Keynote Speaker: Tanya Lemani

It is with excessive enthusiasm that I announce that our Keynote speaker at the 2010 Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive Lunch & Lecture will be belly dance icon, Tanya Lemani George.

Tanya has a long and established career as a producer, actress, bellydancer, author, and screenwriter, but is probably best known as the belly dancer who was featured in the Season 2 Star Trek episode, "A Wolf in the Fold". Tanya was also the featured belly dancer in Elvis Presley's 1968 Comeback Special.

Tanya recently published a book called "Have Belly, Will Travel", which is a memoir of her career in Las Vegas and Hollywood. She will be offering this book and signed photos at the 2010 Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive & Festival. Tanya is especially excited to be returning to the Flamingo, which is where she started her career at the age of 16.

More details will be announced when the full schedule is finalized. We just wanted to share our excitement with all of you!!

Your feedback is very important to us as we strive to improve the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive & Festival. This is completely private and we will not be able to track who says what...so please speak up and let us know the good, the bad, and the ugly. Your suggestions are useful and have helped us make many improvements over the year.

Additionally, as far as the survey structure...we've done our best to implement "skip logic" so that your experience taking the survey is as quick as possible. There are many questions that are asked simply to determine whether or not you even need to see the next set of questions. For example, if you reply that you did not attend any Thursday activities, the survey will automatically skip all Thursday related questions.

What was great about LVBDI?

So, in addition to saying thank you, I also wanted to mention a change I saw this year that really made LVBDI great. It was the addition of a separate beginner track. This year, I heard no one grumble in class that the instructor went too fast, or that the instructor had to slow down because a handful of dancers in the class had never picked up a veil/zills etc.

Instead, the new and very specific tracks left no surprises and the workshops went smoother than ever.

So, one thing that is great about LVBDI is that Samira really listens to what we, as workshop attendees, have to say.

So . . . let's hear what other dancers thought was great about this year . . .

Thank you so much for this years intensive. The workshops were wonderful, the vendors were wonderful, and the shows were amazing.
You work so hard and I truly appreciate your dedication to this event and bellydance. To everyone else reading this, I encourage any bellydancer young or not so young (yep we had a young lady of 79) any level to attend. With so many teachers to choose from, each dedicated to teaching you technique and/or choreography, you will be amazed at the knowledge you will come away with. The official "heads up"!!

Ok folks...this is your official "heads up". There are a number of classes this
year the the Intensive that are at risk of selling out. In fact, there is only
one spot left for Danya's poi class and only a couple left for Sacha's Drum solo
class. If you haven't registered for classes, please do so right away. This is
true for performers and teachers who opted for workshops. Once a class is sold
out...it is sold out, regardless of whether you have a coupon code or not.
Please secure your spot in the classes you want to attend.

Additionally, our festival line up is now full. There is a waiting list that
has already started. Our Event Guide has already gone to print, so if there is
any changes in the line up, they will not be printed in the program.

Lastly, our room block is now officially full (171%) and we are past our cut off
date. If you did not secure a room, I can probably still get you one in our
block, but you will need to contact me directly so I can give you the direct
line to our sales rep. Also, I believe Selena Kareena is still looking for a
roommate, so if you want to share a room, that is a possibility.

Our tee shirts and water bottles have arrived. Our Event Programs are off to
print. We are on the home stretch. Remember, the festival and shopping are
free and open to the public. I am looking forward to having you join us. This
will be our best year yet!

Aaaargh! You keep adding more vendors and such. I already have a full schedule with workshops booked all 4 days. It's driving me crazy to figure out how to do my classes and see the festival dancing and checkout all the vendors and relax in the pools and see the shows. Oh yes, and I guess keep my hubby company too! What do 'seasoned' attendees do in order to 'do it all'? Can you tell I am getting excited?

I have been asked to be the Director of Volunteers for the LV Intensive 2009. I am looking for enthusiastic, fun loving people who want to take part in one of the biggest and best events Las Vegas has to offer. So many performers come to Las Vegas and witness first-hand the comradery and family like atmosphere at this event and a great part is owed to all the wonderful and generous volunteers we count on each year.

Additionally, volunteers get the added perks of taking some classes or attending the shows for free, and have fun. There are many opportunities to be involved in. We need people to be ushers,to help at the registration tables, and to check people into classes. We also need help running the festival stage, runners for vendors & performers, personal assistants to the teachers, etc. We'd enjoy having some "belly husbands" who want to help move, set up, and tear down equipment as well as dealing with technical aspects of the event. We are so excited to announce that we have upgraded our magazine-sized Event
Guide. Not only will have great content including maps of the venue, an index
of performers, teachers, & vendors, articles, show line ups, bios photos,
festival information, and your business ad (of course!), but it will be "PERFECT
BOUND" (like an actual magazine) and it will have a COLOR cover!

