I've been approached about sponsoring a workshop on voi: that is veil on poi. I've been interested in this for some time but must confess that my poi truly sucks!

I need to see if there is much interest. If I did it, it would be the morning of Sept. 14; the day of 13 is already full with 4 mini workshops including lyrical veil, Egyptian drum solo, zills with Za-Beth, and stage makeup with Pandora. And, of course, the show.

The vendors, however, will be there until noon on Sunday so I already have the church. I'll consider adding this if 1. I can work out an arrangement and 2. there's enough intrest to make it worth everyone's while. Time is short, so please answer quickly!
Eric and I just wanted to send a message to all of you to let you know that we have released our new CD, 'Raqs al Shavarsh', a collection of original compositions for oud and Middle Eastern percussion named after the late oud master and composer Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian, our friend and teacher. We would love to share this collection of tunes with all of you, it is available at our shows and at www.okbari.org ... We hope you like it.

Also, we wanted to let you know that we are playing Turkish, Armenian, Arabic and Greek songs at the Mediterranean Grill, a fantastic Turkish restaurant in Freeport, Maine on Thursday night, July 24th, from 6:30-8:30. The food is by far the best Middle Eastern food around, prepared by the Cigris, a Turkish family that owns and operates the place...for more info about the Mediterranean Grille check out their website at www.mediterraneangrill.biz ... We're also excited about 2 more upcoming shows we would like to tell you about: first, we are playing the 'Mirage' performance with Nayas Trance on 8/23 at 7pm at the St. Lawrence Community Arts Center. Second, we are playing a very special show at the grand re-opening of the newly restored Turkish Smoking Room at the Victoria Mansion on 9/13 at 6pm. This wonderful event features Turkish music with Okbari and special guest Carl Dimow (of The Casco Bay Tummelers and Zhok Therapy, to name a few) as well as the elegant and authentic raqs sharqi Middle Eastern dancing of the incomparable Jamileh. The Mediterranean Grill in Freeport will be catering this event with their delicious, unique, and quintessentially Turkish food...we hope many of you can make it!For more info on this event, you can visit www.victoriamansion.org...

And of course we continue to appear every Friday and Saturday night from 6:30-8:30 at Acropolis Greek restaurant in Portland (879-2400), featuring a rotating cast of amazing belly dancers! (Most of whom can be found here, I think...)

We hope to see you all soon, and thanks for taking a minute to read this email.

I wore this only for the pics, but I'm not dancing as much and want my Camaro done, so I must sacrifice this one of a kind. I had this custom made for me when I was in Egypt. It needs to see the light of day....a very hard decision to let it go! Smoke free/pet free home!

I'm a 38D cup, it has a little clevage, and plenty of room to let out the straps. I have 38/39 inch hips (size 12/13) depending on the day and it is actually a little loose. You could take in the lyrca, I never did as it hasn't been worn except for pics. There is a "dip" in the skirt which you could wear to the side or in the front. Skirt is 38.5-39 inches long.

A couple of us need some new pictures taken and my husband has a new camera-and new lenses, lights, filters, etc. And I'm old and nostalgic for the old photo weekends. So....I'll arrive at 9 with a lot of costumes (old and new), makeup, mirrors, etc. We'll set up a photo place and a dressing room and spend the day making each other into our fantasies. Jim will then take pictures. Now, he warns that he's primarily a landscapist not a protrait pro, but this is for fun! A great opportunity for newer people that may not have costumes, and fun for the 'pros' that want to try something new. To cover the equipment and time, there's $10 charge for your photos, which will be good-and I promise the fun!

You bring your "stuff" to share-the more we share the more fun! Also, Sue Sprague and I both have costumes for sale, so bring along yourr flea market. No absolute schedule, but let me know when you plan to be there so I can lay out a plan.

Concepts and Tools for Fusion Dance & Poi
with Aradia and Sally the Altar Boy of Zingari East

When: Sautrday August 9, 12-5 pm, hafla at 7 pm

Where: Lotus Rising World Dance Studio (Directions)

Price:
Belly Dance Class $30.00 ($45.00 after July 26)
Poi Class $30.00 ($45.00 after July 26)

What:
ARADIA PRESENTS: Tools to Strengthen, Execute and Evolve your Fusion Dance 12-2pm

- Have you asked yourself any of the following questions?
I want to do something different with my dance, but I’m not sure what.
My base is in Egyptian Cabaret, but I really want to try/get into Fusion.
How can I translate what I already know into a more modern/alternative/fusion dance?
How do I make a Fusion Performance idea look as good in person as it does in my head?
I want to learn to BellyDance, but I also know what I don’t want to look like.
I want to perform a Fusion piece, but keep getting stuck.

