I'm new to Tribal style, and am having a devil of time getting a handle on the bicycle shimmy. My right hip cooperates in a rough sort of way, but my left is hopeless. Forget layering a regular shimmy on top for now...I need tips on breaking it down and getting my left hip to behave. It does seem easier done on releve rather than flat footed.

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 8:21 PMI have no idea what a Bicycle Shimmy is. Please describe it because I always look forward to learning a new shimmy. -

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 9:33 PMWell, the right hip does a half circle up, forward and down and then the left hip does the same thing. Its a back to front crescent really, and seems to be easier if done in releve. The trick though is moving backwards with itty bitty steps while doing the shimmy. The basic move isn;t too bad, but when I want to layer a smaller shimmy on top of the crescent shimmy it all falls apart. I got to drill it during class yesterday, and still have trouble getting my left hip to do the arc properly, never mind layering on top of it. -

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Thu, August 30, 2007 - 7:58 PMI have never heard of a bicycle shimmy being used in Tribal! The move feels very Egyptian. -

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Fri, August 31, 2007 - 6:47 AMI had never even heard of it at all until my Tribal teacher taught it to me as a part of a move called Snatch Attack. Its actually really beautiful when she does it...I just need to get a handle on it so it'll look halfway decent on my body. I know what needs to happen intellectually, but my left hip is being a bit curmudgeonly on me.

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Sat, September 1, 2007 - 6:27 PMThanks for the explanation. I stood up and followed your directions, and I think I get it. If there were bicycle pedals under my feet, I'd be peddling while standing up, so to speak. But you say there is a shimmy layered on top if it? What kind of shimmy is layered on top? -

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Sun, September 2, 2007 - 5:23 AMIts a bit hard to describe, but its almost like a 3/4 shimmy layered on top of the bicycle shimmy. It looks amazing when done well, but at the moment its rather short of that adjective on me. I'm still working at it though--I'm ridiculously right hipped, so getting the move layered, isolated, and even on both sides is a good challenge for me.

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 2:50 AMMaybe this is the same as 3/4 shimmy on the down? If so, I've heard that practicing while walking up/down stairs is helpful for some people. -

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 11:49 AMI can do the 3/4 shimmy on the down...that is all on one plane, the horizontal. This combination shimmy is encompassing more than one plane. It starts horizontal and then arcs up, forward and in on each side, with a regular 3/4 shimmy layered on top. I guess just need to keep drilling it on my left side to try and get it into muscle memory. -

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 3:11 PMSounds like what I recently learned as as 3/4 shimmy on the down with a twist and stop, Hagalla-style (my original teacher just taught is as 3/4 on the down).

Re: Bicycle Shimmy--I need help!
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 5:50 AMI too have struggled and continue to struggle with this move. Our teacher has broken it down in this way: start with the simple hip rotation from back to front down, first right then left hip. Get the feel of this movement first, I find it easiest if arms are in second position (straight out), I also find it easiest flat footed and grounded. Practice walking in this manner for awhile. Then layer the shimmy, right-left-right--I find it easier if I say to myself down-down-down; in other words the right hip goes down while left is up, then left goes down while right is up and then right goes down while left is up.
I am still struggling, but vow to get good at it! I hope this helps.

Tue, February 19, 2008 - 1:20 PMI also learned this move as a 3/4 on the down.
