Critique me...

Hello all, I've been kind of lurking on this tribe, but I wanted to throw out my drum solo for feedback. This is my first full solo choreography, although I've been dancing for a couple of years. I've performed this solo about 5 times at various workshops and shows, and this was the 4th time I'd performed it in Atlanta.

So here are the aspects about it that I noticed:

1) bad arm posture - dropping elbows, chest is caved in at times
2) I had a tendency in this touch my stomach? Don't know what that's about as I don't do it normally
3) hip articulation ain't so hot on some places, it's a pretty athletic choreography, I think I need to build my stamina
4) got crooked on those spins in the finale - would have liked to have been more on the center of the stage
5) bra was not too secure - I know I've been "blessed" (I think it more of a curse) and I didn't tighten the bra before I went on stage, thus I look like I am falling out.

There's probably more, but that's what I can think of at the moment. I am usually a very improv artist if I am not dancing ATS or with Awalim (the dance company I am in) . This solo has been a learning experience for me and I plan to get as much out of it as I can!

Ooooh....I think I remember you from PennSIC. I love your dancing, and this drum solo is no exception...Damn!

This solo is great. Your personality is really captivating, and especially in a drum solo, I think that's incredibly vital. I like the fact that you joke with and respond to the audience...it seems like you had them in the palm of your hand. You have really solid technique too and put a lot of variety in this drum solo.

Critiques...as you say, I'd watch your arm posture. try not to drop into the relaxed "bent arms at the side posture." I think your arms could be a better frame during your spins and turns too. And watch your hands.

I didn't like the kicks. They just felt out of place to me. They do add a certain dynamic level to the solo, bring the energy up, but I'd substitute something else...maybe a level change?. I didn't notice problems with your hip articulation, but I did sometimes want you to let loose a little more with the shimmies, and turn them into full-on, juicy vibrations. Take some time in the solo and really make room for them. You've got the body for it...make 'em salivate. I love the bit where you move into really fast ummis. Fantastic.

Overall, very little to critique. Sure you could tighten bits of it up (couldn't we all tighten bits of everything up?), but I like drum solos better when they're a spontaneous and not over-rehearsed, so I wouldn't push that. I'd love to see some more clips of yours!

For inspiration, here's a clip of my favorite "shimmy-er" in the DC area: www.youtube.com/watch

Your dancing is very fluid and lovely, but despite the tribal style costume, it read "oriental style/cabaret" to me. I found all the tribal "stuff"--the tassels, the coins, the belt, the necklace--distracting from the energy of your dance. I'm one of those people who believes that the dance must match the music must match the costume. I think that if you continue to perform this piece in that costume, work on holding the "tribal style" lift in the elbows, flowing the energy through the hands and fingers, and keeping your chest strong and lifted. You also did some gestures that are not consistent with the tribal costuming - hair tossing, fingertips at the temples, folkloric-style heel bouncing--and this is something to be aware of in your presentation. You have great flexibility and control in your upper back muscles, judging from your chest locks (Bam!! Awesome!), so hold that and make your movements more controlled. HOWEVER, if you choose to do this piece again, I think the way you presented it here was beautiful, so maybe a little "change of packaging" might help complete the aesthetic. This dance reminded me of Aziza of Oregon/Montreal, who is one of my favorite oriental dancers. Her dance, like yours, is fun, energetic, technically polished, and just a joy to watch. Thank you for sharing it.

Yes, I've felt that as well...I'm kind of going through an identity crisis as a dancer, although I feel no reason to choose one style. I do understand your feel about the aesthetic though. If I had it my way, I'd always perform in a simple beledi dress and one or two scarves tied on my hips - that's it! I've studied a lot of Oriental style, and my family is Jordanian so I grew up with that culture, but I also belong to a tribal belly dance company...after 2 years of intense tribal training (including Carolena's GS Certificate) it's hard for me to "settle" into one style. Someone referred to this choreo as an "Egyptian/ Tribal fusion" and I guess I can't hide my roots, lol.

Thanks for the review and can't wait to see you at TribalCon!!!

Hehe... it's ok! I think that if you do this drum solo again, the beledi dress would be absolutely PERFECT. It would integrate both the oriental and tribal aesthetics you are demonstrating. And i'm not sure we ever settle into ONE style, so don't pressure yourself into choosing one or the other.... just make sure that your aesthetic is complete for whichever style you choose to perform on any given day. :)

I'm looking forward to meeting you too!

I commented on Youtube, you're awesome. Are you coming to Scotland with Awalim in October this year? If yes I'm really looking forward to the workshops!

Thanks! Nope, I won't be traveling to Scotland, hopefully I will be in Cairo for a study abroad for fall semester.

Asharah - I performed this piece on Monday in my beledi dress, and a lot of people really liked it!
