Anyone ever come across a book like this? Where either photos or drawings are used and each pic shows the country and time period with maybe some info about the type of dance performed in the type of costume? Info about how religion influenced it's appearance or disappearance as a fad for the time? I know I'm stretching here. I would like to find a big book like this.

Re: A book that is a complete history of bellydance costumes in different cultures in different periods.....
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 5:45 AMIn Argentine tango they often have shows about the history of tango, showing all the different styles that evolved during the history of this dance. I wonder if they ever do that about bellydane. Is there any such thing as a "bellydance musical"? If there isn't, would that not be a great idea?

Sun, March 23, 2008 - 9:32 PMI would check out Serpent of the Nile. It's a pretty solid book, and covers the origins of the dance up through modern times, including Mata Hari, the silver screen, and a bit of modern nightclub as well. you can find it here: www.amazon.com/Serpent-Ni.../ref=sr_1_1

Mon, March 24, 2008 - 8:54 AMI agree that Serpent of the Nile is an excellent book. Here are a few others that you can order through Amazon.com.
"Sacred Woman, Sacred Dance; Awakening Spirituality Through Movement and Ritual" by Iris J. Stewart;
"Serpent of the Nile: Women and Dance in the Arab World" by Wendy Buonaventura;
"Grandmother's Secrets: The Ancient Rituals and Healing Power of Belly Dancing" by Rosina-Fawzia B. Al-Rawi -

Wed, March 26, 2008 - 9:17 AMit's been years since I read Wendy Buonaventura's Serpent of the Nile, but I remember it having quite a few generalizations, myths and fantasies, so read with a bit of skepticism- tho I remember there being some good stuff in there too, so enjoy that as well. Now I'll have to go back and re-read it so I can be more specific. -

Re: A book that is a complete history of bellydance costumes in different cultures in different periods.....
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 3:07 AMI would agree with the less than accurate portrayal of some of the information in Serpent of the Nile - in particular there's a reference to a statue where it is claimed that the woman portrayed is dancing a hip-drop. This is not accurate - no-one knows what she is doing....she could be stepping over poo is something someone has said! So, read with the obligatory pinch of salt. But it DOES have some lovely illustrations.
However there doesn't seem to be one book or Net resource for the costuming differences mentioned in the original post...

Mon, April 7, 2008 - 3:06 PMI don't know of a complete, accurate "History of Bellydance" - but I'm anxiously waiting for Morocco to finish her book. She is one smart lady who has done the field research and knows her stuff.
She also has an excellent reading list, check out her suggestions at
