Cross-posted from my topic on "Bellydance Health," for those who are experiencing deja vu right now...thought I might get just as many wonderful answers here!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been working on my splits lately, the ultimate goal being to be able to do both the centered splits (this is my top priority -- splits with a leg on either side of you) and the side splits (where you have one leg in front of you and one leg behind). Having never been able to do them before, I'm sure it will take quite a while to stretch out the necessary muscles without pulling anything, but I was just curious about a couple things...
1) What do you feel is the best stretch or exercise that will lead me into being able to do splits comfortably?
2) How long did you have to do this stretch before you were able to achieve splits all the way to the floor?
3) Does being able to do the centered splits make isolating the glutes easier, as shown in many instructional bellydance DVDs?
I appreciate you guys' help on this...can't wait to hear responses!

Re: X-posted: Can you do the splits? Tell me how you learned!
Mon, October 12, 2009 - 7:31 PMi dunno about doing splits, but it took me 4 years of stretching before karate to be able to touch my toes. it can be very slow.
good luck! -

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 4:01 AMLuckily, I'm not a total flexibility noob...I've been able to touch my toes for a while, and I can do a forward bend almost to the point that my nose touches my knees. Even though that works a whole different range of muscles, I know what you mean. I plan on it taking a while, but I have no idea how long it normally takes, and I want to know when I can expect to reach the final goal. I need something to work toward! :-) -

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 5:04 AMif you stretch regularly, pushing teeny bit more each time it will happen before you know it.
I use callanetics stretches.I started getting back into them last night.having a stretching routine each night before I go to bed.
good luck with your goal :) -

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 11:55 AMYeah, I know a regular stretching routine is crucial. I just want to hear (from people who are already able to do splits comfortably) what stretches they recommend to produce the best and fastest results. -

Re: X-posted: Can you do the splits? Tell me how you learned!
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 2:33 PMI'm so close after working on it for over a year and what helped me the most was doing yoga. Specifically doing the workup for monkey pose (splits). Yogatoday.com has great hour long yoga sessions and two of the instructors Adi and Neesha do a whole workup to the final monkey pose and I can sit on the floor on one side. I don't know why I can't get the other side. If I skip a week for whatever reason though I have to work back up to it. Baby steps--easy and gentle as you go. Center spilts may never happen for me but after I'm good and warm from a workout I lay on my back with my butt against the wall with my legs straight up. I just let them gently slide open down the wall and I lay there for about 5 min. I have noticed that each week my legs go a lil farther. Good luck and I would suggest not putting a time frame on it or try to get it quickly--not exactly an area you want a tear. Yikes. -

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 3:59 AMYeah, I know it's going to take a while. I was planning on 6 months at the very fastest.
That's a mighty fine suggestion you've got there...I'll definitely be looking at Yogatoday.com. Appreciate the input!
