Hi all,
Here is a clip of the tribal fusion solo I just did at a benefit performance in June this year. Any constructive feedback is greatly appreciated! I know I have a nervous hand "flip" issue that I'm working on being more conscious of but any help would be awesome :) This is really only the second solo I've done (I almost always dance in troupe!) so hit me with anything...every little bit helps!

Thanks!

Tue, July 7, 2009 - 10:57 AMVery very pretty! You are fluid and also get some nice accents in there too. I've been dealing with the hand flippy issue too, that just takes time and gaining confidence with your movements and arm placement. Some great advice I got recently was about utilizing my entire space. Putting my arms out there like I mean it, looking out at the audience to really connect with them as well as being intentional about the moments where I bring the energy in to myself.
Kudos on your second solo performance! I look forward to seeing more :-) -

Thu, July 9, 2009 - 6:01 PMyour stage presence and movements are fantastic! you must have been studying very hard! I couldn't see the whole thing (stupid yt) but for your layback and drop, I noticed your shoulder blades were 'pointing'. I don't know if you need to lower your upper sternum more or set your elbows higher and farther from your body? Your drop was SO smooth and slinky! Loved it! Keep it up!

Sat, July 25, 2009 - 3:44 PMJen! Lovely job! First things first I think it was awesome that you were dancing for an autism benefit! I also loved your music and your costume was to die for!
What I noticed was that you don't engage with the audience. There's a way to look at the audience and then there's a way to look at the audience and draw them in to what you're doing. Even if you're completely nervous think about keeping your eyes up and direct. I thought your movements were great but that your face didn't match your moves. I am also totally guilty of this, it's those silly nerves! For me watching ballet videos (especially pas de deuxs) are great ways to watch facial emotion. I can also see you anticipating some of your movements which is pretty common with most dancers. You just have to feel the music more, which might sound a bit ridiculous but is true.
I also wanted to say that you did a lovely job spotting your turns at the end. Overall I was think it was an awesome performance especially since it was only your second solo. And I didn't even notice your flippy hand. :) -

Sun, July 26, 2009 - 11:09 PMThank you for the compliments...that benefit was definitely a very worthy cause so it was alot of fun!
Thanks for the advice, ladies :) I have a quesiton though...I usually don't have trouble engaging the audience but that stage was SO bright that I couldn't see past the edge of the stage. Any advice on how to engage the audience when you can't see them? That really caught me off guard so that certainly didn't help my panicked facial expression when I turned around and couldn't see anyone ;) -

Tue, July 28, 2009 - 9:03 AMI've not had this yet with dancing, but I know how you feel about the disconnection with the lights...the best thing to do is just look out and across them to the areas where you 'know' the audience is at and it should help...in fact, I find that a bit easier, in that you seem to be looking at people from their point of view, but not being able to see them in turn keeps you from feeling like you've singled someone out and made 'them' nervous, which can make you feel even 'more' nervous...make any sense?

Tue, August 11, 2009 - 1:44 AMI´ve already seen this and liked it but only now, after Rachel´s workshop about backbends, did I notice that you bend only in the lower back. You should bend the spine in its entire length, not just in one part. This could cause you back problems later. You should start by lifting your chest as high as you can and as you lower backwards, keep lifting your chest. Watch some Rachel´s laybacks. -
