This is authentic folk music recorded live. There’s nothing fancy here, the music is very repetitive and has a tribal drum circle feel. The first four tracks include only vocals and drums, giving the music a tribal, almost primitive, sound.
Nugumi is a song celebrating the removal of an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh from his original resting place, flooded by the Aswan Dam, to a new, higher and safer location. Allah is a religious song and should not be used for a public dance performance. The Bride and The Groom are wedding songs, each celebrating the virtues of the wedding couple. Musical instruments, specifically mizmar, finally appear on Ya Rab Toba. This is a traditional party song that repeats over and over. Manami, a contemporary styled song using traditional instruments, features strings and frame drums.
This is not one of my favorite cds. I can see using for class to introduce students to these sounds, and to point out the dangers of using a religious song for dance performance. I also think the Bride and Groom songs could make a wonderful tableau depicting a wedding, cumulating with Ya Rab Toba.
Note there’s two versions of the cover for this cd. The music is the same on both. One is labeled Music of Upper Egypt, with the Eye of Horus on the cover. The other is labeled The Music of Upper Egypt, with a yellow band over the Eye of Horus. The liner notes are more detailed on the second cover.
You might like this cd if you

• Want something with a tribal sound

You probably don’t want this cd if you
