Why am I so dizzy???

topic posted Sun, June 22, 2008 - 12:32 AM by  TrueLeah
I have a serious problem with being to dizzy when I dance. I love to spin around when I dance and 9 years ago when I danced continuously I didn't have this problem. Especially during my veil part when I have to contunuously spin to keep the veil flying. I have experience in dancing, and I know how to spot when I spin. This isn't the problem. Even though I spot I still loose my balance and almost fall! What can I do to help this??

It may be an inner ear problem. Water in the ear canal can cause dizzyness.

Another could be where you are spotting.. When I was younger I would spot in the distance.. now I need something closer. Also.. 3 reps one way..then reverse for at least one - that puts the breaks on the spinning.

    hope this helps

Yes, it might be the inner ears (had any diving accidents lately?) or it might be something to do with your blood circulation- very low or high blood pressure, heart trouble, anemia, that kind of thing. It could even be due to heavy dieting, hard to say since we don't know how you live. Try looking at your hand while you spin.

Got allergies? My sinuses get all wacky when there's something blooming that I'm allergic to. That can cause me to get the dizzies too as blocked up sinuses, at least in my own head, can lead to ear problems. Just a thought.

(PS)... one trick I learned from an instructor is when you come out of a set of spins and you're feeling a case of the "dizzies," just hold out your hand, posed nicely of course, and look at it. For some reason, focusing your gaze at finger-length seems to help pull you out of the dizzies. It works for me. Give it a try!

ditto ditto ditto. i have all of the above and haven't been able to spin without getting dizzy. i can't go more than an inch under water without my ears hurting either. check with a doc if you have post nasal drip, or any other signs of sinus problems, and if you do consider an anti-cogestiant(sp?) if it's not your sinuses then get your ears looked at. something that came on when you didn't have problems before should be looked at, and they might be able to do something for you (cleaning them out, anti-biotics which-need-to-be-compleatly-finished-even-if-you-feel-better.... something)

Yes to all of the above. But if you have a checkup and all is normal, then another trick is to keep your head upright when spinning. Tilting the head or whipping the neck around is asking for trouble. For what it's worth, the more you spin, the easier it becomes.

    second everything said.
and yes, you can try looking at your hand while spinning, if you aren't moving it much (compared to your body). focusing on it, not the swirling background, can definitely help.
also, keep yourself straight, vertical, and spin as much on the spot as possible. the point being to keep your head on an axis. taking your head off the axis by bending over (even slightly) or 'traveling' will just worsen dizziness.

yes everything said is excellent info

also try when spinning halfway through changing purposely the foot stance.. wider for a larger base o fsupport.. it may slwo the spin bu tthe result of beign stable with no dizzy feelingis what you want

or just stop in a logn spin and do a head cover maneuver to break the spin up and then elegantly and purposefully go back to it

breaking the spin is a good idea.

also forgot to mention, when you come out of a spin, you can spin shortly in the opposite direction, i've always found that helped too.

One trick I've been taught for not falling over (doesn't help with the dizziness---in my experience the only thing that helps with that is constant training, going back and forth, back and forth, and building up tolerance)... when you stop spinning (or even while you're still going, tho it's a bit harder), pay attention to your feet. Feel the weight, and make sure it's distributed evenly across the balls of your feet and your heels, and the same on both feet. Ignore the wheeling world around you, and focus on how your weight is sitting over your feet, and you can stay upright.

I've had the same problem, and I have TERRIBLE balance.

One thing that you can do that really helps is to unwind. Spin in one direction, then change to the other direction. There is a fluid that sits in the bottom of your inner ear, and that's what your brain uses to recognize where "down" is. When you spin, that fluid sloshes out toward the side, so your brain gets confused about where "down" is (since your feet and your eyes are giving a different answer). Changing the direction of your spin pushes the fluid back towards it's neutral position.

    Tips:
    - be sure to make the change when you're facing the audience (otherwise it looks sloppy)
    - be sure to allow enough rotations to fully unwind: I find that I need about half as many "unwinds" as "wind-ups" (i.e., if I do 8 spins in one direction, it takes 4 to unwind enough to not be really unstable). That said, doing the same number in both directions is a nice symmetry.

One trick I was taught was to give a little hop or jump and the end of the spin.
You can just come up onto the toes and percussively back down onto the heel. It's supposed to settle the fluid in your ears back down to the bottom.

Yes, I can attest to this! If you work on it, eventually you can accomplish it without it being noticeable, or you could integrate it into your dance.
