Crochet bra/halter top

topic posted Thu, September 6, 2007 - 12:15 PM by  Shazadi
Does anyone know where to find an acurate crochet pattern for a bra/halter top? I have tried some free patterns out there on the web, but none have been successful. Also I have had no luck with finding patterns in stores. I am making this for myself, and am a 34 ribcage D cup. I cannot seem to be able to get the increasing and decreasing right for the cups. I would be willing to buy a pattern, especially if I could get the perfect fit! :o)
Thanks,
Shazadi

Here is a site where I found the pattern you are looking for......
    www.artemisimports.com/

    Look under costumes patterns.

there is a pattern book you could get from the library called "Get your crochet on: fly tops and funky flavas" and it has some patterns that I would like to try because the pictures look as though they are built for larger busted ladies--it seems to me that the cups offer more shaping. I wear a 36D/38C so I can relate to where you are coming from. I think it would also help to use a yarn that is not very stretchy, in addition to a smallish hook, trying to obtain the tightest gauge and most support....what do you think?

I have a pattern for a string bikini top that could have a band added at the bottom, but it still will not have the support that any woman over a B cup would need for dancing.

Basically, you begin with a short chain, and increase at one end. You work one sc on one side of the chain, put 3 sc in the last chain and then work down the other side of the chain. Chain one and sc in each stitch till you get to the "top" of the previous row where you put the 3 sc. .....That doesn't make sense.

Chain 7. SC in 2nd chain from hook and in next 4 chain. 3 sc in last chain (increase!). Sc in back of loops in next 5 stitches. (5,3,5)
Row 2 .. Work back loop only from now on.... chain 1 (turning chain) sc in next 6 sitches, 3 sc in next stitch, sc in next 6 stitches. (6,3,6)

Keep up the idea till the cup is the right size. The shape will come. To finish, you attach your yarn to the top of the cup and make a chain long enough. For dancing, I would probably try to figure out spacing and make a band across the bottom. I'd use a piece of string or cotton yarn long enough to comfortably tie around the back. Tie it there! Hold the cups in place and mark the locations on the string. Untie and using the string as a guide; create ties and attach the band with sc across the bottoms of the cup. If you're only talking about an inch wide band, I'd do the whole length in sc (both loops). Treate the string like you would a measuring tape. Don't crochet with it.

I have some yarn left after making a fringe belt and decided to try out my idea. It's been a while since I saw the bikini top pattern, so I was working from memory. I didn't take photos of my two attempts this morning, but I think I like the idea of making a square and working around that (on two sides) till you get a bra cup of the required size. I did one of each this morning and will show them to a friend this evening. I need to try the samples on the mannequin which is in a closet that is blocked by boxes of stuff. My thought is to make and sell a bra and belt combo. The yarn has a bit of glitz, so I'm not sure how I want to add some more attraction.

The pattern I'm remembering was printed by Columbia Minerva in the late 70's. I keep thinking I bought a magazine recently that has the square side bra in it. I've seen the beaded bras in import shops and the price is too low to make in crochet thread and sell.

I'll try to post a photo next week.

I have been trying all week to get those photos in my profile! Between Tribe and work this week ..... you get the idea.

I will try to find the bikini pattern and I think I have a pattern in a magazine for a bra that starts with a side square. I never tried to make them in thread with beads because they are too easily found in the Indian stores.

Rather than sell a halter bra and belt combo, I've been convinced to sell a DIY bra cover with a finished belt. I know from my own experience that not all 40DD bras are the same. I'll have to make up a sample to show ideas. There would be no question about support. I want to make something that is affordable for the beginner or other person on a tight budget. I'll probably buy up a few different size bras at the DAV to use for measuring.

I finally finished one of the patterns from "Azita's Crocheted Bras and Girdles". It is the brown bra on my profile. The Large cup pattern is a bit small on me, I'm a 38 B/C, but I think it can be easily altered. The top turned out a bit differently than the picture on the instructions, I'm looking forward to making the others and seeing how they turn out. I would recommend these patterns as they are easy, just make sure you read through ALL the instructions. They can get a bit confusing.
