All, Looking for insight/ advice on "drills" for "tick tocks." In case you learned them as something else, think vertical hip movements w/ a pow....definite visual isolation on lower half of body. The movement is included in a tribal choreography. Let me know if you need more. Thanks much! Kim

Re: Tick Tock insight/ advice
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 9:09 AMI just took Asharah's workshop on pops, locks and tick-tocks. First of all, I'd recommend taking that workshop!
Secondly, her "tick-tocks" are less of a "pow" and more of a progressive series of through the movement – like the secondhand of a clock.
To drill those, basically break the maya into three parts – drop 1/3, drop the next 1/3, hit the bottom, switch sides. After a while, break it into four parts, drop 1/4, drop the next 1/4, drop the next 1/4, hit the bottom, switch sides.
For these, you're using your obliques and your glutes… tighten the oblique and the glute to get started, release them both a little of the way.
So when you're sitting on the floor practicing your glute squeezes, throw in a series of squeezing and then releasing in 1/3's. Then also throw in a series of squeezing by 1/3's and the releasing completely.
If this isn't the movement you're talking about… um… then I don't know what you're talking about. :) -

Tue, July 7, 2009 - 8:38 AMHow funny, the maya breakdown you mentioned is what I do when I practice, and I thought I just made it up! LOL I had no idea Asharah did it. She is great, btw! I bought her dvd a few months ago, and it's the best one I own so far. I love that she really breaks everything down, and does a lot of exercises so you really get practice. She explains it very well. I'm surprised I don't hear more about her. I hadn't even heard of her until I saw an ad for her dvd.

Tue, July 7, 2009 - 8:35 AMAre you talking about "hip pops"? That was what I learned to call them through Sandra (assuming it's the same move)!
