A series called Shymmy will be showing on Fit tv. Apparently it airs on Tuesday nights but I saw two episodes tonight. I will be interested to hear what others think of the techniques being shown.

  • I've seen the tail end of one of the programs. Ack! It comes on at the wierdest times here. I checked the cable company lineup (online) and couldn't find a *set* schedule. It's almost like they use it as a filler......

But I'm still going to keep an eye out. I'm curious as to what they will teach.
    • I wonder why they would demonstrate a dance in a dirty, wet tunnel with flashing lights? Or an empty mall...very weird.
      • ????
        • Anyone who GETS FitTV gonna post a clip or two to YouTube? Let us know...I'd be VERY curious to see!

          • I believe the show was shat and filmed here in Vancouver ,Canada....

it features some of our local gals here in vancouver and we are all very proud of the hard work that went into the show....

here is a thread from Vancouver BD tribe.....

            tribes.tribe.net/vancouver...b571acc033

and yeah its a shame its on at such weird times!!!
            • It does seem clear that they are for real belly dancers and know what they're doing. They have that line on either side of their tummies rather than the 6 pack or flat tummy.
          • I have never done anything like that but i will try. Tivo or the various copies of Tivo that work on the different satelite or cable vendors is wonderful for catching and recording these kinds of things. Mine is all set to record all the first run episodes, whenever they run. I will download to a dvd, then see if i can change it to a format that YouTube will accept.. Is doing such a thing legal??
          • I'm dead curious. I know people who auditioned for that show. When they approached my teacher about auditions they made a big deal about not wanting a pack of skinny white girls....and of the 8 girls who went over, only two were skinny white girls...guess who got callbacks? The skinny white girls. Though both of them are fabulous dancers.
            • okay i was ready to upload.. but i lost my nerve because there were all these warnings about copyright laws. I know other people do it.. but with my luck, i would be the one they would choose to make and example. i'm chicken..
      • Have you watched anything else on FitTV? They seemed to have started doing that kind of thing with all their shows. But the other shows tend to be pool side, on the beach on a roof top. I think it artistically looks cook..but distracting.
  • I have been watching, and dancing, along with it since I haven't been able to attend class this session. I actually really like it. The dancers are talented and the steps are easy to follow. And while it is targeted at a beginner level audience I have learned some new ways to do old technique. I think that the scheduled night for them is tuesday and then its repeated through out the week. Thank goodness for Tivo :) I also heard that they will be releasing a dvd soon.
    • I've really enjoyed watching the show and dancing along. It's more like a practice session than a "class" per se. The sets are gorgeous too! They put me in the mood to dance.

I don't know what to say about the "skinny white girls" because even my husband commented (cause he's been dvr-ing them for me and watching along with) -- "Oh they got actual women to dance for them."
(in contrast to a certain big live production that he said contained too many "sticks")

I too have learned some new ways to do things, or new combinations I hadn't thought of before.
  • its the playboy of bellydance. I can't take it seriously at all and the narrator is HORRIBLE.
    • I agree with you Zira -
I've seen 3, and it's fun to watch, just to see the different locations, which are certainly creative!! And the dancers are very graceful & beautiful. But - truthfully, I really didn't think much of it.
It seems to me like a "bellydance show" masquerading as an instructional segment. It's NOT geared to beginners - rather, it reminds me of how bad teachers teach - they don't know how to break things down for beginners, so they just teach "to their own level".

However! IF it leads to more students coming to class, GREAT! But I feel sorry for those who try it & learn bad technique or decide "it's too hard" & give up, OR WORSE, mistakenly think they can actually belly dance from following that show!!!
    • I sooo agree with you! I don't like the way the film the dancers and the freestyle at the end just seems to hoochie! I have had several beginner dancers tell me that they couldn't follow along..... it really does seem to be more for people who already have some ecperience....
  • I have been with the show from day one and love it.....Here in New York it airs Tuesday nights at 8 to 9 and Sunday nights from 9pm to 10...The show is on many times durring the week...It dosen't matter when it's on for me cause I'm alway's dancing someplace or teaching other dance styles so I tape it and veiw it when I have time...I love the show.....I have gotton better from the show I have had questions answeres by veiwing the show and for the first time I was told I look like a belly dancer...So the show has been very helpful to me....It also has made many people interested in the dance that our local gym has added a class......But I still like the show better as the movements are broken down and the gym well it takes a lot for a good teacher....From what I understand a DVD will be out Dec1 www.shimmy.tv/07....http:.../shimmy.html www.namaste.tv/yoga.html www.shimmy.tv/ let me know what you think
  • I like the show, for a solo dancer like me, its good to have a break in routine and pull away from my Dolphina dvd's.
I enjoy getting new ideas for costumes also, since I love sparkly stuff!!!
  • Thanks for the news. I'm sorry to have missed this. I'll have to keep on the ball now for new and repeat episodes.
    • I've watched the program and it's okay...
I think that if you already have dance experience you can follow along, but if you are new the movements can be a bit tricky.

