K, I've been thinking about this -- how much do I invest in bellydance: lessons, workshops, music, costumes, jewelry, makeup, etc? I'd really LOVE to do the $700 course by Fat Chance but that's what got me trying to put pencil to paper. Please hear me out cause I know everyone will say spend as much as you want, etc.
I just turned 52 and am really in pretty good health. No arthritis, bad knees, only the occassional back ache. But even then, how many years can I realistically expect to dance? If I'd started to dance 20 years ago, wanted to teach or perform at the big events, I probably wouldn't be having this conversation. But, an older dancer who pretty much does it for fun...how does one know when to stop spending money on a hobby?
Has anyone else ever thought about this? What were your thoughts or conclusions?

Re: How much do I invest?
Sun, October 5, 2008 - 7:03 PMI think dance is like any other hobby or anything that you enjoy. You spend what you can or as much as you want to have fun. Some spend way more than others. It all really depends on your budget and comfort level. I know dancers who dance ALL the time and spend very little while dancers who never dance outside of class spend ton of cash. It's hard to say because it's all so very personal. As for how long can you dance? As long as you want to and can keep moving. Age isn't a factor. -

Re: How much do I invest?
Sun, October 5, 2008 - 8:06 PMwell put zarina....
i'm 57, have been belly dancing for only 2 years and i've spent a ton of cash on lessons [i take 4 a week], workshops [i take every one i feel compelled to take, and have even taken one i wasn't totally keen on, but it was interesting to learn the difference between tribal and egyptian styles - made me realize i had made the right choice after all], and making costumes -oh dear goddess, the costumes.... some i have NEVER worn yet.... i wear a lot of my costumes to class, just for the fun of it, and cuz now, the women there look forward to *what's she gonna be wearing tonight?* i have danced at 3 student shows, and two haflas, plus performed on Canada Day, for which i made a special costume to wear just for that one event!!!
i took the weekend intensive with Carolena... have you done that? maybe you should do that first, and then the Gen. Skills course, and see if that's enough, or if you want to spend the $700 for the week long course. i would love to drive down to S.F. and take that course, and while i'm there do level one with Suhaila. so on top of the $700 for the course [and whatever it would be for Suhaila's], there will be gas/motel/restaurant food.... it will be an expensive couple of weeks, if i do that. Martina suggested we do a 'belly bus' down from Vancouver.... that would be fun, and sharing gas would help.
but first i have to come up with the money for it..... saving now, and here's hoping nothing comes along to muck it up.... still doesn't mean i will actually be able to do it. and really, i'd like to take the Gen. Skills course before i take the week long course, just so i have my bearings on it. i have Carolena's DVDs and that is helpful... but still, nothing like doing it *in person*.
as Zarina said, how much you spend really depends on how much you are comfortable spending. i don't want to die and be thinking, s*** i should have done that workshop, or taken that course, or made that belt.... ask yourself, "what makes life worthwhile for ME?" when you get your answers then that's what you need to divide up your money and spend it on :)
for me, it's belly dancing and animals/nature.... those are the joys of my life. -

Re: How much do I invest?
Sun, October 5, 2008 - 11:06 PMI spend waaaaay too much I try to justify it by teaching and performing and making a little money here and there. Maybe I sort of break even, but probably not... it's my passion so what else is life and money for? -

Re: How much do I invest?
Mon, October 6, 2008 - 6:02 AMZina - have you been reading my thoughts??
""But, an older dancer who pretty much does it for fun...how does one know when to stop spending money on a hobby?""
This is an *investment* into your own well-being. Think of workshops as mini-vacations
......classes as time spent with friends......costumes, jewelry & cosmetics as a chance to play dress-up.
It's hard to picture myself 10 years down the road ((I'll be 61 then)) in a dance costume. But then, these next 10 years will see me as the mom of (2) teenage daughters ((youngest turns 10 next month, oldest is 11 1/2)) - some of that energy & youthfulness is sure to rub off on me ;-) ;-) ;-)
I will definitely need this investment!!!!!!!! -

Re: How much do I invest?
Mon, October 6, 2008 - 8:12 AMWell...... at 63 - been dancing about 4 yrs. and I don't even want to think about how much money I've spent because I am having such a blast! Being with my friends- dancing , laughing, making costumes, the jewelry- wearing costumes that make you look like a show girl!!! Too much fun!!! Sure- I ache-and pop pain killers but I have a smile on my face that doesn't go away. At this age - to be in this head space- Absolutely PRICELESS !!!!... Invest in your well-being darlin"............... XX Judy -

