Hello!
I'd like to invite anyone who's interested to join our brand new tribe "Higher Standards in Bellydance", which you can join here!
tribes.tribe.net/highersta...ellydance#
Since this Tribe is about feedback, and furthering ourselves at an individual level, I thought it might be an appropriate place to mention this new tribe, since it's about furthering and improving the dance itself.
To give you an idea of what we're about, here's the introduction:
Welcome!
This tribe is for bellydancers who wish to work together to raise the standards in bellydance. Some of our goals include getting bellydance out of venues like nightclubs, separating burlesque influence from bellydance, discouraging skimpy costumes and provocative choreography, and increasing the overall image of bellydance.
If you are tired of being turned down for events or dealing with the stereotypes that belly dance is not family appropriate, or somehow lesser than arts like ballet and modern, this tribe is for you.
Why is it that the oldest dance in the world is also the most misunderstood? Ballet, for instance, is only 400 years old, whereas the roots of bellydance are estimated to have originated 6,000 to 8,000 years ago in Babylon and Egypt. Yet ballet is well known and highly respected all over the world. When the word ballet is mentioned, one envisions a highly trained dancer in a beautiful theatre. When one envisions bellydance, many different things come to mind, from ill-trained dancers in a in sleazy nightclubs, to some of the finer troupes in respected venues. We need to work together to raise the standards in bellydance, and escape the stereotypes and misconceptions that bellydance has acquired. It is time for bellydance to be portrayed and understood for what it really is. Every dancer is an ambassador to this art form, and it is every dancers responsibility to educate the public, and our students to the best of our ability.

Currently, I have a video capture device for convering old VHS tapes, as well as converting video from our video camera. We've been noticing that when we convert video over, it widens the picture -- not something a belly dancer really appreciates, as you can imagine.

The converter worked great on our old computer, but it is not compatible with Windows Vista, hence the problem.

We would like a similar replacement as we still convert VHS on occasion. Can anyone recommend a video capture device, compatible with Windows Vista, and preferably uses 1394 Firewire? Or maybe there is something entirely different we should consider?

Thanks in advance for your help!

This is a rather informal video taken during a hafla I performed at in December 2008. It's one of the first solos I've ever done and it ended up being mostly improv since it was last minute, the performance area was a bit different than I thought it would be, and I'm really not used to having people so close to me (and tipping! Not that I didn't appreciate it...just kinda threw me off ;)~). I usually dance in a troupe doing tribal fusion and ATS so I'm not super comfortable on my own but I would definitely appreciate some feedback since I am continually trying to improve!
So we have a writing tablet and pen ready.. As one dances the other is writing...” I like that...” don't like that....’ could have done this....’ don't hold back...' etc.

Then while taping another dancer we had another brain storm... have the critiquer video and talk... that way it is in the moment and no need to look away to write !

This was great help. At the last show we were at I danced in 3 different parts. With each next performance I had the feedback fresh in my head and was able to apply it right away... not a week later!!

Our idea right now is to do our first set in red cabaret costumes with Middle Eastern love songs with English lyrics (if possible). We both really like ME dance pop, so we're thinking Tarkan, Natasha Atlas, etc...

Our second set will be a fusion of West Coast tribal fusion with our own humor. We plan to start with "Love Song" covered by Niyaz, then break into a rock song (undetermined yet), "Fever" covered by a local Middle Eastern fusion group called Reptile Palace Orchestra (check them out of you get time! http://www.reptilepalaceorchestra.com/), and then finishing with a drum solo we always do.

I was also dancing on a 5 foot high 4 foot wide platform which I hadn't been expecting, so it ended up being mostly improv, as what I'd practiced and planned on doing became impossible....and I know my arms got stupid towards the end as i was exhausted. And I was wearing foot undeez, which got all bunched up under my toes, but fortunately, the part where that became a major issue wasn't filmed.

I tend to have a problem with feeling confident when I perform, I really worked on this piece and I tried to feel confident throughout the whole time I was dancing. Every time I dance I usually start thinking " OH NO! you forgot this part! oh no, what does every one else think about this? Do they like it? Am I boring?". But that performance I really tried not too and to actually enjoy myself while I'm dancing...