In this workshop, we will touch on several useful tools which will:
* Strengthen our private practice
* Provide a fresh perspective on choreography and combinations
* Plant seeds for the execution of effortless improvisation
* Promote the evolution of our base technique into personalized elements of fusion.

Prior dance experience will be very helpful in this workshop, but is not required. Standard movements, present in all forms of BellyDance will be used in their original forms, and then layered, warped, twisted, drilled and personalized. We will move from our comfort level, using different theories of movement and non-traditional music.

The following musical selections will be played during the workshop, and are available for download on iTunes and other mp3 websites. Daft Punk "Technologic" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" , Amon Tobin "Untitled (with Kid Koala)" "El Wraith" and "Proper Hoodidge" , Etta James "At Last" , US3 "Cantaloop - Flip Fantasia" , Corvus Corax "Fili Neidhardi" , The Chemical Brothers "Do It Again" , Indian Ropeman "66 Meters (radio edit)" , Shroud "Black" , Man Man "Spider Cider" and/or "Engrish Bwudd"

STAB PRESENTS: Poi Technique Workshop "Dude, I only know five moves..." 3-5pm

Let Sally the Altar Boy show you how to work a basic, limited vocabulary into a fun, easy performance that can flourish into a solo or be used with your favorite dancer. In this workshop we will:

* Learn to(gasp) move from one spot!
* Learn to separate your basic butterfly, weave, and corkscrew into a funky groove!
* Learn how to not look like a broken record by spinning some transitions designed to be tricks themselves!
Some poi experience highly recommended.

Who:
Aradia is the Artistic Director and a founding member of Zingari East Fusion Dance, based in Rhode Island. Since its inception in 2000, the collective has sought to push the creative envelope with their performance pieces, incorporating various styles and fusions of Middle Eastern, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rave and Break-dance as well as showcasing the talents of its ever-evolving members who spin fire and glow poi, hula hoop performers, ballet dancers, drummers, comedy/variety acts and whomever else might want to jump on our wagon and go for a ride to far off and exotic places.

Joshua Lapan ’s soul was ripped from his body by a higher power and replaced by Sally The Altar Boy in Rhode Island about 7 years ago. After a brief solo career Sally met the stygian queen Aradia and joined the tribal dance collective Zingari East. Since then Sally has performed in clubs along the eastern seaboard with the cult sensation - using New England as a springboard for their plans of world domination. His performing and dancing is will known to cause shock, panic, awe, hallucinations in the elderly and children, the sudden need to buy glow-sticks and in extreme cases it has been linked to a state of euphoric epiphany.

This information can also be found on my website: http://jaiyana.com/classes/

Improvisational Tribal Style Bellydance
8 Tuesdays, July 1 - August 26 (no class 6/29)
7:15 - 8:15 PM

$80 / $12 drop-in if there is space
Class size limited - register early!

World Arts Studios, in their new location: 65 W. Commercial Street, Portland
(in the red Portland Star Match building)
Plenty of free parking!

Improv Tribal Style Bellydance (ITS), sometimes referred to as American Tribal Style (ATS) and often simply called "tribal bellydance," pulls movement vocabulary from Raqs Sharqi, Flamenco, classical Indian dance, and many other sources. In ITS, the focus is on dancers as a group as opposed to a soloist; dancers improvise together using cues, shared vocabulary, and nonverbal communication.

We will learn tribal posture and vocabulary, lead and follow each other's movements, experiment with small and large group formations, and have a lot of fun connecting with each other through dance. We will also discuss the history of tribal-style in the United States, and look briefly at the rich, textured costuming used in this style.

Please wear fitted, comfortable clothing that you can move in and that shows your posture. Tank tops and yoga pants are perfect. Please also bring something to tie around your hips. Depending on the class level, we may be using zills (finger cymbals) - bring them if you have them!

This class is appropriate for dancers of all body types, ages, and genders who already have a grounding in the basics of bellydance - at least 6 weeks or more of experience. Call or email me if you are unsure.

