Wash Ya Wash is the second release from the Sharifs. Done in classical Egyptian style, the rich orchestration and lush sound are pure Middle Eastern.
Hazar Fazar is a lively bouncey piece with fun false stops and pauses. Tamr Henna offers rich vocals over moderate tempo music. Ya Msafer Whadek drips with Spanish flair, with stops and wild rhythm and tempo changes it offers a tango flavor. Baiyaa Elhawa features call and response between a mournful clarinet and violin. Raks Bedaya is a Mohhamed Abdul Whahab favorite, I believe the English translation of the original folk song it draws from is called Winds of Spring. Lamone el Nass starts out slow with lush violin. Although sword and veil are not traditionally Egyptian, and floor work has been banned in Egypt since 1947, the first part of this song would work well for any of these. Banat Bahari is another upbeat song, some of the bouncy parts sound almost like a jig. The finale is fully orchestrated, and would make a nice ending to a troupe performance.
The liner notes include information about Yousry Sharif, Raqia Hassan, and Mr. Ahmed Abd Elfatah. The English lyrics to Lamone El Nass (Blaming Me) and Tamr Henna (Henna Flower) are included.
I enjoy this cd for listening and class, and might use a cut or two in performance.
You might like this cd if you

• Like full, orchestrated versions
You probably don’t want this cd if you
