If anyone made any rude comments about your weight- I'd be very surprised.

I thought you looked lovely! And as I'm no officianado...(sp??) I can't comment on your actual performance- but I will say one suggestion....You shimmy beautifully- but you needed something to more accent it- it was the only thing that stuck out in my mind....

      Thanks Amara!
Yes, there were a couple of nasty youtube comments on my weight which I deleted.
But thank you again for the kind comment.

I can't watch your video right now because I'm at work, but don't let the idiots on Youtube get you down. People can really be meanspirited sometimes for no good reason. You are beautiful!

I'm going to take a second and look at the clip, but I suggest moderating the comments when you post a clip of yourself on youtube. There are a lot of a**holes out there and they don't deserve the opportunity to comment on your work.

As far as weight goes, I'll never discourage somebody from trying to be their healthiest best self, but I do not think you need to be really skinny to be a great dancer and a pleasure to watch.

You have a beautiful and tasteful costume that really suits you. There is a nice quality to your movements as well.

I'm going to suggest a couple of things, one, especially when you are working with recorded music, even if you are improvising, try to know your music backwards and forwards. You missed some great accents and were slow on a couple of the changes, which I would forgive more if you were working with live music, but since this appeared to be CD, I would have liked to have seen you hit those.

At the beginning I would have like to have seen a little more hip and a little less chest with the accents, but that's just a matter of my personal taste. Some of you accents could be sharpened, more staccato, but your umis and choo-choo shimmies were really nice. It seemed like most the dance was done in place (I'm often at the other extreme myself). I would have liked to see more traveling steps and I would have liked to have seen you circle the stage at least once.

This is a great beledi taksim danced by Mona Said:

    www.youtube.com/watch

She really masterfully starts subtle and in place with really staccato hip-work, then she starts doing a really rhythmic traveling step, nothing to complicated at first, then she works her way up. If you don't own the original video this clip is from you should hunt it down and get it. It's got some really great stuff on it that I think will give you some great material for your beledi taksim. I highly recommend stealing her moves. I think they would suit you.

I like how you incorporated level changes. I do think you might have held out until the end to pull out the choo-choo shimmy. I would have put a different exciting traveling step in instead of the earlier choo-choo shimmy. I liked how you put your hands in your hair at the beginning, some times your hands seem a little uncertain, but when they know where they are going, they are nice.

I love Mona!! I used to own that vid, but never got it back after loaning it to someone. My instructors in the past have been highly influenced by her, and agree that her overall style usits me well, or in general.
Yeah, I know I missed a lot of the accents. Last minute music choice. I had been sick for a month , and still did not think I would make it that evening., as I still felt very weak. Since I was out of it, I did not want a grandiose Orientale, but still no excuse for missing important musical accents.
Thanks for the comments and I will take them seriously.

I think you have a gorgeous body, so don't let anyone tell you different!

My only critical comment off the bat was that I don't personally encourage larger busted dancers to do bending over moves. "The Girls" are already pretty up and out with us bigger busted gals, and it doesn't translate as demure enough with da tatas! There are just some moves the smaller gals (in stature and/or bustline) can get away with that we look more risque or are just less flattering to do. In this case I am referring specifically to the first bending over move you did, where you came up rolling your shoulders.

For big hip circles, may I recommend gently crossing your arms over your bosom as you rotate to the back. I actually prefer this on all dancers, big or small, as it looks graceful and ladylike. And it keeps us from looking like the focus of the move is on showing our cleavage and keeps the focus on the hip circle.

I thought you had some great hand and arm gestures--really framing the movement you wanted the audience to appreciate. But I think sometimes your arms overall lacked the control and intention that would have made them polished. Remember that arms want to go all over the place! But letting them be still, rest, flow more slowly from one place to the next will make sure that they don't overwhelm your dancing and distract from your intended movement.
For instance at 2:12 you have this flirtatious look over the shoulder, and your right hand up by your cheek. When you start shimmying, you kinda drop your arms and they aren't really doing much to add to the change in the movement. I would recommend keeping your hand right there at the cheek and looking down at your hip to redirect attention to the shimmy, but while keeping the sweetly coquettish arm position. I hope that makes sense.

Remember your hands! Sometimes they were pretty flat at the end. Other times they were starkly extended. Somewhere in between is the ideal. But this is a common issue we all struggle with as we move through our dance life--you're not alone! Just think of any arm movement as also a hand and finger movement--move that energy aaaall the way out the ends of your fingers!

When you smiled it was infectious. :)

Your weight? Sweetie, you have beautiful figure, so work it! I loved your performance, and your expression shoed that you were having fun.

