Much of the music on Tales of the Night Winds is used on the soundtracks for Delilah Flynns videos, composed and recorded by her husband and collaborator Steve Flynn. Delilah was one of the first American dancers to actively explore Goddess Dance, conduct retreats with Goddess and Nature themes, and to release a comprehensive three volume instructional bellydance video.
The keys and instrumentation make this cd easy on Western ears. The melodies are fresh and distinct over soft harmonies. The rhythms are steady, clear and easy to follow. The whole cd has a kind of early New Age feeling.
Yah Deliliah is light and cheerful. Caravanserai feels almost like a jazzy jig with a British Isles influence. The Dream Weavers has (naturally) a hazy, dreamy quality. That same mysterious quality carries on into Orient Express, with a moderate karsilama. The synthesizer/organ on Ruth lacks the haziness of the previous numbers, yet feels soft and smooth, reminiscent of Desert Wind or Ramal Lamar. Lilith is a unique chifti-telli in that it starts off with pure percussion. When the single flute begins to play the song takes on a Native American feeling in spite of the steady Middle Eastern rhythm. The final cut, Angelita, is a wonderful uplifting bolero, a rhythm that isn’t heard much anymore. This cut makes a nice finale to the cd and would be a nice finale for a show.
I will be using this music in beginners classes, I think newbie students will like this.
You might like this cd if
• you like New Age music, Dolphia, Desert Wind or Ramal Lamar
• you’re looking for simple arrangements with clear melodies and distinct rhythms
• You’re looking for Western influences, or “easy” music for Western ears
You probably don’t want this cd if
• You’re looking for authentic Middle Eastern instrumentation, keys and melodies
• You’re looking for something raw and gritty, or heavily orchestrated
