bra. The is bra is lined and very sturdy will hold it's shape.

The belt is cover in the same pink beaded fabric and gold trim as the bra cups. . The belt is one piece and is a tie front as if it were a hip sash . The belt is 35 inches long. The belt will fit a small to medium . the belt can be sized down before I send it if you would like it smaller. The fringe is made from pink colored seed beads like on the bra and is about 5 3/4 inches long.
HERE WE GO AGAIN!!! UGH!!! MORE DRAMA!!!

Here we go again! Things must be going to smooth. People are getting bored again. I got a call yesterday about a rumor pitting me against another bellydance teacher.

My caller was shocked and so am I!!! She was told a made-up story about me stealing students. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! Of course it is a lie. Some women hate to see peace amoung professionals. Clearly I have my students, you have yours. The universe has more than enough for everyone. Noone need to steal from anyone. The reality of everyone being at peace in our community is obviously too much for C. to take.

LADIES, I am too mature for this HIGH SCHOOL GIRL DRAMA.

Ignore as I have. Give her no power. I as always, I wish you love, light, and complete happiness.

Your sister in dance :-)

Looking for a replacement drummer

I received an email from Vernon "Rhythm Genie" of California yesterday. He is unable to attend the BOCA fest and is looking for a replacement drum instructor for the weekend.

Here are the details if anyone is interested.

Hi Chandani,

...someone on the East Coast* who'd be interested & available to teach some Middle Eastern drumming for the BOCAFest event this weekend? I've had to cancel because of a serious medical condition that precludes me from flying for awhile ~ I'm grounded!

Any contacts would be greatly appreciated. It's a paid gig featuring Morocco, Tarik, and quite a few others. Info online here:
http://www. bellydancersofcolor. com/

Thanks for any info you can provide.

~Vern

*Actually, they don't have to be on, or from the East Coast, but that's probably preferred as far as costs & logistics ;-)
We need a replacement right away.

Here is the contact info:

Then please pass on these links & e-mail addresses.
http://www. bellydancersofcolor. com/

my workshop:

Thank you most kindly!
~Vern

I don't have a phone number as of yet, maybe by sometime tomorrow a.m.

Lynchburg Hafla 2008

Okay Ladies it is that time of year again. Lynchburg Tribal is proud to present their 2nd annual Lynchburg Hafla. With the great success we had last year we are hoping to present another wonderful event. This year we are planning on having a workshop that morning and afternoon followed by the Hafla. The event is schedule for September 27, 2008.

So if you think you or your troupe would be interested in participating in the workshop, Hafla, or both please send me your contact information (name, address, phone number, email) to eeimp1@gmail.com. If you are part of a troupe I only need one contact person per troupe.

We are planning on having the participates packages together by June 1. These packages will have time, location and cost of the workshop, who is teaching it, the contents of the workshop, and the deadlines for the fee. The packages will also have Hafla information such as start time, when the venue will open up to the dancers, and of course where the after party will be.

I look forward to hearing from everyone.

November 15th for the workshop. Time a location tba

Shakra's Transfusion Dance and Choreography Workshop!

Come sweat and stomp with Shakra! This high energy and cardiovascular
workshop will give you a crash course to Transfusion Dance. We’ll be
focusing on the Afro-Industrial fusion side of Shakra’s style, which is
heavily influenced by African dance, but incorporates other high energy
movements from donor styles such as Bhangera, Hip Hop, Modern, and
Bellydance. This side of Transfusion Dance will focus on bringing power
and extension into your movements and embrace the need for speed when
working with powerful and fast beats.

Past dance knowledge will help, but is not necessary."

I finally have the TJ7 photos posted. I originally had over 200, but I culled them down to 161. For that reason, I refuse to load them to Tribe one at a time. I have posted them on my flickr account. http://flickr.com/photos/11499357@N07/sets/72157605038460479/
I encourage everyone to look and re-live the evening!
Rules for photo usage...
Only the dancers/musicians in each of the photos may have use of these photos. I also ask that you contact me before using any of these photos for any reason. I would rather send you larger retouched files that actually look good. I also request that you give me photo credit if you use any of these photos for anything professional.
Thanks!

To The Earth helped with our fundraising hafla, and we luv 'em!

dcwalk.y-me.org/site/PageServer

Out of the "Clubs and Organizations" our team, Bellies for Breasts, is in a *very* close second. All we need is a little help to catch up, and we're sure to come out first in our category!! :)

Our team of six belly dance students has really worked hard to raise money for Y-ME. And while it's fun perform for the walk participants and to engage in a little friendly competition as we read about how the other teams are doing, we know that there are women, their families, and their friends who face the reality of breast cancer every day. As dancers, we are so fortunate to have our health and to be able to share the joy of Middle Eastern music and dance. So fundraising for Y-ME is fun for us, but we take it seriously, and we couldn't do it without your support.

