Here's a solo I recently performed. Please ignore the lame watermark. What do you like, what don't you like? The beginning has a burlesque-y feel and then end is a drum section from Suhaila's Scheherezade.
Thanks!

Re: Tribal Fusion Solo-- be brutal!
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 3:20 PMI want to start off by saying that I am definitely NOT a tribal dancer so many of the things that tribal dancers do intentionally sometimes look unintentional to me, so please forgive my ignorance to your style, if I exhibit it.
I don't usually like belly dance/ burlesque, but I really enjoyed the first piece. Your playful nature lightened it a bit and took away what sometimes comes across wrong. Very cute and flirty...not a bit trampy. Are you aware that you transition with a little kick. I see many tribal dancers do this so it may be intentional, but just in case. The tribal back bend and drop...gorgeous!!! The transition back up to standing, smooth and fluid...lovely!!!
I think your strengths lay in the slow smooth movements, but some of your quick combinations in the second piece seem a bit "cut-off", if you will. I would just say be mindful that even quick movements get finished all the way through the rhythm and all the way through the body. I would also say that the beginning of the second piece is a bit spastic; you are moving very quickly from one move to the next, but no one move seems finished. As soon as you settled into a combination it seemed to tighten back up again. Was any of this improv? You didn't seem committed to the beginning sequence of the second number.
Also, are you aware that you accent locks with bent hands, sometimes it looks great and works but other times it seems odd. Again, I see many tribal dancers do this so it may also be intentional. I would just make sure that you watch the video again and see if you are really accenting the lock or if the hand gestures have become a crutch.
All-in-All I would say very well done. Well conceptualized, well executed; just a bit of polish to shine it up.
By the way, I don't have a video of my latest choreo, but as soon as I do I will post it here and you can tell me what you think....Fair warning; I am a sparkle girl through and through.

Re: Tribal Fusion Solo-- be brutal!
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 5:09 PMI couldn't agree more with Melodi. I LOVED the first piece--the second was GOOD but some moves seemed unfinished and a little frantic. You are a great dancer Megan, how could we be 'brutal?' I know it's a figure of speech, but it kind of knocked me back. To me, this is the flipside of using critique to elevate our dance form. No brutality necessary.
Sorry I digressed.

Re: Tribal Fusion Solo-- be brutal!
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 6:17 PMThank you both for your critiques! The whole thing was improv, and I appreciate the comments about not finishing my moves and moving spastically... I totally see what you mean...
Yikes... brutal does come off harsh, doesn't it? It's kinda a family expression. What I SHOULD have said is that I pride myself on being good at accepting criticism, so nitpicky critiques all the way to flat out "I don't like your style" I can usually handle. I sometimes am worried to critique people because I don't want to come off as a bitch. What it should have said is "be honest, I can handle it!"
Sorry that came off so intense :)
