This is my all time favorite quote:
The snake is an animal. It has a backbone, heart, red blood, drinks water, eats food, breathes air, feels fear, just like every other animal in the world. And it's in a body that is the hardest thing for the average person to understand.
Dave Barker

Just a reminder...
A snake is a living breathing dance partner, please treat them with care and respect. They are wild animals and they can and will bite. Just be sure it is not an audiance member that gets bit. Also please be sure you have the venues permission and alert your audiance that a live snake will be appearing, that way those with fear of snakes may leave for your performance, or they just may not be allowed in because of health codes.

Please keep these things in consideration when performing with snakes they are not just props. I call them partners.
There is also a great tribe for more questions about dancing with snakes.

It always makes me so sad to see a snake treated as a prop. There are a few local girls who think nothing of bringing their snakes into unfamiliar (and often unwelcoming) environments and then dancing with them or letting some stranger dance with them. These poor things are often taken out into the cold without adequate heating or shelter for them.

I've tried voicing my opinion, but it falls on deaf ears because I don't have snakes.

      Belilah, Thanks for caring.
There are many considerations to Performing with snake sas I said, keeping them warm and/or cool in the heat too. Not letting them get too much sun or sunburned if they have light skin. I never let anyone hold my snakes at a performance either. Too many liabilities.
If you want to dance with a snake you should first learn to care for one. Right down to cleaning thier poop, and feeding them.

Well said everyone. People forget that just because they "own" an animal doesn't make it alright to do whatever they want with it. Dexter has opinions and he doesn't hesitate to let me know what they are. For example, his second hid box. I kept turning it so the opening was facing the center of the tank and every time I turned around, he had it facing the end of the tank. At first I thought it was accidental, until, after I cleaned his tank, I watched him turn it around with his body. What can I say? He's a natural interior decorator.

But when it comes to dancing (although we've yet to dance in public - local opportunities are hard to find and I don't want to take him on a long trip until I see how he feels about it), but we dance together at home. And there are days when he is in the mood and there are times when he is NOT in the mood. He's never bitten (or even TRIED to bite), but I always try to respect his moods.