Re: How much do I invest?
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 11:46 PMYou guys are making me think of one of those Master Card ads....
Dance classes - $15/week
New hip scarf - $25.00
Full tribal costume - $300.00
Creative self expression, sisterhood, and seeing oneself as a living goddess - priceless...
;)
But, its true, ennit?
I also believe that the best way to spend money, beyond necessities of course, is to provide oneself with the means to express one's innate creativity. For some that may be art supplies, or a top line camera; for us its all that goes into our dance. What better way to use one's resources than that? It it the wisest investment one can make, I think. -

Re: How much do I invest?
Mon, October 6, 2008 - 6:09 PMOh Ladies!
such a breath of fresh air you all are!!!
I too got started late (just a few years ago myself), and at this point I really can't put a tally on the cost of all the classes/workshops/privates, let alone costumes and supplies I purchased. But It has all been sooo worth it!
I'm a tad younger than you (at 43) - still much older than most of the young things that complain about the ongoing cost of weekly class (avg. $15 per class) at the studio I opened earlier this year w/ the gal that was MY first instructor...
Do I worry about age when it comes to performing? Not at all - and neither should you.
Ok, so maybe a restaurant venue isn't going to hire someone who doesn't fit in a specific age/size range. There are plenty of other venues/events that do. And then theres troupe performing, instruction, choreographing for others, costume creation & sales - so much that goes hand in hand w/ our art.
Wish there were of more of you around
(any idea where to look?)

Wed, October 15, 2008 - 10:25 AMOkay, I don't want to high jack this thread, but I have a bargan for you. Wiggles of the West is offering a bunch of workshops before the contest starts. 3-4 different classes per time slot to choose from. 8 classes and so much more for only $300. We even have a payment plan. And we have great room rates too here in Las Vegas at Sam's Town.
We have several Headliners (over 45) teaching and of course we also have the contest too.
How much do I spend a year??? Thousands No lie, this puppy isn't cheap to produce. LOL

Re: How much do I invest?
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 4:29 PMWhy not? If you don't take the classes/workshops/whatever, in 10 years, you'll be 62 anyway.
If you keep dancing, you're more likely to stay an active, engaged, happy person. Sure you probably won't be able to do a turkish drop or a berber walk but you'll be healthier than if you just sat on the couch and stared at the boobtube. There are people in their sixties doing all sorts of active things now. .
A few years back, I went on Delilah's dance trip to Hawaii and there were a couple of 70-something beginners there. Were they the best dancers there? No. But they sure had a good time, met some new friends and maybe even learned a few things.
How many people spend $700 on Lladro or Precious Moments figurines or other "stuff?"

Re: How much do I invest?
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 10:42 AMi stopped trying to justify what i spend on this a while ago...i raised three kids and pinched pennies a long time. now they are all grown, and it is TIME FOR ME! it is lots of fun, and we meet great women, and get to wear fun stuff, and sometimes even shock people! that's just stuff money can't buy! and yeah, today i feel kinda sore from practicing two hours yesteday AND going to my class, but seriously, i prolly would have been achy anyway! and i don't really want to think about how much i did spend on it all (so far!) -

Re: How much do I invest?
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 1:33 PMJust remember that it is wonderful to have all the beautiful items that we adorn ourselves with...and workshops make excellent fellowships....but the pure magic...the pure joy....the pure spirit that makes you who you are....is in the dance itself. That is priceless! I just wish my boobs were bigger...grrrr.

Re: How much do I invest?
Sat, November 1, 2008 - 8:56 AMGreat post!
I believe we should invest in our well-being. It's important. Do as much as you can afford to. In my experience I've seen older dancers really blossom in their dance in a way I can't put words to. It's really lovely. I've also seen a wonderful "Mrs Robinson" sort of thing in a way that only a woman of a certain vintage can evoke. Keep on dancing Zina. Please keep blazing a trail for others such as myself who are just a wee bit younger and appreciate the heroines ahead of us.