Additionally, the layout is organized by professional graphic artists, Carolee
Cameron & Rick King, so that the presentation and quality is something our
attendees will cherish. It'll be a keeper, for sure!!

festival dancer. These "Vanity Ads" are a terrific way to send some love to

We are excited to share that we have attendees coming from 26 States, a huge
contingent from Canada, several from the United Kingdom and Greece. This is
going to be the largest Intensive we've seen in Vegas, yet!! It's a great year
to advertise or place a "Vanity Ad".

Due to the crazy economic climate, the room rates at Palace Station dropped below our previously contracted rates. They have graciously agreed to match the low rates that they are currently offering.

We are very excited to announce that our new room rates are $20-$30 less a night! That's a substantial savings to our attendees and also makes it very easy for our locals to get rooms too.

Festival of Communities is the official closing program for UnityFest, a
celebration of the various cultural traditions that make up the UNLV community
and beyond. Friends and family are invited to the free festival, which will
feature:

International food tasting
Cultural displays of art, dance, and culture
Live music
Face painting

Omni Gamers with many board games, carnival games, activities for both children
and adults

Intermediate? or Advanced? or Professional?

Although I haven't registered yet, I am trying to decide where I will fit in for the workshops. I have been dancing for 4 years, performing solos and in group numbers, both choreographed and improvisational. I have been paid for my party bookings and I hope my attitude is professional. I just hope I am advanced enough for the Advanced/Professional level. Not that I wouldn't gain some by being in the beginner class but I want to grow and stretch as a dancer. I just don't want to feel too indimidated by all the advanced/professionals. I guess my question is just how advanced are the advanced classes? Will you have descriptions of the classes soon to help us decide? Also, who are the private lessons with? Is there a separate cost for those and if so, how much? Thanks, Nebula

We are very close to opening registration to dance on the festival stage at the 2009 event--we are estimating Feb. 1st. Those who are currently registered will be given a "heads up" just prior to opening up the submission process. Also, festival dancers need to be registered for at least one class or lecture. It will be a first-come first-placed process, so we highly recommend you look at your schedule now to determine what day/time would be best for you. Whew!! I did it!! (And earlier than I have ever done it before--I am
so proud of myself--whoo hoo!!.) The SCHEDULE IS UP!!

For the 2009 Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive & Festival, we have a
grand total of 38 instructors coming from across the USA as well as
Canada & Germany. They will be teaching a cumulative total of 73
hours of instruction over the course of the 4 day event.
Additionally, there will be over 12 hours of bellydance performances
between the festival and both pro-shows! This year is going to RAK
THE PALACE!!!

Special Holiday Performance Video from the 2009 LVBDI Directors!!!

Some of the Directors of the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive have been working on a very special holiday performance; however, as it turns out due to scheduling issues we will not be able to debut this piece at the Hafla on Saturday. It's kind of sad as we figured we would be some of the first dance to do Holiday Disco-Fusion (our own special brand!).

Anyway...at our last practice we were able to put the routine on tape and upload it so that at least the holiday message wouldn't be lost.

We hope you enjoy our show and may you all have the best that the Season has to offer!! (And I sincerely hope that Tori, Danya, Carolee, and Ashtalea forgive me for posting this).

...for the other single moms out there...

I'd like to share a little something personal here because I'm very excited about having just finished working in a special coaching program for single moms with Honoree Corpron.

Aside from being a bellydance event organizer, I also run a website company and juggle all the responsibilities of being a single parent. I have been a single mom for 3 years. I have a beautiful 8 year old daughter and a fantastic 3 year old son. Needless-to-say, I am a proud mamma, but as every single parent knows...being a single responsible parent can be one of the most challenging and daunting tasks. Truly, having a sick child and having to drag both kids to the grocery store at 3am for medicine while carrying the youngest one and praying you don't get thrown up on just sucks eggs.

So for the past few months, I have had the honor of working with a group of other single moms. It has been a program geared to give us the tools to feel more confident, develop our goals, and push forward despite any obstacles. Truly, it has been a real gift to meet these other women and to develop a support network of friends who really understand the challenges, inspire me to keep a positive attitude, and help me realize my own potential.

