Hello. I am new to Tribe as well as to this group. I am looking for guidance with a project.

I have bought an "Indian" skirt (tie-died with shisha mirrors) that was too small (I knew it was too small going in as it measured 35-1/2 inches in the waist), but I could not resist the colors. I decided that I could make what I call a 2-panel skirt out of it (as my full-hip measurement is 54 inches, waist is 43). I have also found the name to be a Scant Skirt. I plan to fill in the "gaps" with a chiffon-type material. My main question is how big do I cut the front panel? The easy way would be to do 1/2 front panel and 1/2 back panel, but I am not sure it would look right. I have seen pictures/found text where the skirt is done 1/4 to 3/4s, 1/3 to 2/3s and also 1/4 to 1/2. I am not doing a one-color skirt. The Indian skirt is a burnt persimmon (or pumpkin) color on the top and is purple on the bottom. The chiffon material I have chose is an olive with brown stripes. I know this sounds a little odd, but the colors go together nice. With the color sceme in mind, how I cut the panels will be obvious. Should my chiffon filled gaps be more in the front or equal on the sides? What suggestions do you have?

Ever have a gig or a performance where you need a particular color of skirt? But, well, if you're like me you always seem to need what you don't have and don't realize it until the last minute. Last night, I needed either a white or silver skirt for two different costumes. It was a last-minute sort of need, and not one I could rectify with ebay ;) So, in sheer desparation, I headed into a thrift store, picked up a ball skirt, and transformed it into a circle skirt.

It worked quite well! I honestly had never thought of doing this until when the need arose so, if you've never considered re-purposing an old full skirt or prom dress, I can tell you it works great!

I made a tutorial of it (hope you all like it ;) ) because I wanted to remember how the heck I did this. It's super simple, and quick, and the results were great (helllloooo not having to hem the skirt or let it hang!):

The tutorial is here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mishakitty/sets/72157605119138444/
I'll post photos of how it looks on asap, but I wore it last night for a gig and got lots of compliments!

PS - I confess that I love making these tutorial thingys. Hope I don't annoy all of you by posting them!

I made this quick (and very very very simple) photo tutorial on how to cover a bra for a costume. Thought it might help some folks out here, too. The photos aren't so great as my home lighting is odd, but I think the point gets across. I'll be adding a few more photos in a bit to show how the final decorated bra turned out, but so far you can at least get the entire process of the step-by-step. if you all like it, i'd be happy to do some more soon (like how to do a cabaret mermaid skirt, how to make a panel skirt, etc). I know the resources are online already, but I find the actual photos help me a lot too.

So I found a site called Tribal Bazaar (I think someone on tribe mentioned them) they have some really cute lace cholis that Im interested in and I was wondering if anyone has done business with them. They said delivery takes like 5-10 days, and that their sizes tend to run larger. If anyone has ordered from them: about how long did delivery take? How was the fit? and above all is it a safe site to order from?

Sorry for all the questions but Im really paranoid about ordering off the internet, I had a really bad experience when ordering for my recital last year so any and all info would be helpful. Thanks!!

Website has been given a Facelift! things have been moved, added and removed from all over the place! Working on getting a darker fusion of styles in great fabrics and at great prices! Wanting to cater to the gothic/pirate/fusion goddess in all of us!

I have removed "basic" harem type pants, only offering my saloon pantaloons for now.
I cannot compete with sweatshop labor in dying processes so I have taken the option for custom dyes from my 25 yard skirt page. I may do one or two every once in a while, but alas, it isnt worth my sanity for items to not come out the way that I wanted them to, and to not be able to give my customers the highest in customer service in this aspect.

I Have perfected my corset underbust vest! I will be working on a "full" corset style, but for now, I have my hands full with these. I will have 4 "regular" sizes Small, medium, large and x-large (please see sizing on my website).
I will be offering pre-made fun fabric corset vests on my Etsy.com website creationsbyangelia.etsy.com but that will be in the next week or so, so that I have time to get some sewing done!

I am also going to be offering some premade pantaloons! will be adding some fun touches to them, in fun colors!

Ghawazee coats have been revamped, and look for new pictures of my new design in the next week or so, as I am still sewing it! (I've been busy!!)
There will be sheer and opaque coats offered!

I am currently working on a design for a ghawazee type top that has ties in the front, to be worn UNDER a vest or bra! perfect for showing a bit of that belly, or covering it up!

Mesh body covers are still available! I have even more access to mesh fabrics now! so many fun colors!

Also will be adding some "shrug" type tops, ones that just cover the arms and back, with a little at the front of the arm to keep it from being tooo strange looking. I have some great fabrics in stock for these! quite excited about them!

So... Lots of new things! Lots of fun Ideas!

PLEASE, remember that I can do almost anything in any size for anyone! If you see it, and cant find it in your size, I can most likely do it for you! I enjoy the challenge!!!

Blessings!

Hello all, please tell me if this is my imagination. First off, I certainly hope no one is offended as I'm a pink fiend myself...

The other night I went to a restaurant because they had belly dancers. The restaurant was fairly well lit with incandescent lights...the kind that isn't very flattering. So, I'm not sure whether what I was seeing was my poor eyes or the lighting.

One dancer was wearing a lavender evening type dress. The lavender showed up OK but it seemed to make her complexion very pale. Another dancer was wearing a darker rose chiffon skirt with pale pink bra and belt fringed with what I thought were just silver beads. When she got really close I could see the bra and belt also had the pink beads but they seemed to disappear from the distance.

I'm wondering...for artificially lit or otherwise dark places, is it generally better to use deep colors? They would show up better, yes? Are there any lighting conditions in which it would be ok to wear pastels?

Thanks much,

“How to make Egyptian dressmakers starve by ordering & returning a belly dance costume”

Great place to order from, if you don’t inquire as to when your costume will be delivered, or need to make an exchange. Or expect them to do much to follow through... Yup.. that’s “good customer service”

http://www.isisexchange.com/

Isis Exchange’s BBB Report: http://www.bbbsoutheastflorida.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=11008931

----------Back Story------------------------------------------------

My troupe pitched in to buy me a nice, professional styled costume as a way to thank me for all of the work I put into getting our troupe up and running.

Being a non-standard portioned person (minimal chest, broad hips, plus a jiggly mid section), I knew that I would need to order a custom costume to have a matching bra & belt. I found a beautiful and unique costume at Isis Exchange and I was sooo happy to have discovered a company that not only offered a unique custom made costume, but a reasonable price. Without much hesitation, I ordered from them in early December ‘07.

In Jan ‘08, I received my costume- only to discover, that indeed the costume was beautiful, but by no means made to my exact measurements (as promised by Isis Exchange). The single piece gown’s torso was incredibly long– if the thigh slit sat where it was supposed to, then the hard cupped breast forms came to just under my chin! If I put the boobs where they are meant to go, the thigh slit was just above my knee. This was not a costume I could dance in! Not to mention that the zipper popped, and there were several highly visible white tailor paint markings across the bodice (that I could not easily remove). Sadly, I had to return this gown and exchange it for something more safe (ie not incur the length problem) and that could be produced in a shorter time frame for my March show. Because all exchanges are not offered a refund, but a 75% credit to be used at the store, I was stuck re-ordering another costume.

I spoke with Mou, the production manager, and he was very friendly and seemed to understand my dilemma. He helped me select another costume, and I was feeling pretty good about the whole thing, tho’ more than a little nervous about the time frame. He told me that my order would be submitted right away.

Through out the rest of Jan, I had not received a invoice or purchase order, so I emailed the company, and I received an invoice on Feb 12, 2008. I have honestly come to believe that my order was not even submitted until I contacted the company!!! Anyway this invoice had an expected date of March 5. Sweet! 10 days before my performance! I was very excited.