Re: How much do I invest?
Sat, November 1, 2008 - 11:33 AMApparently, I shouldn't even question this. I went to Neiman Marcus in Chicago a couple of days ago and one of the makeup artists said, "Let me freshen you up." I ended up dropping $350 on makeup. But dang! She made me look good! :)

Re: How much do I invest?
Sat, September 19, 2009 - 12:27 PMI teach 3 classes a week, I belong to 2 dance troupes including one that performed last year for part of the Celebrations of the European City of Culture.
I'm 62 ..that doesn't disbar me from employment ( I am not self-employed ut work for local colleges) as a dance teacher nor from performing therefore I have to invest in training myself, keeping up to date with my dancing and buying dance costumes for the troupe. I rarely do solos these days, too busy with organising, editing a magazine, going to workshops and troupe dancing.
Admittedly I do not have the salary now I am retired , I am on occupational and state pensions but apart from enjoying what I do, my 87 year old mum said..keep on doing what you love for as long as you can...you'll one day be sitting in your chair watching the TV unable to get about ...make it later rather than sooner. -

Re: How much do I invest?
Sat, September 19, 2009 - 6:32 PMI forgot about this thread..... but after reading it a year ago, i registered a business. when i did my taxes for 2008, i added up my belly dance costs [for the bills i still had....] and it came to over $3500 spent on BD in one year. That sure popped my eyeballs. BUT, it was good to find out, and to see WHERE I had spent the money. It made me take stock of my willy-nilly spending in thrift stores. I still spend a lot on classes/workshops, but to me, it is worth every penny, and now I can write them off. Also, I helped another dancer teach her classes. Now I am starting to teach my own Beginner level classes. Even if I don't make huge amounts of money at this business, what I do make will offset some of my expenses, and so will the tax right offs.
Carolena and Megha are coming to Vancouver in January to do GS/TT, and I was the first person to sign up... $775 for 4 days [20 hrs]... not going to do the TT just yet. I am still hoping to head to SF next summer, and try to link up to another GS/TT course somewhere between the border and SF [or somewhere close to SF].... and then I will go spend a week taking classes at FCBD Studio prior to heading to the GS/TT... that's the plan.
Meanwhile, I am taking 4 classes a week, plus any workshops that are relevant to what I want to do ~ ATS, and an ATS based Fusion.
One should always ask themselves, "And if I stopped dancing, what would that do to the quality of my life?"
I don't smoke. I don't drink. I don't go out clubbing. I rarely go out to movies, or rent them. I do eat out more than I should, but I am trying to curb that habit. I buy clothes for myself once in a while, and usually always at consignment places, or thrift stores.... or the mega sales at Winners. So really, what else do I have to spend my money on? And it is almost the only thing that maintains my well-being, other than my wee animals.
Not that I am advocating putting yourself into the poor house over Belly Dancing, but if you died tomorrow, Goddess forbid, would it matter how much you'd spent the last year, or two, or three, on belly dancing? NOPE. :D

Re: How much do I invest?
Sun, September 27, 2009 - 12:04 PMthe question really isn't how much do you invest in dance, but rather "how much do I invest in myself and my happiness?" I say INVEST. You will be smiling, happy AND will have the added benefit of learning to dance and having fabulous costumes to wear.

Re: How much do I invest?
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 8:29 PMyes, rhi has born witness to SOME of Jazzies belly dance stuff...... and it was ridiculous... of course, i have NO room to talk here about ridiculous, just ask my daughter ;) and i didn't even see it all.... yoiks :D
but i can totally understand that when you have limited cash flow, you must make choices. that is why, right now, while i am working [and still can't really afford my extravagances with dance] i am doing as much as i can, because one day i will be limited, in more than monetary ways.
figure out what are the priorities and work towards those that are dearest to you... then get to the other ones :)

Re: How much do I invest?
Mon, September 28, 2009 - 10:56 AMI can identify with the concern. I am older (65) been belly dancing about 8 years, and am totally hooked. However, I'm retired, have a limited amount of money to spend on lessons, costumes, et al. I have yet another passion, that being horses and horseback riding. Am currently looking for someone who needs their horse excercised lightly, and having a good response to that quest. I have to constantly balance the two expenses. In fact, I'm on a sabbatical from my Eygptian dance class, due to low funds. Been doing drop in at the Tribal classes nearby -- but may have to choose! GRRRRR. I try and follow my heart, but stay fiscally respondsible too --- sometimes the two don't gel -- LOL. Oh yeah, and did I mention golf? -

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 1:25 PMMarianna, it sounds as though you understand completely what I originally asked. Feel good and all that stuff is good but when the money is limited a person just has to make the choice. Your response was funny...the way you mentioned gold at the end pure gold! z -