My coach is writing a book featuring our stories. Yup, the Bellydance Intensive very well may be talked about. Certainly, this program really helped me stay focused on creating such a great event and assisted me in creating resources I never knew I had. I owe a lot to Honoree, as she constantly inspires me to have more, grow more, achieve more, and be more.

She has started a blog about the book and about the program. I wanted to share it with everyone because it is my hope that there are a few other single moms out there that need to hear this stuff. And if you aren't a single mom, then quite possibly you know one. So please check it out. I'm in the photos on the bottom left.

Samira you really out did yourself this time!!! :) the friday show was amazing!!! i loved how some of the dancers were back lit so you could only see their sillouette! tre' sexy! it was great to see sooooooo many smiling faces!!! i picked up some kick ass stuff from black lotus clothing, and anya tribal as well. it was serisouly a great time!!! the saturday night show was awesome!!! i loved watching all the creative performances and the sea of beautiful dancers getting together to support this fabulous art form!!! to everyone who helped this event go off with out a hitch THANK YOU!!!!! hope everyone had safe travels back home!!!

What happens in Vegas...happens at the Bellydance Intensive!!

Bwahahahahaha. Whoo hoo. I can't believe I survived the weekend. It was truly amazing. It's Monday at noon... and I still haven't even made it home yet. I just checked out of Palace Station this morning and am doing all the after-weekend follow-up!

I thought I'd start a thread where you could speak up and share your favorite "Vegas" moments. I know that I always have a moment here or there...where I say, "Wow, only is Vegas, baby!" Speak up here and share your stories...

I have several, but I'll keep it to just a couple for the moment.

1) Only in Vegas does one order custom-made gold lame thongs for making showgirl costumes. HEE HEE!! Seriously, Leyla Amir and I had an absolute riot making the showgirl costumes for Anglea and April. I know that one of you out there will post some pictures...

2) After Sat. night was all over, I was riding down the escalator when our "Elvis" planted a big kiss on me. All my directors were at the bottom of the escalators and let out a whopping cheer. Tee hee!! Kissing Elvis...now that is a Vegas moment!!

I know that Amaryllis has a couple of silly stories...

Notice another Instructor Change...

We are sad to report that Habib, of Ganesha Bazaar, is going to be unable to attend the Intensive this year due to a severe back injury. Her doctors have not released her to instruct. We hope that everyone sends her some love and well-wishes. We want her to recover fully.

Luckily, we have been able to secure another Bollywood instructor to take Habib's class. Her name is Safira (aka Anita Greene) and she is based in Havasu City, Arizona. She and her troupe performed a really wonderful bollywood choreography at one of our Vegas Haflas last spring. We are excited that she was available at such short notice. I have posted her photo and bio on the website. Welcome Safira!!

Class openings at the Intensive...

Hello community!!

We are really getting close now, eh?!! I can't tell you how excited I am about the Intensive this year. We have so many people who are travelling from all over the world to be with us!

I wanted to give the attendees a "heads up" that due to various cancellations, I do have additonal spots in many of the sold out classes. (NO, I don't have any spots for Kami or Ava. Sorry.) Truly there are only one or two spots available in some of these classes, but it isn't worth the headache to re-open these classes on the website shopping cart.

If there are any classes that you desperately wanted to take, but missed out on because they sold out, then send me a private email off list and I'll let you know if there are any spots available to purchase. If I can accomodate your request, I will send you a paypal invoice. You will have 72 hours to make your purchase. Once payment is recieved, I will confirm your spot in the class.

This is for new purchases only. I cannot make transfers at this late of a date. Thanks for understanding.

Due to the current state of the economy, the room rates at Palace Station have suddenly dropped substantially below our original blocked rate. I just got off the phone with my sales rep, and they have graciously agreed to give all of our group the exisiting lower rates which should save most of you close to $100 on the weekend (which also means more $$ for shopping!!).

We are excited to announce that Inara will be teaching the Introduction to Floorwork class on Saturday Sept. 6th at 2:15pm. This class was formerly scheduled to be taught by Andrea Regan, but due circumstances completely beyond her control Andrea will not be able to attend.

Inara is one of the amazing women in the award-winning troupe, Tabu. She is a very well-versed performer, a wonderful teacher, and an all-around neato person to boot!! We feel very privileged to have her available to take over this session and we are certain that her students will all benefit from her knowledge.

Doing the tourist thing.....

Hello !

I'm going to be coming over to the US for the intensive and staying a few extra days to do the whole tourist thing - I'm after some advice and also some company !

From the locals I would like to know which shows and trips I have to take, and which ones to avoid. I'd like to know where I can get big bottomed jeans (usually Gap, but happy to take suggestions) and anywhere I can get to eat some nice food and see some cool dancing.

