I just sold a Big Ass Tribally necklace and I have no clue on how to pack it so it doesn't get damaged during shipping (and I don't want to end up here either!)

Re: Advice needed: Shipping jewelry (Slightly OT)
Thu, July 30, 2009 - 10:04 AMWell, without seeing a pic of what you're talking about... You need to consider both packing material & shipping package. Meaning, it should be packed/wrapped/surrounded by something to keep it safe while traveling. This could mean tissue paper, and it could mean peanuts, depending on what you are sending. Then you need to choose the appropriate package - envelope or box? Depends on the size - and keep in mind that while boxes cost more, they are less likely to incur damage if properly packed.
You might post your question here tribes.tribe.net/etsydancers or here tribes.tribe.net/etsyconnectioncentral . There are many jewelry makers over there that ship items like that ll the time, they might be able to more specifically answer your question. -

Re: Advice needed: Shipping jewelry (Slightly OT)
Thu, July 30, 2009 - 10:40 PMI have luck with big cardboard tubes and bubblewrap. Also, don't be afraid to chop a cardboard box apart to make your own ghetto-box should the flat rate one at the post office prove cost-prohibitive. There is much <3 for the ghetto-box.

Re: Advice needed: Shipping jewelry (Slightly OT)
Mon, August 3, 2009 - 4:56 AMSome post offices will help you pack your stuff but others are so busy they just can't. Fed-Ex and UPS shipping costs are higher but may be worth it for the automatic insurance, and the staff at a Kinkos-Fed-Ex or UPS store will help you pack your item right.
I'd wrap jewelry in piece of fabric or put it in a fabric pouch. Then wrap it with bubble wrap at least once, and as many times as needed to fill up the entire box you're using. There should be at least 1 to 3 inches of padding or wrapping around the item.
Don't count on scotch tape or cellophane tape to hold the package shut. Get regular packing tape, clear or brown, and use that. In a pinch, duct tape will work too.
Certified mail (thru the post office) is not cheap but is practically a guarantee the package will not go astray. However, certification may make UPS or Fed Ex a better option.
