I was asked by an acquaintance to dance at her 50th birthday party and I agreed to do it and charge her my friends/family rate.
She at first wanted a 15 min show and now has asked for two 5 min shows where I'd have to stay and wait to dance again. I guaranteed that I would do the first 5 mins but may not be able to linger long after that.
Its a party with up to 100 guests and Im not the only performer- Im feeling a bit awkward with the arrangement and this was a verbal contract and a 5 min show is pretty short, even for my friends/family rate.
Any suggestions on how to make this a decent biz experience for both of us?

Re: shorter shows and rates
Sat, March 10, 2007 - 4:13 AMIf someone asks for a shorter show to get a lower rate, I do not see that as a legitimate bargaining tool. While you may be dancer for a shorter period of time, you still spent the same amount of time getting ready and driving over there. You still had to rehearse and burn your music. And when I calculate "time", I include standing around time. That means if I start later than the scheduled time and any time in between sets. That's time that you could be dancing for someone else, so they should be paying for that.
So this is my long winded way of saying that a decent business experience for you would be to be fairly compensated for all the time you spend creating this show.

Re: shorter shows and rates
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 10:12 AMThanks Taaj! The outcome was pretty good. I gave her my friends/family rate and she doubled it for 2 shorter shows. I gave her a commitment for the first before I arrived and that if I could, I would stay for a second show. I ended up staying and danced.