I'd have to ditto the previous comment about the bending over moves. I'm a bigger girl myself, and I feel like some of the bending moves accentuate, err, "rolls" for lack of a better term. ;) But hey, we're all a work in progress, and every body type has its own challenges.

My only critical comment off the bat was that I don't personally encourage larger busted dancers to do bending over moves

Absolutely! My original teacher always taught me that if you're going to fold down then you need to lead with an upright chest with the drop being at the last minute. You don't want to linger going down and then you roll your body up. I'd leave out the rolling shoulders as well. And in reference to larger busted dancers (cuz I am one) that bra looked dangerously close to spilling boobage quite a few times. I'd say a bra with more coverage would be better. Or maybe higher up on the bust mound but with a plunging cleavage. I just know that my eyes got reeeeal wide a few times. Costuming wise, great color on you but I don't know if I like the side split skirt on you. My jury is still out.

What I'm seeing is solid moves interspersed between what I refer to as "noodling." Even if you're doing improve, stick those moves. I liked it. And people who talk about your weight need to be boiled in oil.

I agree with Shems on the hands.. most of the time they are fine.. but sometimes it is like you do not know what to do with them.

I am going to "nit pick" on 2 things ;-)

The BANGy thing... I do not like how that it hanging down in your face. I liked when you flipped your hair up and it stuck in your headband...then it was out of your face =-)

and on your left hip..looks like a tag or something ? what is that ?

over all good dancing, great smile. It's ok to not hit all the beats. That is the difference between American Caberet and Egyptian. You hit some good points and got a reaction from the crowd.

Hey Jody. I'm a big fan of your dancing. I love your subtlety and elegance, and you look beautiful. (I have the same costume in royal blue)! I really enjoyed this clip. You seem to have a large vocabulary of movements, your technique is good, and you have outstanding stage presence.

I agree with most of what Shems has said, so I won't echo her. I will add though, that I think you need to work on your posture a bit. We all have different body shapes and because of your build, I think you have to take extra care to stand very tall and bring your shoulders down.

The bent-over tush-push seemed out of place to me and I felt the hitting of the accents to be predictable. You could add different accents to keep it spicy... for example, just stand there and raise your brows on the accent, drop to the floor (ie a knee-together squat of sorts, not suggesting floorwork here), a chest accent (you know, like those little drama queen heaves).

You could incorporate more ribcage into your dancing (ie. sways) as well as dance to the rise and fall of the melody. (ie reach up with your arms and look up... look down at your hips, etc).

I disagree with the comment made earlier about hiding your cleavage. Work it, baby!

You're brave to post this here. It's tough hearing criticism. I did it on Bhuz before though, and it was invaluable.

People can be so vile and disgusting. I hope you dont take any of those harsh comments to heart.

Nice, I mean real nice, hourglass figure luv!
I agree with the bangs in face comment above. You had such good stage face, why hide behind those long strands?

I (as a costumer) feel your top isnt well-fitted. It appears that (and many many women do this) your cups are too small and the band is too big (right around the 3:50 or so mark you can see the back riding up). Most women do not realize their chest carriage is smaller than it is and the breasts are bigger. Getting fitted by a real, honest to goodness bra expert is the best thing to do!
I also agree about the bending fw rule of thumb. Keep the chest lifted high so as not to offer the full cleavage shot.
And eff those very negative people posting that tripe.

Thanks to all for the new comments. I would have responded sooner, but had no idea there were more comments. Although I do appreciate and agree with most of the critiques, there are a couple things I wish to comment on myself.
As for the white tag, have no idea where that came from. Just got stuck there in the dressing room.
Bangs; They just fall out of the headband after awhile. This was the 2nd part of a performance. Maybe I will post the first part for any further comments.
Bra-I was not in danger of spilling out. That bra is very tightly fitted. A bit small, but have no choice. I custom order them, and I am stuck. Cant return them and vendors usually only carry smaller sizes in stock. That is the breaks. I have accepted this. I have lost a lot of money the last year on costumes that did not fit and had to sell at a loss. I am ecstatic with a reasonably good fit. I have to sell or return three custom orders and two online purchases due them being too small.
As for showing cleavage: Why not? It is my best feature. I do not believe in avoiding bending over or shoulder rolls cuz of a larger chest. I understand and appreciate anyone who was taught otherwise or feels uncomfortable with cleavage, but I believe Egyptian dance allows us to celebrate our "blessings" and I use those moves because I feel them. I cannot omit them. The gut is unsightly , though. I will admit, and it has gone down a bit since then.
Thank yiou again to all and have a great holiday weekend!

for me your dancing was a pleasure to watch - loved the music - and if I may make a comment on your weight, it would be that it doesn't take away from your dancing at all - it's a very nice shape for dancing! I gave all those jerks the thumbs-down.

Can't do a full analysis right now but will try to come back later.