I've been working on transitioning out of being more of a gothic tribal fusion dancer into going straight tribal fusion. So, this was a bit of an experiment for me on a few levels. Mostly, I was working on having more energy in the my dancing and having more energy exchanged between me and the audience.
I wish I had shown more of what I could do in the realm of floor work. I pretty much just rolled over twice and got up...but that is the nature of improv. The beginning is a bit repetitive with the 3 step turns across the stage, but if I remember right I kinda blanked a tiny bit...I had the beginning chunk worked out but got behind time and blanked...lol Also, I don't think I should have put it on my shoulder...it was kind of a whim at the time and I didn't end up doing anything new and/or incredibly impressive once it was there, but ya live ya learn...

Soooooooo......what do ya'll see?

Is it normal to have pain in your heels after wearing them? Or will I get used to that with time of wearing them? Im clueless when it comes to heels, as I just recently tried to do a routine in them for the first time, and it went horribly! My fellow classmates have NO problem at all dancing with heels but then again, they are used to it. So basically, Im just wondering if Im doing something wrong or if this is common for a person not used to dancing in heels? Do I need to get used to the pain? Or is pain abnormal? Am I standing in them wrong? I hear you are supposed to lean on the heel, but damn, that hurt WAY worse than simply standing evenly in them.
Sorry for the retarded questions.....but Im not savvy at all in this "dances with shoes" field. LOL!

Hi all, first post here. It really doesn't have much to do with feedback, so if you'd like to point to a better tribe where I can ask this, feel free. If you think this doesn't belong here I will have no problem having it deleted and reposting it somewhere else. But out of all belly dance tribes I am part of, it seemed to make the most sense to ask here. This is because from the various threads here you have shown yourselves to be a knowledgeable crowd... so maybe you can help me with this.

I am a fairly new dancer (less than 2 years under the belt, 7 months of Egyptian style) and I would like to improve my musicality. I know very little about Middle Eastern music, but I've started to really enjoy it. I've fallen in love with "cabaret" style but I am overwhelmed with the amount of things I need to know about Middle Eastern music and culture. For starters, though... I think I should learn more about the music. I can see now how a lot of the dance fits so well in it, like it was especially designed for that kind of music. I want to be able to dance like that. This requires that, first, I LISTEN to the music.

So, here I ask... what are some good albums that compile important songs I should know and recognize? Please, recommend "legit" Middle Eastern stuff only... I don't want anything "techno-y"or "fusion-y." What are some important artists I should know and recognize? I think this is the first step I need to take. But of course, any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello all, I've been kind of lurking on this tribe, but I wanted to throw out my drum solo for feedback. This is my first full solo choreography, although I've been dancing for a couple of years. I've performed this solo about 5 times at various workshops and shows, and this was the 4th time I'd performed it in Atlanta.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=FreWEVdCPto

So here are the aspects about it that I noticed:

1) bad arm posture - dropping elbows, chest is caved in at times
2) I had a tendency in this touch my stomach? Don't know what that's about as I don't do it normally
3) hip articulation ain't so hot on some places, it's a pretty athletic choreography, I think I need to build my stamina
4) got crooked on those spins in the finale - would have liked to have been more on the center of the stage
5) bra was not too secure - I know I've been "blessed" (I think it more of a curse) and I didn't tighten the bra before I went on stage, thus I look like I am falling out.

There's probably more, but that's what I can think of at the moment. I am usually a very improv artist if I am not dancing ATS or with Awalim (the dance company I am in) . This solo has been a learning experience for me and I plan to get as much out of it as I can!

This was also my first time performing with shoes on. I remember worrying during this performance that I was boring people.

I had a thought. I would love to use this tribe more, but I am not comfortable with being required to put a public link to a public video for all the world to see, just to get some feedback from a select few respected people (you folk!).

We can always post private videos and "friend" people who were willing to review us so that they could see the video... But that's an awful lot of effort on the part of the reviewer and implicitly binds them to giving at least *some* feedback -- which they might not want to do.

What do you think about having a secret shared YouTube login wherein people who were shy (like me) could post their videos yet where others could also see (by logging in with the same login)? The username and password could be shared through PMs to people who were members of the tribe. That'd at least enable more people to get feedback without having to put their rehearsals or works-in-progress up for all the world to see.

What do you think?

Here are a few of the things I noticed: my undulations and hips were rather unfinished looking. I have this tendency to kind of sway/twist my hips instead of actually bumping/snapping them, and I need to get better about that. Twists/sways have their place, but I do them way too often, and a lot of the time it doesn't look as good as when my hips are snappier. My undulations FEEL finished, in my muscles I mean, but when I see myself do them on video, they look unfinished and I think it's because I need to learn to pull my lower abs in more, really exaggerate them so they show up through my, well... belly! I had family and friends in the audience screaming for me (can you hear 'em? Ha ha) but I still need to work on maintaining eye contact. At one point I blanked on my next move so when I finally caught up, I was about half a beat behind, which thankfully I fixed fairly quickly. Also, my makeup was a little too light, YET again. I really need to work on the whole stage makeup thing.

This is my first post to this tribe.
After seeing such great feedback from all of you ladies here I decided to post my video and I'm reeeeeeally curious what you're going to say :)

This is a video taken by a professionall camerman in an improvised studio so I it was a bit harder and I was nervous thinking how it has to be perfect ( and it never is :) ) ...

Here is the link :
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ5eOGPPFi8

It is sooo diferent to be filmed in a studio and when performing (at least to me ) so I want to learn form this video as much as I can so that the next time when I'm going to make a video like this it will better as much it can be :)

Thank you for you feedback!

I'm sorry that the person that was taping concentrated heavily on one dancer, he said that since we were quite far apart he couldn't follow the both of us all the time. We do tend to have a much wider stand than what you would use in ATS when we have to"cover" a larger space. Makes us more visible by everybody when they are sitted at a distance in a large circle, and we try to compensate the distance keeping alive the "spech" betwen dancers with eye contact, but I wonder how much we loose in choesion from an aestethic point of view.

I recently completed this belt - a regular studded leather belt to which I added yarn fringe and coins - and wore it in a couple of performances. After one performance I asked a dancer I trust to critique me and one of her responses was that I needed more "flash at the hips," and I agree. I love the concept of this belt, but so far I think my execution falls a little short. I just can't really figure out what else to DO with the darn thing, especially since most of the belt is already taken up by the studs, so it's not as easy just to glue or stitch random shiny things to the leather. I was thinking about a panel of fabric in the back, maybe even bustled a little bit, buuuuut I'm not 100% sure.

Please, take a look and help me figure out how exactly this belt is falling short of the end goal - which is to be an attractive, eye-catching fusion bellydance hip garment - and how I can achieve this!

Admittedly we were really excited and nervous and we got a great response that night but in watching the video now 8ish months later we’ve been noticing a lot of the same little issues continuing to pop up which to me seem to be related to getting distracted and/or lost no matter how much it gets practiced... Those little mess ups drive us nuts so any advice on specifically curbing that would be appreciated!

We are a fusion troupe. We do use various cultural bits and influences but we don’t claim to be anything authentic in any way. I wouldn’t call us tribal either although it is in our name from back in the day…

***This is what else I would like to know specifically:

- Were you entertained or bored?

- What didn’t work? What did? And why?

- Should we boot any of the choreographies? Should we boot any of the dancers? (haha, just kidding... or am I...)

All of us are okay with being singled out as well...

Anything else? Spill… even if you liked it ;-)

It was a light hearted performance... not serious - (as you can tell from the music choice)... just more fun. Please feel free to critique, or just watch and enjoy. I am sure it will make you smile (at least int he second part). OH and P.S. I put the costuming together about an hour before the performance, and the music was just laying around from an older performance)... Again be gentle.... it is meant to be fun.

This is a video of a number my troupemate and I did at a student hafla last week. I'm not looking for critique of technique particularly here, more feedback on the artistic interpretation (choreography, performance, mood, costuming, etc.). It was originally designed as a trio, then one member pulled out and it ended up as a duet. We're planning on turning it back into a trio, and polishing it up a bit, which is a why I'm asking for feedback as we think of what to change.

It's part choreography and some improv (my solo bit is improv); it was a whim of mine to do something to Edith Piaf's music, and we finished putting it together minutes before we performed. It's inspired by The Indigo's 'Serpent Rouge'.

Link: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=btNdKN7_tQg
It's the first time I've peformed it, and it's my second dance solo ever. I've already made a mental list of a number of things to fix and work on, including posture (especially tucking my pelvis more... I have a bit of lumbar lordosis, so I have to be extra-conscious of my posture), drilling so that I can keep that slow hip shimmy going while I do the chest circles, strengthening my backbends, and working on evening out the odd overly-active left wrist/stiff right wrist combo (I think it's that my right wrist is stronger, plus stiff from writing all day, and my left is weaker... also I think my teacher moves her left wrist a lot, and I may have picked up the habit from her).
