I'm looking for good ones to learn from; I have Kajiras dvd's, Asharahs and Ariellah's. I find them all good; I've had RB's dvds, but didn't find them ..enough for me. I also had all of FCBD dvd's at one point; but ATS is not really for me.

I'm looking more for gothic and fusion styles. Thanks

Bellydance for Beautiful freaks is goth-themed, but I ve read by various reviewers for serious bellydance instruction with some goth and/or tribal fusion feel they by far prefer Ariellah.
If i may say so, Ariellah seems the better dancer by far skill-wise.

You might like the Fantasy Bellydance series for fusion. With some "darker" themes as Kali (Arielleh); Shadow (Sera); Priestess/ritual (Darshan).
I think these are the great fusion instructors..

But for learning the movements I d definitely not shy away from Luscious Bellydance Workout for the flow, Jenna for comprehensiveness, Blanca for sensuality, and Autumn Ward s theatrical approach could be greatly beneficial for darker interpretations even though she is pretty angelic in many of her theatrical performances.

I do not know whether you still need to learn basic to intermediate technique?

Depends what you are looking for. Are you looing for a particular style, new things that have come out this year, dvds that will continue to be valuable for a long while?

Some ramdom recommendations of stuff that I've liked - Nadira Jamal's Improvisation Tool Kit and Taktaba podcasts. She has an analytical mind and is able to explain abstract concepts in a way that makes sense. Michelle Joyce's Killer Ziller is very well-thought-out for the beginning zill student. Her drill dvds are also a good value. Ansuya's Lavish Layers and zill dvds are also ones that
keep popping up on the practice menu.

I'm also working with Sadie's Thrilling Drilling. Her dance style is too busy for me personally but it's great practice to be able to do 5 things at once, lol!

For beginner stuff Jenna's Bellydance Basics and Beyond is excellent. For intermediate level, I like Keti Sharif's A-Z combos.

Sorry, didn't read your second post. While Michelle's dvds are more slanted towards cabaret styling, the materials that they are presenting would still be valuable for goth/fusion. nadira's dvd is more concept oriented and could be used with any style of bellydance.

    My 6 top favourites:

    For getting basic moves:
For absolute beginners: Amira 101 bellydance (Amira from Las Vegas, amirasbelly.com, as there are more Amiras)
For beginners to intermediate: Jenna s basics and beyond IS THE BEST AND SOOO COMPREHENSIVE.

For great inspiration and real "dancing" once one has mastered the basic moves:
    Luscious Bellydance workout
Shamira s Sensuous Workout 2 (technique) - with 3 choreographies. These two get you dancing.

    Drum solo:
    Neons Rhythms Workout.

For intermediates and great inspiration from the most fluid dancer I know:
    Blanca s Sensual Bellydance.

For tribal style, Sera, Ariellah, Darshan, Asharah seem to be great in this order from beginner to intermediate. (I am not tribal so far).

I am now looking forward very much to Ranyas Egyptian baladi instructional, and Autumn Wards artistic/classical dance approach to bellydance.

    For inspiration:
At best the egyptian legends from youtube channels (type Soheir Zaki, Nagua Foad/Nagwa Fouad, Mona Said, Fifi Abdo and you ll find the related channels), or the dvd Legends of Bellydance 1947.

      I forgot:
For drilling Michelle Joyce Drills Drills Drills gets raving reviews.
for intermediate to advanced drum solos:
Michelle Pop Lock and Shimmy, Sadie s drum solo choreography videos or her Thrillin Drillin.

For zils: Killer Ziller by Michelles Joyce or Elsa Leandros Bellydance with zils (the former is a more traditional approach with one leading hand, the latter alters hands)

As I am not zilling, drilling, nor intermediate I have not tried these videos but have read so many great reviews about them so I will definitely get them at a later stage.

Sadie's "Thrillin Drillin" and "Sensual, Slow and Sultry" are wonderful! Sadie and Kaya's new dvd is good too.

Everything by cheeckygirls is fab!!!! I've love Kassar, Sharon Kihara, and Rachel Brice's dvds even though I'm not tribal.

Also, Tamalyn Dallal's new DVD is one of the best bellydance dvd's I know of! She is a seasoned teacher/dancer and is very generous with her knowledge. (She is also a beautiful person!) I have to say that I always prefer to take workshops/classes (as well as dvd's) with teachers who have been dancing/teaching for a while. I wish that instructors like Alexandra King, Eva Cernick, and Tamalyn would be asked to lead some of the ensuing amounts of new bellydance dvd's coming out.

I was considering asking the same thing until I found this thread a bit farther back. I don't think the question is "depends on what you want", but "What do I use and come back to over and over again?" and yes, it will be a personal thing, but it often says a lot about the videos themselves. I'd like to hear more of others' favorite DVDs.

I'm only an intermediate dancer, but I love Jenna's Bellydance Basics and Beyond, and often use a segment at the beginning of a practice to focus and drill on one particular area. I use the warmup on that one a lot, too, because I feel a lot more warmed up from that than from warmups on my other DVDs. I also like Luscious a lot to just follow along and dance. For fun, I like Bellydance - Hiphop, and my advanced-level best friend seemed to enjoy that one as well. When I want to just sit and watch, I spend a lot of time on Youtube watching dancers, and Tempest's Bellydance for the Beautful Freaks is fun, too. I love her music and costuming choices (I do have a strong gothic tendency).

I just ordered Combination Nation based on the reviews here and on Amazon, because the one thing I really wanted to work on was improvisation and just dancing to music, and maybe start creating some basic choreography, but I haven't used that one yet.

I rent a lot of bellydance DVDs on Netflix, so I can try out different ones for variety.

I agree with the warmup for Jenna's Basics and Beyond - pretty much the only video that has a movement/dance-based warmup instead of stretching and strength conditioning. I like this warm up a lot.

      My favourites are -

      For drilling:
      - Ariellah's Yoga and Conditioning
      - Michelle Joyce's Drills Drills Drills
      - Asharah's
      - Sadie's Thrillin' Drillin' (good for all levels, works up to advanced drills)

      Warm Up, some drilling/layering concepts
      - Jenna's Beyond Basics

      Conditioning, Other
      - Aziza's Ultimate Practice Companion
      - Suhaila's glutes, yoga, pilates
      - Rachel Brice's Arms
      - Tribal Fusion Fundamentals - Moria's section

      Zilling
      - Ansuya's (it actually gets you zilling and dancing at the same time, not just walking on the beat and practicing different patterns)

      ATS
      - Volumes 1, 4, 7 of the FCBD DVDs, of course!

I have a few others that I swap in and out every once in awhile, but the ones listed above are the ones I consider the best.
