For those who participated as dancers, vendors, workshop participants or audience members at the evening show...we are soliciting feedback regarding the event. We've made a jump to a new venue and are looking to fine tune some things...please share with us...what did you like...what didn't you like?

We know about the following already:
*concerns about double-booked events
*better directions to the theatre

Other issues?

Thanks a bunch!

I was dancing at Il Pirata Sat night. My students went though, I will get their feedback tonight.

Personally, the facility sounds amazing, but I do try to avoid going to Watsonville alone, and I never go at night regardless. I don't really like going to Richmond for Rakkasah either, but I go there during the day and it's by a police station.

That may be hard to hear but that's my honest feeling.

I wonder if you might get greater "out of town" turn out with a dance contest. And if the audience got to vote for the best dancer, maybe you would get more of the public involved. Just ideas.

That's interesting to hear that about Watsonville. Maybe because I'm from Oakland, Watsonville sorta seems like Disneyland - the happiest place on earth! No I'm surprised to hear people say that. I'm finding more and more as the years go by that downtown Santa Cruz is shaddier than Watsonville...

I appreciate that you sharing that feeling...and I might be overly sensitive to that perception because Watsonville is predominately a Mexican/Mexican-American community -- but, seriously, I felt much safer at the Mello Center when we left at 11:30 p.m. than I do in Downtown Santa Cruz! I mean, all but two years we've been at venues in Downtown Santa Cruz and there were junkies right outside the doors!

Not sure how to clear up that misperception other than to ask people to share whether they had an negative eperiences at the actual location....

        Alas,

I live in Watsonville and have for the past 6 years (3 of them alone) and I must admit that I do in fact feel safer at home in Watsonville then with the posse in Santa Cruz after a show. When we left the Mello at close to midnight Saturday, there wasn't ANYONE on the street. It was quiet and decently lit. I even parked at the end of the block but was not afraid to walk to my car. After events in the Santa Cruz area, I feel like I'm always racing back to my car--heck, even after weekly dance classes I feel like that. In addition, there isn't any venue in the Santa Cruz area like the Mello. It is a very lovely theatre and to produce some of the theatrical productions that all of us at BOP envision, we need a THEATRE, not a community center, not a hall, a theatre with awesome lights and sound, dressing rooms, comfortable seats, lobby for vending, etc. I think people in the Santa Cruz area need to realize that there are things worth making the drive for in South County--I know this issue isn't just a bellydance event thing, it happens to a lot of shows and events south of Aptos and I kind of think it's just sad--people will drive to San Jose or SF but they won't drive 15 miles south on highway 1 to support people in their local community. The Aziza Show is scheduled at the Mello in April and I truly hope that the community (both bellydance and general public) will get over their fears and misconceptions so that they don't miss ANOTHER FABULOUS EVENT! Thanks to absolutely everyone for their feedback, we really appreciate it!

I really loved the poetic theme of this event. Each dance item had a deeper meaning for me when I had a poem to connect it to and the poems chosen were so beautiful. Meanings and emotions conveyed through dance has always been really important to me because of my experience with Indian dance and the emphasis that is usually placed on stories and suggestive expression. I don't have as much experience with bellydance but I haven't seen or noticed this aspect of dance within bellydance presentation as much as in other styles of dance.

I felt that this event was a successful example of using emotion and themes in bellydance choreography -- which probably has a lot to do with informing the audience about the intention of each dance piece. I appreciated that the poetry was presented before the show during the screening and also in the handout. The only thing I really craved, though, was either a narrator reading the poem before each dance piece or presenting the poem in the backdrop (like you did before the show) before the dancer comes out. I kept trying to read the poem connected to each dance before each performance began even though it was so dark!

(oh yea! - I also really admired how you presented such a variety of artists using influences of so many styles - cabaret, tribal style, hip hop, modern, and im sure a bunch of other styles Im not even aware of - it kept everything fresh and invigorating!)

Thanks for putting on such a nice event,
    Jessica
