Hi all!
I made this quick (and very very very simple) photo tutorial on how to cover a bra for a costume. Thought it might help some folks out here, too. The photos aren't so great as my home lighting is odd, but I think the point gets across. I'll be adding a few more photos in a bit to show how the final decorated bra turned out, but so far you can at least get the entire process of the step-by-step. if you all like it, i'd be happy to do some more soon (like how to do a cabaret mermaid skirt, how to make a panel skirt, etc). I know the resources are online already, but I find the actual photos help me a lot too.

ps - yes, this is SO for a pastel and furry tribal fusion costume. i confess. sue me. ha!

Re: Covering a Bra: A Costume Tutorial
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 11:13 PMthis is a great tutorial - i have also done something slightly different - particularly with black bras - if you have a bra with a strap that is material before it joins onto an elastic bit with a ring- if you take off the elastic bits- i have found that the material bits can be joined to just one of the rings- and it makes a perfect halter neck fitting!!
also i adapted the back of one bra using a crushed velvet, because i didn't want to cover the front - i made extra long ties that worked with the stretch of the back of the bra, and then i could knot it at the back - it really worked to offer a lot of support! - i'm quite a top heavy gal!! -

Re: Covering a Bra: A Costume Tutorial
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 8:30 AMI have a question-when you are sewing the stretchy bra sides to the stiff material, do you stretch it out, or do you just sew it unstretched on there? After that what hooks the bra together-the original bra hooks, or do you put in some on the stiff material? Sorry for the dumb question-this has been my biggest challenge. I usually just cut the stretchy sides off, and sew together 2 pieces of stiff material, sew those to the bra, and then cover them....Any thoughts on this technique? -

Re: Covering a Bra: A Costume Tutorial
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 10:05 AMSew the stiff material to the unstretched fabric -- but make sure you are using a bra that fits you well without the stretch first. The reason why you eliminate the stretch in the bra (both the straps & the band) is so that you don't jiggle all over the place when you dance.
As for the closures, you can either sew the pretty fabric all the way up to the original closures & use them to close the bra. Or, what I prefer to do so that the bra is completely covered in the pretty fabric, is cut off the hooks & eyes that came on the bra -- but remember to add that length back in when you're sewing the stiff fabric & the pretty fabric on, or your bra back will be too short/tight. Then once it's completely covered, I add my own set of hooks & eyes (can usually be found in any fabric store) to the bra. What's nice about this option is that instead of using bra closures, I usually use flat pant/skirt hooks & eyes which (a) lay more nicely in my opinion, and (b) hold my well-endowed girls in more securely.

Re: Covering a Bra: A Costume Tutorial
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 2:45 PMIt's never a dumb question! I typically do *not* stretch the sides as the elastic can give out. So, yup, I sew it on unstretched. Also, a note, I always use the stiffer fabric (it's the white fabric that I sewed on first in the tutorial) and make it a little longer than the actual side strap. Then, I cover this with fabric and it is more than enough to hook and wear.
As for the hooks, I use heavy duty pant hooks. I cover the original hooks (or just cut them off) with fabric and hand-sew on 2-3 heavy duty hooks. They hook together really well and hold fast.
As for your technique of cutting off the stretchy sides, it would depend on the look you're going for. I've found that just covering over them (and using them for a base for my stiffer fabric) means I can cover a bra super-quickly. I've done a few cabaret costumes where I've made the sides different (with cut-outs and whatnot) but still used a bit of the original fabric as a base. If you cut it all off, I think it would be a lot more time consuming to sew more on to the bra, but if it works for you go for it!

I've just added an alternative to the straps. It's kind of a quickie, but to at least show how it's done check out the link here:
