Would anyone know where to find this type of costume?

Hi All,

I am in the hunt for a certain type of Cabaret costume I have only seen once in a photo.

Rather than the usual beaded & fringed bra/belt/skirt set or beaded bra + embellished skirt sets, I saw a photo of a dancer wearing a heavily embellished skirt with a beaded belt. The difference was the top... it was NOT a bra. It was a matching choli tie-front type of top with long sleeves. The top completely matched the skirt in terms of sequins, beads, etc. Just no fringe and it tied in the front in center, below cleavage. It looked beautiful as well as incredibly comfy! The only thing I would do to it might be sew in some bra cups for extra support so a regular bra worn underneath wouldn't show.

I've never seen this type of costume offered before on any of the usual costume sites before. Does this style of cab costume ring a bell for anyone? Seen one? Have any ideas who sells them?

Any responses will be much appreciated!

Anyone know where I can get some of this? Local fabric stores don't carry it. It's regular elastic, with "threads" of elastic through it on one side. (nice for non-slippage) plz see pic in photos

(This is a personal cause for me, so i do what i can wherever i am.) Please PM me if you are interested! (i can supply pink costume pieces too...)

Henna Penna: Anyone tried it? (X post)

So I recently discovered (thanks to a tribe tip) that the henna penna exists. I 've wanted a product like this for ages. I've always been frustrated with the fact that I can draw some very pretty henna designs on paper then completely fail to reproduce them with paste, and I think the henna penna might solve my problem. And at the price of one decently detailed professional henna job, I thought it's probably worth a try.

So has anyone here actually tried it? If so, what was your experience? How dark did it stain? I tend to stain pretty dark, regular henna gets almost black on my feet and fingers. Was it easy to use? How long did the stain last? how would you rate the product overall? Which color looks the mostl iek regular henna?

Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences!!!!!

Hi,
I'm working on a warrior woman bellydance fusion performance and I want a brown leather halter bra. Does anyone know of artists who make them? I've tried etsy and ebay to no avail.
Thanks!

TUTORIAL: Sleeveless Ghawazee Coat

Hi Everyone,

So here's my first contribution from the "what do you want in a tutorial thread?" Big thanks to everyone who chimed in...the educator in me loves making these things as I learn a lot doing them so please keep the requests coming. Also, please let me know if you like them - or if you have any questions as I'm happy to help out.

Here's a tutorial for a sleeveless Ghawazee Coat, refashioned from a pre-existing dress:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mishakitty/sets/72157606511834047/

Approximate project time: 1.5 hours
Cost: Under $20

Notes:
* Sleeveless because that's the one I could crank out faster (I'll do a sleeve-ed one soon, I promise!)
* Sleeveless because you can wear all sorts of other shirts under it for a variety of looks
* Be sure to try on, try on, try on! I still need a slight adjustment in the bodice, but it's 97% done...if I hadn't kept trying it on I would've been lost. This is one of those projects where you may need to do constant slight adjustments, so be sure to keep checking in on your work.

Enjoy!

I have them in silvertone and brass, but are there any coppertone ones to be found? A customer is asking for copper, but I haven't seen any other than the Copper Camel ones, and those are more fancy dangles than sew-on button/plate things.

Hello!!

I´m new in the tribe...and I start taking clases of bellydance and tribal fusion one year ago..So I´m trying to make some belts and bra by myself little by little!

First of all sorry if I´ve repeated the post...

The reason of these post is that I have problems when I cover the bra with a fabric..I thought that it would be the easier thing...but when I finished covering it..oh my god, I look it and it looks like I have attached pockets or somethig strange to the cups of the bra!! It looks horrible... The first time I thought that it was becasuse the fabric was so rough...but nooooooo. I`ve change it and the result is the same...!!! I`m not a expert sewing I´ve started recently experimenting, the truth...but my result...it scares..

So...How I have to cover a bra..and what it´s the best type of fabric to do it...?

Thank you so much in advance..!!!!!

((I have not take english classes for a long time..so..sorry for the mistakes!!!!!!))

Well, i posted this in DIY but I figured I'd post h ere too in case.
I LOVE wearing pants to dance in, I always buy LRose as they are about half the price of any other pair of pants for Belly Dance. My question is does anyone know what kind of pattern I should use, or where to get one, for stretch fabric that i can modify into say Melos, or Firefly, or Suhaila's style?
It woudl super cool to make my own pants, and probably very easy.
Any suggestion would be super helpful.

Gothic Costume Ideas?

My troupe mates and I are doing a calendar for a fundraising event. We each took the month we'd be most interested in.

I, of coarse, picked October because I LOVE Halloween and Gothic bellydance. However, when presented with the opportunity to do anything I want... I'm completely out of any "new" ideas for a gothic inspired bellydance outfit.

I'm looking for an idea that is more on the "cutesy" gothic side... It can't be scary or too dark because it's for a fundraiser and it's something the genpop has to look at for a month! ;p

Anyway, any cute ideas for costuming (and a set if you can think of one?)

I have a list..... can anyone add to it?

Ballet Neck
Bateau or Boat Neck
Cowl Neck
Draped Neck
Halter Neck
Jewel Neck
Keyhole
Notched
Off the shoulder
Portrait Neck
Scoop Neck
Sweethear Neck
Turtle Neck
Victorian

Can you add any necklines to this? Keep in mind that things like "plunging" are referrring to the depth of the cut and not the actual name of the neckline, and I'm looking for types of necklines, not collars. If anyone can help, thank you!

And please bear with me! I'm working on a project that I will be posting for you!

covering a (big) bra

Hi folks! Does anyone have a link to something that specifically references how to cover LARGE bra cups? We're talkin' pommelos here...

I've seen the tutorials that describe the various steps in covering a bra (i.e. buckram lining, cover the cups, deconstruct the straps). But I'm trying to get my head wrapped around how to effectively cover two spherical domes with silk brocade. I assume there will be at least 1 seam running over the apexes, but I'm really kind of stuck as to how to start the process, and I'm considering scrapping the brocade and switching to a knit Speedo fabric that might make the job easier. I'd rather have the silk - anybody got any hints?

Thanks in advance!

I am new to Bellydance but have sewed for years so when I found myself with 3 yrds of 3" upholstery bullion like this ( http://trimsplus.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=24108&Category_Code=bullion ) in Burgundy my mind turned to what I could possibly do with it costuming wise. Then it hit me, tassels!

Now I am not really that into tribal but it was fun and who knows maybe I'll use them someday but... they turned out pretty cool so now I might have to make myself a Tribaret costume just for them. I also thought I would pass it on in case anyone else likes them.

Picture: http://tribes.tribe.net/bellydancecostumeguild/photos/5b983232-c465-4d55-b403-8d2989bc0218

1 yrd of 3" bullion made 1 of the larger tassels (5" 90x) or 4 of the small ones (5" 24x).
The result is shiny & textured.

Hey all - I've got me 2 pairs of melodia's - LOVE them, and two pairs of Geishamoths too (fab), and i stumbled across some pants a while back but can't remember what they are called or who made them - they were stripy too with lacing down the side. Does anyone know of the make or if they can give me links to funky pants they like and can recommend?

Storing Costumes

Most of the dancers I know, including myself, store our costumes on hangers in garment bags. I read somewhere that they can stretch out so it is better to store them in a box. I think they are more prone to wrinkle in a box.

What are your thoughts?

TUTORIAL: Fabric Scrap and Felt Zil Case

Hi Everyone!

Here's a quick little stash-buster that's great if you, like me, have a ton of fabric scraps and don't know quite what to do with them. This tutorial is for a felt-lined "fabric envelope" that would work great for your gig jewelry or finger cymbals. Heck, make several and color-coordinate them to go with your costumes so you know which jewelry goes with what!

I did this in cotton with felt but I bet it'd be great with brocade!

And, hey, if you make one, please send me a link or post a link to it here - I'd love to see what you come up with!

Water damage to costume - need help!

I have an orange lycra costume that some how ended up getting wet and has blackish water marks on the lycra now.

There are beads all around it but not covering the damage. It's right on the front of the bra and is pretty obvious. Not really in a section that I can add more beads or patches.

Any suggestions on how to clean the water spots without damaging the costume?

Thanks,
(I love Sandra's style btw)
I have a pattern for a fitted mermaid skirt but don't know if that's the right direction. I have some purple lycra material I have in mind for this. Any suggestions?

I came across this site that shows you how to make a "dressform" customized to your body using duct tape and an old t-shirt...I haven't tried it yet but it makes sense. Great for those of us who can't afford the investment of a professional one but want a great custom fit! Has anyone ever tried this before? Be sure to check out the comments on the bottom of the page, great ideas for stuffing (you'll know what I mean after you read the tutorial LOL)

This may be a silly question, but I want to know if you use interface when sewing with lycra.

I'm doing my first sheath skirt out of lycra. I want the Egyptian style skirt with designs placed directly onto the skirt. Since I don't want to use elastic, I'm modifying a regular skirt pattern that call for interface. Should I use it or not? Any help and suggestion will be appreciated.