----------Here’s where it gets more dramatic-------------

March 10— No costume. I called the company, and managed to speak with Billy. I explained my concerns to him. I was informed that my costume would arrive early next week (two days too late for my performance), I asked if was joking, and said that this is unacceptable. He told me he would look into and call me back by the end of the day.

March 11- Getting more worried, I called Isis Exchange. No answer. I left a message. I called back an hour later, this I time I spoke with a woman who assured me that she would look into the matter.

No response 2 hours later, I called again, and spoke with Billy yet again. He wanted to know what was wrong with the original costume. I explained the fit problem, and I was informed that Isis Exchange employs a dressmaker who is 55 years old, near retirement, and that at least 8-10 costumes recently have been returned to fit problems!! I was shocked! Wow! 8-10 people have been through what I am going through? Have they gotten an apology, unlike myself? Billy again assured me that he would call me back, after he spoke with his production manager. I asked when I could expect to hear back from him, he did not provide an answer, so I informed him that I wanted to hear back from him within 15-30 minutes.

The afternoon passed, and I had no contact from them. So I called again (If you ever need to call Isis Exchange, expect to not have the phone answered at any time in your ordering experience until you call them at least 10 times– seriously). During this time, I left two messages- one apologizing for my earlier shortness and I provided two solutions for Isis Exchange... the first being that my costume is overnighted from Egypt to me, at no additional shipping charge, the second the costume arrives late with a refund. My second message was a request to get the promised call back.

Finally my phone rings, and it’s Billy– he begins by saying “you called me 20 times- I had to step out of the office. Our internet is down. I’m working off a laptop, I have to go outside to find a wireless internet connection.” I offered to forward all of the emails I had from Isis Exchage so he could access my records. I was now informed that my costume was still in production, that there was no way I could have in time for my show. I was also told that my costume should have fit, as the hips stretch to 54" (and that folks is why the zipper popped!). I am embarrassed to say, but I not so kindly expressed my disappointment. Our phone conversation ends with him saying that he will contact his production manager (Mou) and that only Mou has the authority to issue refunds.

Three hours later- I hear from Mou. Mou wanted to know what was wrong my original costume. I explained to him the details. He then asked what I wanted from them. I repeated my two options for them. I was told, and I had to repeat this back to him twice out of disbelief- he offered to send me my original ill-fitting costume, or to send my the second costume as soon as it came (early next week). There was no way my costume would be shipped any sooner. Again, I explained my disappointment to him. I was then asked again what I wanted, “I said an apology would go along way right now.” He then shouted at me, and said that I was being a very difficult customer– “that there was no way of pleasing me, that he had already lost a significant amount of money a costume that was perfectly fine and fit me, that he had no desire to do business with me, and that people in Egypt were starving” (no I am not kidding here) because of my returning a costume. I was informed by Mou that “handmade items are not perfect, and that there are always errors....that an exact fit is not possible” Well, of course, I became the difficult customer he made me to be. Unfortunately, we shouted back and forth at each other. Finally, he offered to cancel my order and give me 75% refund less his shipping expenses (of what I am not exactly sure...the costume? A check in the mail?). I was pushing for a full refund and an apology– which wasn’t happening. I finally kowtowed, and had to shout this over his continuing litany of “difficult customer, starving Egyptians, I don’t want to do business with you” to be heard. I agreed to accept the second costume late, but as long as he understood how disappointed I am with Isis Exchange and that I would try to warn as many dancers as possible from using his company.

So– yes I must admit at times in dealing with Isis Exchange over the past two days I have acted like a tantrum two year old. I am not proud of my behavior, but sadly it took so much action on my behalf to find out the status of my order, and to come with up solutions to this debacle. I did not want to rip off Isis Exchange, but I did want what was promised to me when it was promised to me. The costume is due to arrive a few days post performance :-( I am hoping that will be a good fit, or at least can be altered on my end to achieve that sought after fit.

