But the reason I'm really posting is because something just came to mind. I don't know how it is with other services but I know in the Air Force you have to volunteer in the community A LOT. So if your husband or wife or you have to work a benefit find out if they need entertainment. Most of the time they do! And then volunteer yourself for it. It's a free performance and they almost alway have equipment. And it gets our community out there.

Like me, I'm dancing for the Relay for Life and don't forget to dance at the Child Development Centers they love it! And for Vets!

Thanks and Happy Dancing!

Search for an instructor

I am an Egyptian/Cabaret instructor in Ocean Springs, MS, a tiny town on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in between a few Air Force and Seabee bases (Keesler, Gulfport Seabee base, etc.). I will be moving to Glendale, CA in January 2008 and am looking for a Cabaret instructor to take over my classes. I thought I would ask this tribe, as I have recently separated from the Air Force, and for some coincidental reason, all of the bellydancing instructors at this yoga studio have been military in the past. Does anyone know of any Cabaret/Egyptian instructors that either are in the area now or will be next year that would consider taking over my classes? Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Let's kick off the conversation!

I think that I "know" (LOL) most of you in here already, but let's all introduce ourselves anyway!

I'm Leigh and I'm a prior service Marine and currently a Marine Corps wife. We're stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, but I moved back home to the New Orleans area last year. I've been married to my hubby for about 3 1/2 years now and we have a 2 year old son named Connor who thinks that he is about 20 years old! The hubby is currently deployed to Iraq, which is where he has been basically since we got married...we only get to see each other for about 6 weeks a year (3 years and counting now!), but hopefully this will be his last deployment (he's decided to get out of the military and answer the siren's call of the civilian sector!...a bittersweet decision for us since between the two of us we've got almost 20 years invested in the Corps).

I"m a tribal fusion dancer, but more in the tribaret fashion than what most people think of (most people think of Rachel Brice, who is a wonderful dancer, but our style is more of a real mix between tribal and cabaret). Basically we do what we are feeling and dress how we are feeling! Makes for lots of fun! No rules! LOL I've been dancing for about 2 years now...started off with Egyptian Cabaret and switched to tribal...then found my current style (which we've dubbed "boundless fusion") about a year ago and been loving it ever since! I'm in process of moving towards going professional...I'm part of a professional tribe called Boundless Fusion that we've just formed and are hoping will really take off! I'm also a performer at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival, which will be opening in about 10 days! So excited! Out there I'm known as Safira, the Phuria Dai of the Gypsy Kumpania. So if anyone is going to be at LRF, come and look for me! Probably would be hard to miss with my seriously colorful costuming and crazy personality!

I dont' teach classes yet, but I'm shooting for next August....I've just got so much going on between now and then that I don't have the time to start teaching! I'm currently getting my instructor certification with Hadia (literally...had my first day today and will be finishing up on Saturday!) and I plan on getting ACE certified in the Spring...I believe in being as well educated as possible before starting to teach so that I can impart correct and safe knowledge to my students....but I'm truly excited about making the leap from student to professional to educator! Besides, how much more perfect can it get if you can make some money doing something as fun as this?!

So now I've started it off...what's everyone else's story? :)

Hi everyone, so I'm new to this tribe. Im not in the military yet but I plan on enlisting before the year is up. Um, even though I know a lot of people in the army Im pretty much clueless about joining, lol. Its like I have so many questions (some, I will admit, are kind of stupid, lol) I dont know what to ask! Im still in the process of getting myself in shape, I know I wont be like perfect but I would still like to be in really good shape when I join just so that everything isnt such a shock. Well any advice, tips, or suggestions anyone may have then please by all means throw them at me, because like i said Im completely clueless, lol.

Thanks in advance you guys. :)

I only seen this song performed to by cabaret style dancers. I want to do it myself for a Tribal Fusion number in my class to show case my style to the ladies in my class.

I just don't want to step on any toes so to say. I really like Azziza and the women in the class aren't really exposed to all ranges of BD so I wanted to mix it up a little in the Tribal Fusion way. I was wondering if it would be a good choice to go with Azziza even tho it's kind of a big Cabaret song or just go with what I feel. Thanks!

Hello, new to this tribe, I'm a Major, USA, currently at Ft Lewis near Seattle, WA. Happy New Year to everyone!
Annwyn, I read your article CPT Halfaker. I used to be at Walter Reed and was part of the medical team taking care of the amputees. She arrived right before I transferred, so I didn't get a chance to know her. Regardless, I'm so glad to hear she's doing well. Thank you for your lovely article about her!
BTW, did you know LTC Ron Stephens (MD) at all in Japan? He headed up the hospital there but he's since left. He's our consultant for our medical specialty. Small world!

Hello!
Yes I am a belly dancing military wife. My husband is an Active Reservist at Ft Knox with 7 years full time and 14 years Reserve and National Guard time. I have been dancing about 8 years and teach an intermediate class at Ft. Knox composed of spouses and active duty service women. I will post of photos of my gals! We had the fun of performing at the NCO club in September and at Ft. Knox's International Festival. I dance regularly at Gyros Express (a Greek restaurant off post) I strive hard to keep the dance folkloric with my student troupe since it is easy for young soldiers to get the wrong impression but perform Cabaret as a soloist. I am in the process of attempting to join the airforce as a Captain Social Worker and I need some help! I can do many flexible things but cannot for th life of me do the Duck walk that is required at the MEPS center. My big butt and hips causes me to fall backwards! Any help from anyone on tricks to master the elusive duck walk in the next 3 weeks?
Fatin

Hi everyone!
I'm a newbie to tribe as well as this site, but I wanted to say Hi! Annwyn referred me. I'm not too computer savvy, nor have much free time, but this site really looks interesting.
I'm a married mom of 2 little girls. I work part-time as a doc. Husband is Navy, and we'll be on shore duty in Yuma, AZ for the next few yrs. Originally, didn't want to come here, but now really love it. My group is the Jewels of the Desert, and we have alot of fun.
Anyway, Hi, looking forward to hearing from you guys in the future!
Vasiliki

Hey ladies! Wish me luck! I have my first ever solo restaurant gig tonight!

One of the dancers got sick and they needed a sub...I felt extremely honored when she thought of me! I've never danced solo before, other than stepping out for a short solo when we do bolerias (and I've got my girls backing me up then! plus, when I run out of ideas, I just step back into the chorus!). So I'm a little nervous....but I know that it is going to go great!

So send some good vibes my way tonight...I wasn't expecting to start doing solo gigs for at least a few more months...and I'm kinda glad I don't have a lot of time to overanalyze it to be honest. LOL But good vibes will help!

I'll let everyone know tomorrow how it went! So exciting!

Hello all, just to let eveyone know I am the most non-belly dancing Army wife on the planet. I took lessons two duty stations ago and loved it! However, I had a taskmaster from well, she was tough!! She was very, very very serious. Did I mention she was serious? Since arriving on Oahu, I have been think about taking lessons again. We'll see how far I get!! Much Aloha to all.
