Music editing

It seems I remember someone once saying something about a free music editing software you can download that enables you to alter music, but I can't recall what/where it was. I have several songs I might want to dance to, but the length cannot be more than 3 minutes. Some of the songs are longer than that, so I wondered if it's possible to shorten them. Can anyone tell me how I can do this?? Thanks! :)

I've used Audacity to shorten songs, and also to pick out parts and loop them for practice. Give yourself some time to work it through, and you'll do fine.

May I ask which version of Audacity you're using? I checked out the link and there is a 1.2.6 version that appears to be older and a beta 1.3.9. It appears as though the beta has some bugs fixed but it makes me a little nervous.

I know the question isn't directed to me, but I'm using 1.3.9. with no issues. No promises, esp. as I tend to use it on a different OS than Windows, but unless you're doing seriously complex editing, I think it's fine.

I'm also using 1.3.9 and like it. There have been less twitches than on older versions. I've used Audacity for a couple years and the older versions tended to crash a lot. The newest one only weirds out every once in a great while...although I've still retained my habit of saving often when involved in more complicated projects. Go Audacity! (I love free stuff!)

if anyone has a mac garage band can put your set into one track, cut out skips, shorten a song, add silence, overlap songs so they fade into each other, all VERY easily. (once you figure out how to open a song in it, a monkey could do the rest ^_~)
it comes with the computer, so if you have a mac, then you're all set (of course your speakers have probably exploded already, so you might not be able to hear what you're doing ^_~)

I use Garage Band too, it came free with my mac, I find it really good - simple and easy to work and effective! (And if you have kids, they will love all the loops that can be used to make up your own songs! ;-))
