Hello. I am new to Tribe as well as to this group. I am looking for guidance with a project.
I have bought an "Indian" skirt (tie-died with shisha mirrors) that was too small (I knew it was too small going in as it measured 35-1/2 inches in the waist), but I could not resist the colors. I decided that I could make what I call a 2-panel skirt out of it (as my full-hip measurement is 54 inches, waist is 43). I have also found the name to be a Scant Skirt. I plan to fill in the "gaps" with a chiffon-type material. My main question is how big do I cut the front panel? The easy way would be to do 1/2 front panel and 1/2 back panel, but I am not sure it would look right. I have seen pictures/found text where the skirt is done 1/4 to 3/4s, 1/3 to 2/3s and also 1/4 to 1/2. I am not doing a one-color skirt. The Indian skirt is a burnt persimmon (or pumpkin) color on the top and is purple on the bottom. The chiffon material I have chose is an olive with brown stripes. I know this sounds a little odd, but the colors go together nice. With the color sceme in mind, how I cut the panels will be obvious. Should my chiffon filled gaps be more in the front or equal on the sides? What suggestions do you have?

Re: 2-Panel or Scant Skirt
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 4:30 AMI have done this with a skirt that I loved but was way too small for me. I did 1/2 front and 1/2 back. I did not fill in the gaps, rather I just attached elastic at the sides. That way, I can wear it over other skirts or pants to vary the look. -

Re: 2-Panel or Scant Skirt
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 1:33 PMI was thinking of making the gap filling removable, so I could wear it with or without pants. I was just going to put everything on a drawstring of sorts. I also have a similar skirt that needs adjusting as well and how the current one goes will determine what I will try with the other one.
Did you cut your skirt with straight sides or angular sides. My skirt is much smaller at the waist than at the hem -- sort of pie shaped. That would be another concern that I did not think of before. Oooh, you're good.....got me thinking now!

Re: 2-Panel or Scant Skirt
Sun, June 22, 2008 - 10:59 AMIt all depends on how much you want showing and the ease of movement you have with the skirt. If you want it more modest in the back, but skantier in the front I would do 2/3rds for the back and 1/3rd for the front with the chiffon basically covering your legs. Since it sounds like your "Indian" Skirt panels would be triangular I would make the chiffon panels also triangular.
If you have the time and resources you should do a mock up first with cruddier fabric to get the panels the proper size/ ratio for your body.