From the other "out of towners" I was wondering if anyone wanted to join me in the tourist stuff ? - I'm always happy to travel alone, but sometimes its nice to know who you are sitting next to at a show and to have a drink afterwards to chat through the highlights.

I'm flying home on the Thursday the 11th, so am looking to fill the 8th/9th/10th.
I've been looking at the trips available on the site and I guess I'm interested in one of the longer trips out to the Hoover, the night flight and the jeep trip (or will that be killer hot ?)
For the shows I guess it would be good to get a cheap seat to see Cher, then maybe Stomp or the Blue man, Love, Ice or Le Reve. Too much to do in three nights I know....

I hope this isn't off topic, but I'm really looking forward to meeting lots of new people and seeing the sights, as well as dancing my socks off.

I am so very pleased by the response I've received regarding the 2009 Bellydancers of Las Vegas Calendar project!! I really hope that this project succeeds, and benefits us all as a whole.

It is still early in the registration process, but I do have a few remaining spots (months) available in the calendar that need to be filled. If necessary, I will buy as many of the spots as I can manage for myself, but I'd much prefer to feature as many of the other performers as possible. I don't want it to become the "Britt of Las Vegas" calendar! :-)

I strongly encourage any Vegas performers who are interested, and have not yet done so, to contact me at britt@brittshimmy.com for all of the info. There is no absolutely no obligation to apply and no financial risk, so it can't hurt to check it out!

Ok...so in case any of you missed the big announcements earlier this year....

The Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive is merging forces with the Wiggles of the West Bellydance Competition in 2009!! We are still 2 separate events, but we will be running concurrently side-by-side next Sept. 9-13th, 2009. Where else can you be in 2 places at once??!! Two events in one great trip!!

Anyway, I thought I should post a thread to keep you all updated on the WOW progress as well....

First Friday every first friday of the month

This is a event that happens in the Arts District every first friday of the month. The area is going through a facelift, new wider sidewalks, new beautiful trees where planted a couple weeks ago. Thousands of people show up to hear free music from talented artist. Plus a wide variety of local artist with unique items to sell.

I participate in the show, I sell jewelry along with other talented people. It's a fun event, and it's in the evening from 6pm-10pm, so right now that helps beat the heat. They ask for a $2 entrance fee, unfortunately budget cuts have happened. But what can you do in Vegas for only $2? The event is run by volunteers mainly. So if you want to help out go to www.firstfriday-lasvegas.org, any help is appreciated.

So come out with the whole family, meet locals, and it's an inexpensive "local event" since we now all deal with high gas prices. Food, drinks, music, art, what else do we need? Take the I-15, exit Charleston, pass Holsum lofts, on Casino Center, all streets are blocked off, and police presence is always there. It's a safe and fun event. (Even seen different bellydancers perform on stage too!)

I just recently purchased the new style choli from Chovhani and am having a devil of a time finding anything to match it. It’s not quite royal/not quite electric blue…but very pretty. I’m looking for a belt or skirt or anything for da hips that might possibly go that would be in a tribal fusion vein. I know you guys have a bit of a thriving community out there and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

Exciting News about Tribal Nights

Tabu is pleased to announce our featured dancers for our first Tribal Nights on June 19th will be Marisa and Britt!!!! We are so excited to feature their fun and hypnotic style of tribal fusion.

There is no cover charge. So bring your family and friends and enjoy a delicious dinner, tasty appetizers, and a smooth hookah! : ) We will also have performances by Inara, Raven, Nisha, Shalini, and more, as well as open dancing. If you are interested in performing, please pm me, Inara or Nisha to let us know.

So please join us for an evening of fun, food, dance and hookah! Festivities will begin at 7pm at the Greek Village Cafe. Hope to see you there!

It's finally here! Our brainchild Tribal Showcase event has fully
formed and we are ready to kick it off in style! The idea is to
"Feature" a special performer or troupe every month, as well as to
provide opportunities for anyone who wants to present a Tribal or
Fusion dance piece, as well as providing a chance to get down to the
best, freshest-squeezed up and coming Tribal and Fusion music, and all
our fave oldies too. E-mail Inara, Raven, or Nisha if you want to
perform. "Featured" performer/troupe by invite only, but anyone who
wants to dance in the regular line-up is welcome to...just let me know
and bring your music!

just about anything is welcome.

Music, Costume, and Dance need to be appropriate for a Public venue.
TABU reserves all rights to exclude a performance or performer if it
