Would love some feedback on my new solo, performed last week at a studio student hafla:
ca.youtube.com/watch
It's the first time I've peformed it, and it's my second dance solo ever. I've already made a mental list of a number of things to fix and work on, including posture (especially tucking my pelvis more... I have a bit of lumbar lordosis, so I have to be extra-conscious of my posture), drilling so that I can keep that slow hip shimmy going while I do the chest circles, strengthening my backbends, and working on evening out the odd overly-active left wrist/stiff right wrist combo (I think it's that my right wrist is stronger, plus stiff from writing all day, and my left is weaker... also I think my teacher moves her left wrist a lot, and I may have picked up the habit from her).
Thanks!

Re: Feedback on a tribal fusion solo
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 2:40 AMhey, thanks for posting! Overall I thought this was a really strong performance for your second solo. You have solid technique and good posture.
Notes:
*I liked your strong arms, but they were often straight and stiff. Work on making your default arm posture be a bit softer while retaining the nice posture. Let your arms frame what you're body is doing too. But your snake arms were very nice; my only suggestion is to slow them down and really milk it. But they had great shape!
*biggest criticism: NEVER--repeat--NEVER do a backbend with your crotch to the audience. At best, it loses all impact because the audience can't see what you're doing and is an unflattering pose; at worst you are insulting the audience by thrusting your crotch at them. I see that you probably had audience on three sides, in which case you should do the backbend facing back so that the sides see the shape and the front sees your face.
*I see that you move your wrists a lot but I wanted to point out that your hands remained nice and soft without flopping, which is great. The wrist stuff didn't bother me too much, although I agree it's a habit to not get into.
*Undulations...you did many of your undulations facing flat front; I suggest turning to a diagonal in order to show it off. The audience can't see what you're doing otherwise, and if you open the chest slightly to the front while on the diagonal you get a nice twist in the body that makes any move look ten times better.
*try taking much smaller steps while doing Egyptian (I'm thinking specifically of the move after your second backbend); you'll get a much stronger twist in the hip and you'll really be able to move with it.
*musicality...it did seem like you were drilling to the music rather than dancing to it. Pretty much every move was locked into the 4-4 rhythm so there was never really any surprise...I knew that once you started a move, you would do the same move for the next two counts or so. Try paying attention to the melody and the details and not only the core rhythm...have fun with it! Technique is great but find the joy in actually dancing to the music.
Overall I think you did very well...I liked that your costuming was nice and simple and looked very flattering on you. Keep it up--and please post the next one! -

Re: Feedback on a tribal fusion solo
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 8:33 AMThank you so much for the feedback; much of it I've had an inkling of, or had mentioned to me (Ariellah told me to soften my arms, and they are much softer in the video than they were before! So I'll keep working on softening them further), but it's really helpful to have those things confirmed. I debated and debated which direction to do the first large backbend, because usually I do turn sideways or backwards(as you can see, I did in the part I choreographed myself), but it didn't say to in Ariellah's choreography, so I was unsure. Next time I perform it, I think I will turn it maybe sideways the opposite way from the second one.
And that's a great tip about angling the undulations, I wouldn't have thought of that.
I'll try to work on varying the moves with the melody... Most of the piece is set choreography and combos that are not by own, but perhaps I can modify the choreography somewhat to accomplish that.
Thanks again! -

Re: Feedback on a tribal fusion solo
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 10:24 AMGlad I could help. Just remember with those backbends that if you have audience on three sides to be aware of the crotch issue. Obviously if it's just a few folks on each side and the majority at the front that's different...but you know what I'm saying :)
