Pelvic lock squares- help

topic posted Sun, May 4, 2008 - 4:40 PM by  Drea
Hi all-
When doing this movement, I have trouble getting a dramatic release to the back. The front and both sides are sharp, but the back is way too soft.
Does anyone have any tips to crating a sharp release to the back? I'm thinking it might be beause when I do squares, for some reason my hip flexors tense up when I flex my glutes.
Thanks!

Depends on the hip square technique you're using. The Suhaila method uses low back muscles to have the sharp contraction to the back -- it's not a release. This muscle is a bit tricky to find and it's very easy to overdo it if you don't know what muscle you should be using and how *small* the move is supposed to be. The best thing I can suggest is to get personal hands-on (literally!) feedback from one of the Suhaila School instructors...

Okay, thank you. I am going to one of her workshops on July, so I'll ask the instructor.
My teacher is Suhaila certified as well, but I still haven't been able to achieve the move fully.
I am concerned about contracting my lower back that sharply. I've had lower back problems in the past. So maybe I need to work on my lower back strength in order to get that kind of movement in it?
I know this is a hard question to ask on a message board! :)

see, it's not a big movement. it's pretty subtle, but it is in the lower back. start out very very small. basically, if you were to put your hands on your hips like a petulant child, it's where your thumbs are touching your back. very very very very small.

And sometimes going back to just drilling your pelvic locks first in a strong, isolated, and percussive way can help maintain that sharp quality in the square after. It's is a difficult one, especially if you've had lower back issues in the past. Don't over do it, and as mentioned keep it small.