We are also so grateful for our dance teachers who make it possible for us to spread the love and joy of belly dance on Mother's Day.

And if you're so inclined, you can go here to donate main.y-me.org/goto/Rajni; if you want to donate to the team in general, there's a link to that there as well. :)

Thanks everyone!

Hi All!

Is anybody going to the Fifi workshops in Dallas in April? I am looking for someone to share a room. You must come if you can manage it; it will be a ton of fun! Yasmin, my instructor in DC, is performing in one of the shows! She's just amazing. (Of course Fifi will be good too.)

Oh, I have to go now! I have cats misbehaving here!!! Darn cats!

Wow, what a great workshop!

Really loved the format. Got to drill moves, so they will stick, then put them in combos I can use, as well as tweak and use.

Sorry I missed the show, but had to work today. Ok, back to the tax return grind.
Midlothian, VA

Sunday April 6, 4-7 PM
Join us for an open drum circle!

The focus is on Belly dance/Tribal style drumming, but all types of hand drums and drumming styles are welcome. Dancing is encouraged! You do not need to be experienced to join in the fun. If you are a beginner, show up promptly at 4:00 PM and we will allow some time for the more experienced to share their knowledge and encouragement. If you are an accomplished drummer and have percussion instruments to share, please bring them! Although we believe that sharing the energy of dancing and drumming is in itself a spiritual experience, this is NOT a religious ritual.

A $5 donation is requested to cover expenses of the site! Bring your own (non-alcoholic) beverages. We encourage sharing of snacks in the lobby area, especially finger foods. There are several choices in the immediate area for folks who want to gather afterwards for food, drink and socializing. There is plenty of parking.
The yoga room is a large, open room with padded carpeting. There is a large lobby area with a couch, chairs and tables. There are many cushions and bolsters and a limited number of folding chairs. You might want to bring your own folding chair if you would find it physically challenging to stand or sit on cushions for long periods of time. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. There are rest rooms and a changing area. No food or drinks are allowed in the yoga room. Please remove your shoes in the lobby.

Ok, so you bought a piece of PVC or wooden dowel from the hardware store for your Saidi cane number. It is cut to length, very affordable, but, unfortunately not pretty. How do you decorate it to match your costume?

I used my decorative hula-hoop tape!

Here's where to order hula-hoop tape. My favorites are gaffer tape and metallic tape.

Any other ideas?

Dance & Drum in central VA?

Several years ago, I hosted a dance and drum on Sundays in Powhatan County, Virginia. I stopped for a variety of reasons and am now interested in starting up again. I want to know if there is enough interest to do this at my yoga school, which would allow for a much larger, empty room than at my house. I do both SCA and modern raqs. The purpose is to share and grow as a community. There would be no formal instruction, but in the past folks have been great about helping beginners.

They are willing to let us use the space on Sundays 3-5PM for a $5 a head optional donation. There is no alcohol allowed, but snacks may be had in the lobby/waiting room. The main class room is carpeted and plenty large enough. There are toilets and a small space to change clothes in.

This would be at Healthy Life Yoga on Rt 60 in the Sycamore Square shopping center zipcode 23113. This location is a little more than an hour from Charlottesville, and on the outskirts of Richmond, near rt 60 and rt 288.

The main advantage to this location is the size of the room, it's a quiet shopping center, lots of parking. However, you can't have a cookout afterwards as you can at my place.

Anybody interested? Let me know and I will try to schedule one Sunday a month.

Please forward this message to friends, family, etc...:

Bellies for Breasts, a team of Middle Eastern dance students who support the Y-ME Walk to Empower, will be hosting a hafla ("party") on Sunday, March 16 from 3 to 6 PM at Beijing Restaurant on Rt. 3 in Fredericksburg (5030 Plank Rd Fredericksburg, VA 22407
(540) 785-0838).

Tickets will be $10 in advance ($12 at the door, as space allows) and will benefit Y-ME (www.y-me.org). Admission includes an "all you care to eat" buffet. There will be open dancing, drumming, raffles and door prizes as well as a cash bar. Contact Rajni / Jen if you need tickets!

If you want to share your dancing, just let me know and we'll allot a time for you. Drummers and musicians are welcome as well. And rumor has it that we'll have a special guest hosting a drum workshop to kick off the hafla! Chip from Ch'ville has offered to teach dumbek basics to those who are interested -- more details about that part soon!.

