I posted this in reply to another Triber about the role of song in bellydance.....enjoy. :-)
Song = made up of one or more musical instruments combined using each specific noises partaining to those instruments in varying scales and counts.
Singer = another musical instrument. It is the only musical instrument that can put an interpretation into words that our brains understand and it is also the only instrument that can tell us exactly how it is feeling and therefore directly affect how we are feeling.
Song, Singer & Dancer = A melodic symphony that is not only heard through the ears but also visually heard as the combination of the music, singers emotions interpreted through voice and the dancer interprets both music and voice through her body. She can either take the music, take the singer, or if extremely skilled she can flow between one instrument to another, the voice alone, the voice and the instrument that the voice is recognising (if you listen closely you will hear that the singers voice will match an instruments 'tuning' eg; in Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" Bob is voice is matched to his guitar's tuning), the rhythm alone or combination of rhythm and instruments and voice.
How she dances depends on many things.
A perfect example is Om Kalthoum's Enta Omri in both cases. The way that music is played plays a big part in how a dancer will perform to it, but as soon as you add lyrics it takes on a whole new clarified meaning for both audience AND the dancer.
The dancer takes music and voice and creates a visual emotion that has the power to make an audience stand and applaude throughout the performance or she can make them sit and silently weep whilst remembering a loved one from long ago. The singer alone also has the same power through voice and the emotions she projects through her voice.
