I bought this cd the minute I saw it for two reasons. One, the stunning 1920s style costume on the cover. I am in love with the pink hipscarf/belt with black beads.
Two, Rakset El Fadaa. Back in the 70s when I started dancing, one of my first vinyl dance lps was Omar Korschid and His Magic Guitar, but Omar and his Wah-Wah Peddle is more accurate. One of my favorite songs off that lp was Rakset El Fadaa. Sadly, Rakset El Fadaa didn’t withstand the test of time for me. Or perhaps it’s just not the same without Omar, his Magic Guitar, and his Wah-Wah pedal.
Aside from that slight disappointment, this cd is a solid collection of Egyptian music recorded in the 1980s. Some are timeless classics, particularly the cuts from Farid El Attrache.
The music is rich with tempo and rhythm changes. Some cuts are more heavily orchestrated than others, all feature traditional Middle Eastern instruments. The music is beautifully played and recorded clearly. Western audiences will be able to appreciate this music.
The liner notes are limited to the song names, artist, length and year. The inside cover has a larger, close up shot of that gorgeous scarf/belt.
You might like this cd if you
• Like classic Middle Eastern music
• Want music in the classic Egyptian style
• Are looking for shorter songs ideal for solos
• Are looking for longer songs that can work as mini-routines
• Are looking for 1980s style music
You probably don’t want this cd if you
• Are looking for techno or pop or industrial
• Are looking for “rough” or “edgy” music
• Are looking for modern music, or music from outside the Middle East