There is no breakdown to show how how the move is done. You really don't see waht the feet, knees and other parts are doing to make the move happen. Does that make sense?

And why are they dancing at a water treatment plant?

      Hmm?
      • We don't get it here, but the parts I've seen on the website do have that soft-core porn look to them. Not that the dancers are doing anything that isn't tasteful, it's entirely the settings, lighting and background music. It keeps making me laugh when I'm trying to watch what they're actually doing.
  • I watched a few episodes but they are too beginner level to really keep my interest. I don't think they looked bad, but I was surprised to hear they are really bellydancers... I assumed they were fitness instructors teaching bellydance moves (like on the other fit tv show that sometimes has bellydance. All Star Workouts or something i think its called)
    • The 'All Star Workout- Bellydancing with Aubre' show are DEFINITELY bellydancers! Through and through, it's what we live for, training for, sleep, eat and drink. Any everyone in that show has numerous years of experience in bellydance.
      • Im probably going to be in the minority on this one, but I actually liked the new Shimmy show. The only thing bugging the heck out of me was the constant set changes......but honestly, for me, I dont care where they film it, just so long as its bellydance and I can do it. Just keep the same background lol The moves are sincere, which I appreciated.....I dont feel like Im watching an aerobics instructor who took a few classes and is now doing bellydance shows. I also appreciated what I considered small business support....I believe all the girls are wearing Melodias, and I totally root for and support ANYONE who supports bellydancer-owned small businesses!

Now if they would only put it on as a whole 'bellydance hour' with Aubre's show (and for the record, Aubre, you NEED your own darn show!!!) All Star Workouts is great, but seriously.....its time to break outta there, and get your own regular time slot every day!!! Who do I need to write to?????'

        ~Su :)
        • Thanks Sunayna! Drop FitTV an email. =) But I'm working on some other things as well in the meantime.

It is so great to have bellydancing on TV on a regular basis. Hi-FIVE everyone!!!
  • I gave the show a chance because I was actually really excited to see a bellydance show. But I don't really like it. I guess it's okay for people that just want to bellydance to get in shape, but for people that actually know what they're doing or want to know what they're doing, it's horrible. I've seen some of those girls do things wrong or in ways that my teacher has told me to definitely not do. And if it actually is for true beginners, the instruction isn't that great. They do a lot of moves that I most definitely could not do when I first started and that took me a lot of practice to get right. How are people supposed to learn these things in one half-hour block (with commercials) and not hurt themselves by doing it wrong?
    • As a beginner in a very rural environment, i like it as another source of information along with several dvds, a teacher i get to work with once a year or so and her videos on YouTube. Certainly there are moves i can't do, but it gives me ideas of things to work towards.. And if it hurts me.. i don't do it.
  • It's *really* wonderful to see bellydance on tv on a regular basis, with beautiful dancers who dance well representing "us."

Unfortunately, I tend to agree with those that have voiced their concerns regarding the inclusion of rather difficult (for novices) movements and, additionally, a lack of instructional time. I suppose, though, when you're trying to reach a relatively small market it's hard to do a show that will suit everyone's tastes. Too bad that the instruction can't explain a bit better which movements should be attempted by those new to the dance and which are more suitable to intermediate and above dancers.

I found this link, btw, describing the "top 10 movements" in bellydance as according to Shimmy.

    health.discovery.com/converg...ves.html

I found it very interesting that absolute bare-bones, basic movements such as a hip bump, slide, and twist are not included as are many chest/ribcage movements. Not sure how they picked their top 10...but I hope it wasn't based on which movements are suitable for beginners!
  • I like it. Of course it won't take the place of the teaching dvds. And I do find the constant changing background disconcerting, it is a good show to at least get people interested and beginning. Maybe a few couch potatoes or parent's who don't have any alone time except late, will take it as an opportunity to get up and dance a little. If only in their living room.
  • I've been watching the show whenever I get a chance, and apart from the different names for some moves and the constant background changes, I rather enjoy it. I've picked up a few moves I didn't know.
    • I'm up in the air about Shimmy. I watched/danced an episode with a friend. While I liked the high quality footage, the switch in locations and received a decent workout. Certain parts did seem simple or too ludicrous such as their attempt to incorporate 'dance sign language' signifying 'curvy woman' with 'long flowing hair'. Plus, as someone already mentioned, while dancing by a running escalator in an empty mall or by a underground pool beneath a sparking welder might seem visually exciting, they also seemed a bit real world dangerous :) And, yes, one of the dancers did have a 'real' body, but the other 2 had me running for my abmaster :) Either way, it's bellydance in the mainstream & that makes me happy -