Okbari and Zhok Therapy in concert!
From the Balkans to Turkey to Portland, Maine

Saturday, June 14th, 8pm, $10
One Longfellow Square
Double bill featuring Zhok Therapy and Okbari
www.carldimow.com

> ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
> Two of Portland's most exciting world music bands, Zhok Therapy and
> Okbari, will be featured in a double bill at One Longfellow Square on
> Saturday, June 14th. Zhok Therapy performs traditional and new music
> with influences ranging from Balkan dance music to Gypsy music to
jazz.
> Okbari performs traditional Armenian and Turkish music. This is the
> second time these bands have joined forces for a double bill. Their
> concert this past January was thrilling for the audience and the
> musicians. There will be dance space available for anyone who wants
to get up and groove to these great bands.

> Zhok Therapy is the unruly alter-ego of Maine's well-known klezmer
> band, the Casco Bay Tummlers. Zhok Therapy still has one toe in the
> klezmer tradition, but has expanded their repertoire to include
Greek, Balkan, and Middle Eastern music. Adding further influences from jazz
> and blues, their deep grooves and improvisations are both innovative
> and well rooted in a rich and varied ethnicity. "Zhok Therapy will
> remedy whatever ails with their cross pollinations." The band
featuresthe immensely gifted improvisor Mark Tipton on trumpet. The other
band members are: Carl Dimow, flutes and guitars, Steve Gruverman,
clarinets and saxophone, Julie Goell, bass and vocals, Hayes Porterfield, percussion.
(A zhok, by the way, is a type of Jewish and Middle Eastern rhythm.)

Okbari performs Armenian and Anatolian folk music, as well as traditional folk and contemporary songs from the Greek, Arabic and
Balkan traditons along with Ottoman and Arabic classsical music. Okbari is Amos Libby and Eric LaPerna. Libby is a
dynamic performer on oud, (a middle eastern lute), and voice. LaPerna
is a gifted and inspired percussionist. Okbari was formed in 1995 and
has released four recordings. In this unique performance, Okbari will
present a suite of Ottoman classical compositions along with Turkish
and Armenian folk songs inspired by their recent journey to Turkey.
Okbari will appear with special guest Carl Dimow on flutes and
guitar.

The two bands will join forces to end the concert. For their joint
performance they will feature some of the music of the late oud
master Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian.

After some minutes of swinging different sized dowels around my head and banging them on the floor the poor Lowe's employee said, "okay, now you are kinda scaring me."
I would LOVE to offer this as a closed session "master class" series for dancers with 2 or more years of study. We would focus on improving core technique, zills, and specialty props. We would learn about choreography and composition and have a forum for peer critique--more like an intensive workshop type format. I'd need to have 6-8 dancers signed up by the end of May to make this possible, otherwise I would simply offer a mixed levels summer session.
If you're interested,please contact me!

KARIM NAGI RETURNS TO PORTLAND FOR TWO EXCITING WORKSHOPS

So much fun and so much knowledge - Karim is back by popular demand!

Workshop 1: MUSICALITY FOR DANCERS: In addition to mastery of technique and bodily dexterity, true dance expression requires musicality. The best dancers are those who emulate the music into their own movement. Several recurring themes in Arab music will be identified (using recorded examples) and explained in emotive, non musical terms. The class will cover Taksim, Melodic Themes, Vocal vs Instrumental Songs, Rhythms & Rhythmic Changes, Melodic Modulation, Song Structure, Orchestration and Instrumentation. Karim will guide students through several songs and lead them in dancing to each of these themes. This is a movement class that will help the dancer become the physical personification of the music.

Workshop 2: ARAB FOLK DANCE INTENSIVE: This class is an intensive introduction to the traditional group dances from the Arab world. These dances are primarily unisex, and emphasize synchronicity and group cohesion. This workshop includes Dabka Line Dance, Basic Tahteeb/Assaya Cane Dance, and the group-healing ritual motions found in Zikr and Zar practices. Each dance is taught efficiently as an introduction to the style, and is an initiation into possible future study. These are the dances done by "The People" in social, celebratory, and spiritual group settings. They can be taught to dancers at any level, as both a cultural and artistic experience. The group movements and concepts can later be extrapolated into performance-calibre skills and themes.

Sunday, May 4th, 12:00-2:00pm & 2:30-4:30pm
$35/workshop or $60/both in advance. Space is limited! No discounts at the door.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone here in Maine who supported and encouraged my work, and from whom I learned so much. A big thank you to my students for their trust in me, and for their commitment to learning and exploring.

I am very excited about this move, but I will also miss many things about this Maine bellydance community. I hope I'll be invited back for workshops or performances...*hint, hint* ;)!!!!!! And I hope to see some of you venture down to MA sometimes!!
