I am a reviewer on amazon.com and I notice whenever I give instructionals a bad rating, someone rates my rating unhelpful. I don't understand why no one wants an honest opinion on dvd's they are spending their hard earned money for. It only happens when I rate something low if I give something i high ratinge everyone lves the review.

Tue, May 5, 2009 - 2:51 PMProbably the star's mother or best friend, angry that you don't like her baby's dvd, lol!

Wed, May 6, 2009 - 7:24 AMDon't take it personally. It's probably either the dancer herself or one of her close friends or family members.

Re: Reviewing
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 2:34 PMDo you give a list of the cons? Or I detailed explanation of why you did not like the DVD? Personally, if a poor or even good review doesn't give me some objective details about why they did or did not like a DVD or whatever product I'll rate a review as "not helpful." -

Re: Reviewing
Fri, May 8, 2009 - 1:34 AMI dunno why people would rate your reviews not helpful then..... no offense to anyone..... but some people are just dumb and/or contrary. Well from a person who depends on and appreciates detailed and objective reviews. THANKS!
I'm really fickle about how I spend my money too...

Re: Reviewing
Mon, May 11, 2009 - 4:36 PMI really appreciate when people give negative reviews. It's certainly not helpful when every single dvd on the marked is rated 5 stars and described as "the best instructional bellydance DVD on the market." I'm an avid collector of DVDs and have ended up with quite a few lemons trusting the super-positive Amazon reviews. -

Mon, May 11, 2009 - 5:45 PMJoy I agree thats why I was confused I always look at the bad reviews first and if they are saying things like the instructor didn't go ver posture or somethinng about the explanations not being clear and etc I would pass that one up. I love good reviews too. -

Re: Reviewing
Wed, May 13, 2009 - 10:40 AMI also always look at the bad reviews first. If well written, it will stick with me more (or should I say not necessarily bad, but critical, not all positive?), way more, than a positive review. even a detailed positive one. Positive reviews I tend to trust only if I know the reviewer from other products, and know s/he does not praise everything. So then I listen to the critical reviewer rather than to the particularly positive review, if that makes sense to you?
I tend to rate a majority of "bad"/critical reviews helpful. They ARE more helpful than the all-honey-and-sunshine ones. I end up buying the product nevertheless (unless the points criticized are deal-breakers for me), I just feel better making an informed decision. It makes me feel my money is not a risk.
I have never rated a somewhat negative review unhelpful unless the reproach was not product related ("amazon sent me a damaged copy and wont replace it I hate them"), or just unfair ("this woman cannot keep my interest.. I do not like her looks bla bla").
I am guessing most review readers look for balanced and slightly over-critical reviews, like most people here have indicated.
If you reviewed a very famous dancer's product (Rachel Brice?) it might not be family and friends, but over devoted fans who feel hurt. Dont give them a single thought, they ll grow and learn :)