Hey guys,

I really want to nominate Dana Beaufait for the Zaghareet's best kept secret award. She's the inventor of bellydance veil poi (voi), a phenomenal dancer, choreographer, teacher, and she has her own dvd. All of this at the age of 21! I truly think she deserves this award. I'd appreciate if you'd take the time to vote for her. Also, check out her myspace page if you aren't familiar with her work.

The Phoenician -New local Lebanese Restaurant!!! 4401 W Broad st

There is a new Lebanese restaurant debuting on West Broad Street called "The Phoenician". The sign and the facade have already been changed at 4401 West Broad Street, formerly La Casita Mexican Restaurant. Outside it doesnt look like much but inside the decorations are very cool-very fantasy Moroccan but not tacky. There are huge middle eastern lamps hung all over the place with fabric banners that attach to them and silk pillows that line the seats at the larger tables. They play ethnic music while you eat (not live of course), and the red burgandy and gold walls give everything a warm bellydance oasis feel. Okay so enough of that, the food is AMAZING I've never had such a great kabob and my boyfriend loved his falafel. They give you pita and two kinds of hummus/olives before your meal, that alone was worth going for.
For two at lunch its around $17.00 without dessert!!
Two for dinner with all the workings including dessert and starters -er more like $60.00.
Not a lot of people have heard about them, and they're worried locals wont go for the whole Lebanese cultural food thing-so go try em out!!

Drumming & Dancing at Art6 Gallery, First Friday, April

Hello, all. I'm organizing a VERY laid back, informal belly dance drum-and-dance party for April's First Friday at Art6 Gallery. Janine Turner, a beginner belly dancer and local artist, is exhibiting a beautiful collection of belly dance photographs there, and she thought it would be very cool to have some drumming and dancing for the occasion; I'm picturing a small Middle Eastern drum circle (NOT 27 thundering djembes!) and dancers doing what they want and when they want to. Dancers can dance to Middle Eastern rhythms laid down by live percussionists or to recorded music. Troupes, duets, individuals, choregraphies, free improv, Cabaret, Tribal Fusion, Goth, ATS, ANYTHING goes!

Anybody interested? Please contact me if you would like to perform. I'll have more detailed logistical info later; right now I'm just letting people know as early as I can. Thanks.

About Issam Houshan

The union of music and movement is the essence of dance. The union of a musician and a dancer to create a seamless artistic expression is the ultimate manifestation of such a union. Issam Houshan does exactly that. Call him the “Wassan Pharaoun,” “King of the Drum,” or “Mr. Magic Fingers” and you only tell the half of it. His connection to the dancer is the essence of his magic, a merging of egos serving a mutual and identical goal. Issam is now recognized as the ultimate master of this art. An international music star, his past credits include touring with Sting in 2000, performing at the Grammys on the hit single Desert Rose, as well as performing and recording with countless Arab stars. In addition, he has toured with the Mile Copeland-produced Bellydance Superstars, the world’s premiere professional touring bellydancer performance group since 2003, with whom he has appeared in over 1000 shows in 16 countries over the past three years.

A highly accomplished percussionist on assorted Arab hand drums, Issam was formally trained at the Damascus Academy of Music and is the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arab drum master Mahmood Salahadeen. An accomplished and sought-after music instructor, he taught at the Damascus Music Institute for nine years and continues to teach workshops and private lessons around the world. Unequaled in his field, Issam is known by fellow Syrian musicians as the Wassan Pharaoun (Pharaoh of Rhythm) and his al assaben al Sahriha (magic fingers) are currently insured for 10 million dollars (1 million each).

His drum solos with the Bellydance Superstars are major features of each show, as captured in the films American Bellydancer, Solos from Monte Carlo, Bellydance Superstars, 30 Days to Vegas, Behind the Shimmy, and the instructional DVD The Art of the Drum Solo. His CD releases include his own Wassan Pharaoun, The Dancing Drum and Tabel Ya Issam, as well as percussion on the Galactic Caravan albums.

New Tribe: Lynchburg Tribal

tribes.tribe.net/lynchburg_tribal

Hi folks!
I wanted to spread the news that Lynchburg Tribal finally got around to starting it's own tribe. Lynchburg Tribal is a non-profit group dedicated to supporting Bellydance in Central Virginia. Last year we hosted a Hafla that drew an audience of over 250 people, and then we turned folks away at the door. With dancers from all over the state, we felt it was a success. We want to do more!!!

We aim to host more of our own events and to help support other area events, either through attendance, wo/manpower, or financially.

So, I hope you'll come on over to swell the Tribe!

Blessings and shimmies,
Nancy