TUTORIAL: Double Panel / Petal Skirt

Hi Everyone!

I've posted a new tutorial based on the idea of a panel skirt. This time it's a tutorial with a dual-purpose! You can use it to create a double panel (skirt with multiple layers) skirt OR a petal skirt. I love to wear petal skirts with cabaret type costumes but have had a heck of a time finding them for sale. When it came to making them, I had some trouble trying to get everything even hem-wise. Then I was playing with panel skirts and it dawned on me - many petal skirts are just panels that are cut in a certain way or arranged in layers! So here's a tutorial that will show you how to make an adjustable petal skirt that has the cute double layers that we see so often.

It's here - feedback is always appreciated and welcome! Enjoy!

so.. i am working on new costume for upcoming year... i choose the most gorgeous stretch velvet and shinny things for it [keeping it secretish] any.. dilema...

After sewing the skirt togther and finishing off the edges.. starting to bead and I realize... the back is nap up ! I don't know how I missed it earlier... It is more of a how it feels thing then a how it looks thing... so Should I do the 'proper' sewing thing and take it a part and replace the upside down back section?

it is 3 way stretch so it does not bind.. and it's not like I am going to be 'petting' the dang thing... girl's what should I do?

Belly dance csotume for sale 4pc pink and gold

This is 4 piece a hand made costume. The set includes skirt , gauntlets, bra and belt. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra will fit a 34C. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well.
This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist, class recitals, parties photos and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume. You may see photos on page 1 in my pics

The skirt is made from a 4 way stretch lycra fabric. It has an elastic waist band un-stretch the waist band is 29 inches. The length of the skirt 39 inches. The skirt can be shorten if needed . The skirt has a slit up one side.
The gauntlets are made from the same fabric as the skirt.
The bra will fit a 34 C. The bra cups are covered in a pink colored fabric with pink bugle beads sewn into the fabric. The bra is trimmed in a gold sequin gimp trim. The bra has beaded fringe made from pink seed beads that hangs about 4 3/4 inches long in groups of three .The neck straps are about 34 inches long and tie in a crises cross manner with D rings. The side panels are covered in a pink color velvet fabric(as well as the neck straps I would like to add) The side panels have D rings attach to the ends to add closure for the bra. The is bra is lined and very sturdy will hold it's shape.

The belt is cover in the same pink beaded fabric and gold trim as the bra cups. The belt is one piece and is a tie front as if it were a hip sash . (has a bit more weight to it than a hip sash) The belt has an elastic casing in the back that can be gather to help with a better fit around the hips for a dancer with curves. The belt is 35 inches long. The belt will fit a small to medium . The belt can be sized down before I send it if you would like it smaller. The fringe is made from pink colored seed beads like on the bra and is about 5 3/4 inches long. This is a nice set sparkles well in light and good movement with the fringe Email with any questions and more photos tcsdance@aol.com

I'm thinking of making a costume with a wraparound or sarong style skirt. However, although I like the idea (easier to adjust to expanding/shrinking hipline?) I can't quite envisage how it will work as a costume - does anyone know of any examples they can point me towards (i.e. give me a link to pics) or any sage words of advice??

Thanks in advance!

Yes, the rumors are true! www.AkashaWear.com is up and fully functional!! Ya-ay! ( in Kermit the Frog’s voice, arms flailing above head )

I am VERY excited that it’s finally here – I’ve waited a long, long time - and now I finally have my own business of custom-made, one-of-a-kind bellydance clothing line. There are many wonderful designers out there, and I’m glad there’s enough opportunity for us all. I feel very lucky to have my own business and getting to do something I love ~ designing and sewing!

I like individuality; therefore I try to reflect that in my designs by having limited run fabrics in an array of funky, fun, and functional styles & colors. Keep checking for news designs to come!

Please check out my site, let me know what you think, send it on to people you know, and maybe order something that strikes your fancy! ☺

They say word of mouth is a strong tool, and I hope I can count on you to help me test that theory!