I realize not everyone has had a bad experience with this company. I read in an earlier posting, that someone had a friend who had a terrible experience with Isis Exchange, but with no explanation why. I decided to share my dealings with them to help provide better information, and to prevent someone living through this same ordeal. Hopefully this costume will provide me with enough dancing bliss to be able to overcome this crudy experience.

If you choose to order through Isis Exchange, may you have a wonderful experience and be treated well.

Please contact me if you have any questions-
-----Isis Exchange’s Verbage-----------------------------

According to their website:

Off the listing of the Original Costume I ordered: (CST005)
“If you are not in rush, you can order this costume at your exact measurements.”

Return Policy:

“If you received your package in a bad condition or simply you do not like the item within 3 days of receiving it, you can ship it back for a full refund or an immediate exchange for no additional S&H costs. No questions asked!

Any special orders can not be returned for a full refund. However, they can be returned for 75% of the purchase price as a Store Credit only and it must be returned within 3 days of receipt.”

As for the starving Egyptians:
(again from their website, under “about us”)

“We are firm advocate against child labor & "Sweat Shops". We personally see to it that our employees are fairly compensated for their hard work, have good working conditions and fair pay.”

Ok, so I want to make a Classical style belt and bandau bra from sequinned fabric. The fabric I have is a firm mesh that is covered in linear stitched sequins. But I can't bring myself to cut it in case I'm just overwhelmed by a pile of sequins flying off.

In my head it would appear that if I cut the fabric at least two inches larger than I need it, shed the sequins that will immediately do so and then stitch along the edge close to the remaining sequins it'll hold em in place and I'll be able to fold and stitch the mesh underneath......

But that's just in my head - anyone actually used this stuff and have any suggestions as to how to work with it?

Hokay! I just finished a project for a friend of mine: it's a bra and belt set that I put mirrors on for her. The belt base and the bra were purchased by her beforehand; my job was to cover the bra to match the belt base, and add the mirrors.

I'd post the pictures if I had the ability to do so, but I'll describe them as best I can.

The mirrors were attached on the belt by sewing a metal ring to the belt, then putting the mirror in between the belt fabric and the ring and stitching it down. The mirror (sizes 1" dia. to 1/4" dia.) is effectively sandwiched between the belt fabric and the mirror, which has a diameter a little bit smaller than the mirror itself. There are 32 mirrors on the belt. The mirrors on the bra are sewn into the cover so that they show through buttonhole-like openings. These are sandwiched between the bra cover and the bra base; there are 26 mirrors on the bra. The entire set is hand-stitched, with approximately 20 hours of work total put into it.

My problem is this: every other commission I've had, it's been trade-for-trade (i.e., you cut my hair, I'll make your pants) or I've only charged people for the materials needed. I've never charged for labor before, and have no idea how to go about doing it. My friend is insisting on paying me for labor, and I don't know what to tell her the price is. There are a few materials I had to purchase (thread, rings, mirrors) that will be included in the price; my question is, for those of you who do this more often: what do you charge as a 'labor' cost?

And I did do some online searching; seems sets like this go from $50-$300 apiece. I just want to know what a fair price would be.

Thanks for your help!

Here are a couple of very helpful links.
This first one is instructions for making a "modesty bra cuff"
people.tribe.net/4a8321e6-...7917965c6d

This second one is for making a 1 1/2+ circle skirt without the added bulk around the abdomen.

If and when you use these 2 patterns, all I ask is that I get credit. If you need more help or have questions please feel free to PM me.

I don't even own a sewing machine lol..only time I ever get out the needle and cotton is to sew on ballet elastics and alter clothing, darn socks holes etc.....

I have a plain red satin circle skirt that Im going to attempt to add a layer of black netting & some more black & gold material to the bottom of the skirt, I'll have it hitched up at the front to show my lacy fluffie ruffle pants that Kathleen made me..

