They've had some really neat stuff but I went to purchase something today and their store is almost cleaned out. Anyone know where they might have gone?

  • I've purchased several items from Alter Egos, (the ones out of roseburg oregon) and so far, everything has fallen apart very quickly. Maybe it was just bad luck, and I never attempted to return anything, because its just not worth the hassle, but if you can see the merch in person before you buy it, its a good idea. Another issue I have with them, is that a friend of mine and I, met them at a local festival, at which the girls were very sweet and the owner was a kind helpful person who encouraged my friend (also from roseburg) to attend classes...My friend is mildly overweight, but certainly not obese. She went to sign up for classes and was very rudely told that she was far too fat and would beed to lose 20 pounds before they would even consider letting her take a beginner class. EXCUSE ME???but when does weight have anything to do with learning to belly dance? Have you seen the beautiful Halima? Have you seen the beautiful Sahara? Exquisite dancers, and both what many would consider obese...anyway, I know I hijacked the thread, but I cant personally support dancers who are weight snobs.
    • I was just making the observation on a couple of her item prices. I don't know her personally at all and she takes the awesomest pics for her merchandise. But a stretch velvet 3/4 sleeve choli or the stretch lace choli should only set you back about $30. The triangular tassel belt should set you back about $70. It is co-incidental that she was brought up as I was just on her page a few days before this popped up. I am sure she is a nice person. And there seems to be a lot of people out there who don't mind paying her prices, so kudos to her.
      • Yes, Alter Ego's is a great place. I agree that the prices are a bit steep sometimes, but I can vouch that they have quality items. They are having a very difficult time with the suppliers and thier prices going up because of the falling dollar. They are great people, and I have never ever heard even one time anyone from that studio make a comment like that! I was 215 pounds when I started, mainly because I have an illness that prevented me from doing anything, and have lost 40 lbs in the first year, and never, not one time did anyone ever use the words fat, obese, overweight, etc......So I am not sure what that's about. I would also suggest that you make sure and bring up if things are falling apart quickly, or it could have been their supplier, since they did change recently, but that informaton helps them help their business. :)
        Hope that helps!

Well, after some thought, I greatly admire Alter Egos for keeping their prices at a strong level. As a business/store owner and a vendor/supplier, the entire market is being crashed by people who come in and undercut the entire market, causing values to fall. I don't know what they are thinking. Profit margin is shrinking and value is shrinking. It makes it hard to make an honest living. BLESS YOU ALTER EGOS FOR KEEPING THE MARKET STRONG!!! Maybe it is good for you dancers who want to buy cheaper costuming, but this stuff is not cheap to buy. As well as the above posters comments, the American dollar is growing weaker and our wholesale prices are going up. I hear some dancers upset on other threads that they used to have paying gigs in restaurants or other venues and then newbies or inexperienced girls come in and offer to dance for free and totally destroy the local market for paid experienced dancers. Some do it for free because they say they do it for the joy. But then the dancers who try to make a living out of it are SOL. So maybe some of you who have experienced this undercutting in the dancer's world will understand our situation in the vendors world. A 25 yard skirt on a healthy market should fetch about $90 if you were able to use the basic mark up formula. A tie dye 25 yard skirt should cost you about $98. But some are coming onto the market and flooding it and undercutting it. I don't know what is going to happen. It is tough to make a descent living and these are high quality skirts. I don't feel I should cave in. So, just came back to say...YOU GO GIRL!...ALTER EGOS ROCKS!! KEEP IT REAL!!

I agree that people are coming in and slashing prices, dont know how they are making any money at all!!!

I do CUSTOM work for the same price as most of the mass produced items out there.
I dont custom dye any longer, I cant keep up and I would be making about $.50 an hour for these.

Its the ebay generation. People want things for next to nothing, and dont care if the quality is crap. I for one would rather purchase something for more, and keep it for a long time... =) (though I have found that sewing for myself is easier and cheeper any more).

So yes... KEEP THE MARKET STRONG!

Just wanted to comment on those triangular hip scarves, if you are looking at the ones with the mirrors and tassels, the ones that are in the $90 range..........OOOH they are SOO pretty! Having seen them up close and in person, and I would pay that price. *Lots* of details and they are just gorgeous.

A friend thought I might be interested in this thread and I am. To all of you who have purchased from us thank you! My daughter and I work very hard to find really unusual and fun items for the Belly Dancer in all of us. We are struggling to get our website up and running so that we and you don't have to pay the Ebay premium. But for now that is our only online presence. We do go to as many of the major BD festivals as possible and that is why Liz found an empty store. We literally pack up the whole store and set it up at the festivals. We just returned from a week at Tribal Fest! Lots of fun.
As to the girl who bought from us and it fell apart I have communicated directly with her to see what I can do to make amends. We do stand by our merchandise and have ,over the past 6 years we have been vending belly dance items, gotten very few complaints. The bottom line though is if I don't know something is wrong I can't fix it.

With regard to the friend that was destroyed by my insulting her about her weight. While acknowledging her pain, I would like to say that I just can't see myself saying anything of the kind. I don't feel that way to begin with and always go out of my way to encourage everyone, regardless of where they are in there journey, to dance. The sisterhood alone is too important to miss. But having said that sometimes even the greatest of intentions can go awry. So to her I say publicly; I am very sorry to have hurt your feelings and if you would allow me the opportunity I would say this to you in person. Please reconsider dancing. If not with us, buy a video and invite friends to dance with you in your living room. Just please dance. And again whether I meant it or not please forgive whatever I said that hurt you so badly.
    Sincerely,
    Surya