So I have some Fauxodia sash pants that I got at a yard sale (that ended up being too small and short later ^^; but they were for five bucks!) that got my Melo addiction started and well, three Melos later, I'd like to do something with them. I'd like to sell or exchange them but due to somethings with the pants (a tear on the leg and a stain on the sash: http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u226/lokithekender/VariousEJpics036.jpg I'll get better pictures of the damaged areas soon) I don't think that's plausible now. Anyone has any ideas on what I can do with them? I don't want to toss them in the trash :(

Hey people, i'm new to tribe.net. Anyway, Ive been dancing for about 3 years and I've only done tribal and ethnic costumes up until now. My teacher would like to see me make my own cabaret costume before i move in about a month so that I have at least one in my closet. I've never really had too much interested in cabaret, but I would like to find out more. I have no idea where to start on getting a design together for a whole cabaret costume. I have all the components that i think I'll need, but I'd like to find good pictures of details and such for a cabaret costume. Thanks in advance for any help!

beading onto stretch velvet

I'm about to start a new costume which will have gold sequins and beading - on black stretch velvet.
Do I bead onto nonstretch backing cloth (mesh) or do I persevere with beading directly onto the velvet? I really want to have an even finish and I find it very hard to do this on stretch cloth!!!
Thanks!

The Skirt Gnome!

The Skirt Gnome residing in my closet tells me I have too many skirts and must find new homes for some of them.

ALL skirts are $10 each! It's a total steal :) I'll be putting up more as I find them.

I can take paypal or money orders. Take a look:

**Purple** Please note that the hip scarf and top are NOT for sale. This is a drawstring skirt, and can fit up to a Large.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f20/soapcultgoddess/102_1892.jpg

**Red and Purple** Hip scarf and top not for sale. This is also a drawstring skirt and will fit up to a large.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f20/soapcultgoddess/102_1911.jpg

**Brown** Coin belt and top not for sale. This has en elastic band and is a few inches shorter than the other. It has very nice "weight" and really fans out when you twirl :) Also will fit up to a large size.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f20/soapcultgoddess/102_1909.jpg

**Red** The veil and costume are not "specifically" for sale, but if you are interested, make me an offer :) This skirt has an elastic waist and can easily fit up to a large.

What do YOU want for a Tutorial?

I've suddenly wound up with a bit of free time, and of course that means it's time to make another costume ;) I've got a couple of ideas sketched out and I'll document the process as I go but i was curious....

what would YOU like to see a tutorial on?

so far, i've done tut's on covering a bra, re-purposing a ball skirt into a cabaret style circle skirt, and re-purposing a big top into a ren faire style peasant top...what else would you like to see? panel skirts are easy - i'll probably do that too - but i was thinking perhaps the mermaid skirt and maybe also some easy gauntlets?

looking for ideas...what do you need help on?

Help Please! Parie's Peasant Blouse Pattern - Xpost

I need to make a peasant blouse out of this pattern and I've lost the sleeve piece that I need. It's the short sleeve with the "flaps" on it. I have the shape from the directions (and my fuzzy memory), but is there anyone out there who can send me the measurements so I can recreate it? I need to have this done by Friday, otherwise I would just buy another pattern.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, so now that my first bra is done it's time to move on to my skirt. I have about 4 - 4 1/2 yards of reversible fabric in red and black. (pic in my profile) I want to make this piece reversible so I can get 2 costumes from 1 garment. I'm tall and bottom heavy. I don't want to put too much extra fabric around my hips and make me look even more off balance.

So far I've thought about doing harem pants, a handkerchief point skirt, a circle skirt (if I have enough fabric) with openings up each thigh to give it more swing, or a mermaid skirt (which is low on my list because I have no pattern). Anybody have any ideas for me? What would you do in this situation?

Best place for short term cabaret costumes

I'm looking into buying my first cabaret costume in the next couple of months. Thing is, I've been dieting. The weight hasn't been coming off too quickly, so whatever I buy should fit for a while (I hope). I just don't want to end up spending $300-$400 on a costume that I'll only get to wear a couple of times. I saw some reasonably priced (less than $200) with Egypt-Latin Bazaar on Ebay, but Ebay can be hit or miss. Does anyone have any experience with them or have any other suggestions for me?

My sewing skills are basic at best so don't laugh, but do I just make a shorter version of a circle skirt pattern. Will it work the same way in terms of how full it will be etc?

2-Panel or Scant Skirt

Hello. I am new to Tribe as well as to this group. I am looking for guidance with a project.

I have bought an "Indian" skirt (tie-died with shisha mirrors) that was too small (I knew it was too small going in as it measured 35-1/2 inches in the waist), but I could not resist the colors. I decided that I could make what I call a 2-panel skirt out of it (as my full-hip measurement is 54 inches, waist is 43). I have also found the name to be a Scant Skirt. I plan to fill in the "gaps" with a chiffon-type material. My main question is how big do I cut the front panel? The easy way would be to do 1/2 front panel and 1/2 back panel, but I am not sure it would look right. I have seen pictures/found text where the skirt is done 1/4 to 3/4s, 1/3 to 2/3s and also 1/4 to 1/2. I am not doing a one-color skirt. The Indian skirt is a burnt persimmon (or pumpkin) color on the top and is purple on the bottom. The chiffon material I have chose is an olive with brown stripes. I know this sounds a little odd, but the colors go together nice. With the color sceme in mind, how I cut the panels will be obvious. Should my chiffon filled gaps be more in the front or equal on the sides? What suggestions do you have?