The woman in my local crafty place was FAB, helped pick the materials, told me to pin paper to the skirt and then to the material so that I get the right sizing, cut etc...

Just really crapping myself about messing it up now, hoping one of the belly ladies who has a sewing machine can give me a hand this week!
The problem: The little prongs that hold them on catch on EVERYthing... and I lose them while I dance.

So far, fortunately, I've been able to find them and put them back, but I can't really go hunting for errant stones after a performance.

So... anyone have ideas on how to make them STAY, like good little rhinestones? Does anyone else have this problem? How do you deal with it?

I've considered taking just a drop of clear nail polish, or even super glue, and touching it on each little prong where it meets the stone, but I'm afraid to try it in case it discolors the stone, or leaves an obvious "Hello. I'm glued here." sort of look.

I've cleaned the shuttle race and carefully re-aligned all of the pieces, tried different thread and new needles, all to no avail. I thought about just squeezing out the glue, setting the earring or button in the glue and pressing it down into the glue to set.
So, anyone have any suggestions on a terrific glue they use for fabric/jewels/buttons, etc.? Can anyone suggest a better way I might try it?

Hi,

Ok so I just got this costume and OMG it is amazing! but there are a few problems

1. I am a 30 lb yoyoer and right now I am at the high end of the yoyo so the cups are WAY tooo small
2. the cups are SO small that there is major nippledge

I think there is a way to make these bigger expecially since the material is ruched and folded in a layering fashion. I was thinking I could make an incert for each cup about 2 inches wide and the length of the cup that I could put in with snap buottons. Stating under the strap of the bra and comming to the center at an round but angled fashion. When I am bigger right now I am about a 36 small D and I can be a 34 C and anywhere in btween, So when I am heavier than I can just snap the incerts in and when I am not take them out. I could make them in the same fashion as the cups with the rusched fabric and just make it thicker on the bottom so that the cup has a smooth look and not a step between the cups, the thng I am not sure about is what material to use as a base, Does some one have an Idea or have done this before? Any thoughts if this could work and what to use?

Picture the rhinestone trim that has been in my dresser for months lining the edges down the front & on the sleeves- yummy!
But- I haven't worn that style anything in years, not sure the costume would go with any of my routines, it definitely doesn't seem the kind of costume for American veil work. What do you DO in a ghawazee coat that makes no pretense of looking historic, tribal, etc?

I am looking for *just* the right fabric for a commissioned bellydance gown and am not having much luck locally.

I need something with some lycra spandex in it, 2-way (not 4-way) stretch, in black and bronze/copper metallic. I'm open to lots of possibilities within these parameters, but I'm just not finding much here in MI.

I have sent swatch requests to NYC, but haven't received anything yet and time is growing short. I really don't want to order anything sight unseen -- can anyone tell me if there is a little specialty fabric store somewhere here (hopefully Detroit/Ann Arbor/Dearborn, although I will travel a bit) which would have a good selection of bellydance-friendly fabric?

Even Haberman's crapped out on me....I was shocked!

TIA for any advice...

I got this idea from a sewing site. There is a product called aisle runner that is used in churches so the bride's dress doesn't drag on the ground and get dirty. Fabric Aisle Runners are made of a durable spun-bonded non-woven material. You can find it on ebay. I tape the pattern pieces to my sliding glass door and then tape the aisle runner over the window - top to bottom. I use the window like a light box. Then using a sharpie, I trace around the size of the pattern that I want to cut out, including any important darts, dots, sewing help, bias direction, etc. Not only do I not cut into an expensive multi-sized pattern ( I usually end up sewing for friends and family), but I have a sturdy version of the pattern because aisle runner is much like heavy duty interfacing. I suppose you could use the heavy duty interfacing but the aisle runner ends up being less expensive even though you have to buy an entire roll and have it shipped. I've been able to use the "paper" pattern to pin together and see if the size is correct much like a sloper.
