      Hey Jae!!

      I'm really glad you posted this because it's so raw and the overhead lighting and lack of costuming really help me see what your body is doing (I tend to get drawn in to watching and out of 'teacher mode' when i'm watching a performance).
      What I see:

      your grace and fluidity of your upper body is beautiful. You got it! However, it looks like that's what you work toward and practice, and you forget about your lower half. I would suggest really remembering that the lower half of your body is there to root you--to stay grounded. Keeping your knees softer (even bent) with the weight in your heels would be a great place to start. No matter what move you're doing they should maintain the same general bendedness. You can practice that with maya as it looks like your heels are leaving the ground there (they shouldn't). Check yourself by making sure your head stays level. Another thing that I think would help ground you is to think about keeping your thighs engaged and strong (I have issues with this myself)--that will keep your legs together more, and anchor you so that you're not thrown off by your own spins as much. I also find it helpful for things like down-hips.

        Oh yes I forgot about the raised heels on the mayas! It was hard to tell, but if you are using your heels, try to get out of the habit. This move is all about the obliques and working the lower side ab muscles to get that stretch. NO heels!!

          HEHEHE! Heels.

          I can't even do a maya with flat feet. Especially with level changes.

          I love me some Possum!

            <I can't even do a maya with flat feet>

            you will...just takes practice! If it's with level changes, you can come up onto the balls of your feet...but the point is that it's not the lifting of your heels that creates the movement, it's your obliques and the hips reaching out.

            :)

    Hi Jae,

    Ah yes, my favorite song so far from Beats Antique. My thoughts...

    »While I'm all for interpreting a song in your own way, the song has a 9/8 rhythm and it would have been nice to see some movements that acknowledge that strong beat. Now I'm biased because I've performed to this song too (see my post "moderator throws self to wolves" for the clip) and I use some 9/8 Turkish Rom moves in the piece...but I'm not saying you have to do that. Just that it's a super strong rhythm, especially in this song, and it's nice when the dancer shows off how well she knows it and then plays with it.

    »spins: I know you're into the Zoe-inspired spins that start with the head and upper body, but remember that your core needs to stay super strong so that it's not off-balance. I know you were on carpet and that makes it harder. But in the series of spins, you were way off your center, and that may be something to work on. In paddle turns, the non-paddle foot (usually the left) should *NOT* leave the floor at all. You pivot on it but it shouldn't physically leave the floor. Bend the knees more and make your paddles steps way smaller than they are. You will find a much more stable and smooth spin that way. So no matter what the rest of your body is doing, your feet know exactly where they're going to be, and keeping that core strong will allow much more upper body work.

    »you have simply awesome belly rolls! I say show them off even more...as in not necessarily doing more of them, but making it a bigger deal when you do. Slow down, maybe turn the body diagonal and really milk it. Remember that the audience sometimes needs to be told "hey! This move rocks!" and "are you forgetting how sexy I am? Well let me remind you!"

    » a bit more softness in the arms would be good. They seemed a bit haphazard.

    Thanks for posting! I really like watching you dance :)