I don't know if anyone is familiar with Kashi clothing. They make tops, skirts, and pants from recycled sari silk. They don't have a website, to my knowledge, otherwise I'd provide that link.

I want to make a wrap top similar to the ones they sell: a crop-top style back, long, wrapping front that forms a V-neck, and loose sleeves. Can anyone recommend a good pattern for this, either online or a brand I can look for in a local fabric store?

Hi!
I've started designing belly dance Indian Gypsy style silk and sequin saree costumes on my last trip to India. I'm in green modelling with 3 of my students. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the process... from noisy smelly rickshaw rides to vibrant intense immense crowded markets to the sensory overload of rooms overflowing with sequins and silk fabrics and working with my wonderful tailor Ganu. I go mack to India in October 2008 and the plan is to make many more, with different designs. I'd love your feedback about them!

I've got a performance coming up at a Pirate Festival and decided that I needed one of those nifty peasanty tops to wear under my uber kuchi coin bra. Time to buy? Of course not! But it was curiously easy to make.

Check out the tutorial here (it's incredible how quickly you can make this from a pre existing shirt - which, of course, means there's very little seam-finishing to do!)

ok, so after hours of trying to come up with a proper base form for my first belt i've just about given up.
i'm trying to make something more or less like the "Vixen" style http://www.sugarpetals.com/bra_belt.asp
this is where you all come in :)

either you know how to help me make a well-shaped base.... it can't be that hard, can it??? lol
or you know other websites than sugar petals that sell pre-made belt bases or forms.... (though i would actually prefer to learn how-to myself)

in both cases i'd be eternally grateful :)

Tribal ruffle pants pattern or ideas?

Hi~
I am looking to make a pair of ruffle pants... well, it is more accurate to say that I'm in the middle of making them already... I'm confused about how to space out the ruffles. I know how to gather, and I have some cool fabrics that will look great at the bottom of the pants I made this morning, but I don't know really how to do the layered ruffles.

Any suggestions?

Any suggestions on how to enlargen the area/cups for my recital?

TUTORIAL: Quick and Easy Circle Skirt

Ever have a gig or a performance where you need a particular color of skirt? But, well, if you're like me you always seem to need what you don't have and don't realize it until the last minute. Last night, I needed either a white or silver skirt for two different costumes. It was a last-minute sort of need, and not one I could rectify with ebay ;) So, in sheer desparation, I headed into a thrift store, picked up a ball skirt, and transformed it into a circle skirt.

It worked quite well! I honestly had never thought of doing this until when the need arose so, if you've never considered re-purposing an old full skirt or prom dress, I can tell you it works great!

I made a tutorial of it (hope you all like it ;) ) because I wanted to remember how the heck I did this. It's super simple, and quick, and the results were great (helllloooo not having to hem the skirt or let it hang!):

The tutorial is here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mishakitty/sets/72157605119138444/
I'll post photos of how it looks on asap, but I wore it last night for a gig and got lots of compliments!

PS - I confess that I love making these tutorial thingys. Hope I don't annoy all of you by posting them!

Hiya,

Ive just customised my second ever bra - wooo hooo

But Im now at the stage where I don't know whether to take off the bra straps and add halter neck ties, or just cover them up?

I ask this as Im a DD/E cup and have never worn halter neck bellydance bra as worry that I would have a wardrobe malfunction during performance, I just don't know if they would be as secure and wanted some advice really :-)

Thanks
Covering a Bra: A Costume Tutorial

Hi all!

I made this quick (and very very very simple) photo tutorial on how to cover a bra for a costume. Thought it might help some folks out here, too. The photos aren't so great as my home lighting is odd, but I think the point gets across. I'll be adding a few more photos in a bit to show how the final decorated bra turned out, but so far you can at least get the entire process of the step-by-step. if you all like it, i'd be happy to do some more soon (like how to do a cabaret mermaid skirt, how to make a panel skirt, etc). I know the resources are online already, but I find the actual photos help me a lot too.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mishakitty/2309394587/

ps - yes, this is SO for a pastel and furry tribal fusion costume. i confess. sue me. ha!
